Earlier this week, the mother of Marshawn Lynch teed off on Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell for the fateful fourth-down play call against the Rams in overtime. Bevell and his boss, Pete Carroll, took the high road, refraining from any criticism of Delisa Lynch.
Which seemed to induce a kind of/sort of apology from Marshawn’s mother on Thursday.
“I’m a fan of football first and foremost, when I watch the game I view it through the eyes of a fan and then a Mother,” Delisha Lynch said. “I’ve been going to my kids games and practices for years and not only do I love the game, but I love analyzing it also. I don’t discuss football when talking with my son, I discuss life and other things. I realize that as a mother of a player my views will be received differently than the average fan, and I acknowledge that Facebook may have not been the best platform to display my views, but I love the Seahawks just like all the other 12’s, so when I see a 4th & 1 ran out of a shotgun formation against a good Rams defensive line, as a FAN it makes me wonder what the coordinators logic was.”
That’s a fair explanation, but it doesn’t change the over-the-top criticism that she previously directed to Bevell, calling him the “worst play-caller ever” and calling for him to be fired for that “dumb azz play.”
It’s not the first time a family member of a player, coach, or G.M. will take to social media with something outrageous to say. (It’s not the first time this month.) And it’s definitely not the last. Nowadays, it’s just another potential distraction that teams can’t allow themselves to be distracted by.
With safety Kam Chancellor still holding out and a makeshift offensive line and plenty of other concerns for a team staring the face of 0-2, the opinions of Delisa Lynch are the least of their problems.
