Report: “Reasonable possibility” Brees plays this week

Drew Brees

Saints quarterback Drew Brees’s right shoulder injury has been the subject of much discussion since he admitted having some problems with it during last Sunday’s loss to the Buccaneers.

On Monday, PFT reported that a decision about Brees’s ability to play in Week Three against Carolina would be made later in the week. Brees had an MRI on his shoulder that showed a bruised rotator cuff and Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported that the results would also be examined by Dr. James Andrews.

Mortensen’s colleague Ed Werder reports Tuesday that Andrews has taken a look and told Brees to “rehab hard” in the coming days. That’s left Brees and the Saints feeling like there is a “reasonable possibility” that he will be well enough to take the field as the Saints try to avoid an 0-3 start to the season.

“Reasonable possibility” isn’t the most optimistic language to use about a player’s chances of being in the lineup, but it’s considerably better than Monday’s report that he’d miss several weeks. Saints coach Sean Payton called that report “inaccurate,” although it won’t be until we see this week’s practice reports that we’ll have a clear idea about just how inaccurate it might have been.
