The Patriots signed linebacker Jonathan Freeny to a one-year deal as a free agent this offseason and it seems they’re pretty happy with what they’ve seen from him thus far.

Field Yates of ESPN.com reports that the team has extended Freeny’s contract through the 2016 season. Per the report, Freeny will have a base salary of $1 million along with a signing bonus of $500,000 and $250,000 more available through roster bonuses.

Freeny hasn’t played much on defense in his two regular season games with the Pats, but he’s been a core member of their special teams. That was also the most significant part of his job in Miami and will likely remain the main area he makes contributions to the Patriots.

Freeny had 42 tackles in 44 games with the Dolphins between 2012 and 2014. He’s recorded two tackles for the Patriots so far this season.
