Drew Brees plans to throw today to see if he’s ready to come back

Sean Payton’s “optimistic” he’ll get his quarterback back this week, but the Saints should have a better idea later today.

According to Ed Werder of ESPN, Saints quarterback Drew Brees plans to throw today to determine the status of his bruised rotator cuff.

The throwing will be his first since Friday, after which he decided the Saints would be better off playing Luke McCown against the Panthers. Brees went to Birmingham Monday to meet with Dr. James Andrews, and reportedly got better news than he was expecting. He also did a rehab session while there, and is clearly encouraged about the results.

The Saints can certainly use him, as they’re off to an 0-3 start heading into Sunday night’s game with the Brandon Weeden-led Cowboys.
