Jason Garrett: Offense coming to Matt Cassel quickly

Matt Cassel

The Cowboys traded for quarterback Matt Cassel a week ago to give themselves another option at the position while Tony Romo recovers from a broken collarbone and coach Jason Garrett suggests that it might not be long before Cassel will know the offense well enough to step into the lineup.

Garrett says that Cassel is familiar with the concepts that make up the Cowboys offense and that he’s “getting more and more comfortable” with the specific terminology and nuances that the team uses in their system.

“He’s working hard at it,” Garrett said, via the Dallas Morning News. “He’s a smart guy. He’s an experienced guy. It comes to him quickly.”

Brandon Weeden started last week and went 22-of-26 for 232 yards and an interception in a check-down heavy performance against the Falcons. Garrett complimented Weeden’s work after the game and he’s set to start again against New Orleans in Week Four, but the Cowboys will need a more varied approach in the long term to remain successful on offense. If Weeden can’t provide it, Cassel may be ready to give it a shot in the near future.
