Report: Dan Campbell leading interim candidate if Joe Philbin fired

Getty Images

One of the arguments cited against firing Dolphins coach Joe Philbin was that there wasn’t an apparent heir on staff at the moment.

But that may not be the case.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Dolphins tight ends coach Dan Campbell “would be the leading candidate” to become the interim coach if Philbin is fired.

There has been no word from the Dolphins today, but Schefter says they were “preparing to fire” Philbin last night. It appears owner Stephen Ross wanted to sleep on it, and he’s the guy who’ll make the decision.

Campbell has been with the Dolphins since 2010, when he began as a coaching intern, and took over their tight ends in 2011. He played for the Giants, Cowboys, Lions and Saints during an 11-year NFL career.

We took one positional coach and made him a head coach and it didn’t work out.

Next you just have to figure out how to get that money you have tannehill back….most over paid player in the NFL the Dolphins pulled a pay an pray for a qb with no deep ball who had one good season.

  4. whatnojets says: Oct 5, 2015 11:40 AM

They should hire “Bozo the Clown” as their new head coach.

  5. unbridledsexy says: Oct 5, 2015 11:43 AM

I’ve been fired once in my life and it was humiliating. I can’t imagine what it’s like to have national media covering the fact that you’re being fired.

I bet they are looking at hiring outside the org. Ross from what reports say has a huge ego, I bet he tries to save face by hiring a current TV guy like bug eyes, or square jaw. Super hair is too old…so I say its down to the first two. I think he prefers/offers square jaw big money.

  7. hockeykrishna says: Oct 5, 2015 11:45 AM

Wow, please don’t fire Philbin, at least not until the Fins play all their AFC East games.

Don’t fire him! Philbin’s coaching is a real advantage for Buffalo, New England, and the Jets!

With that said, what is going on in that locker room? An unattributed quote from a player “if we lose (in London), Philbin’s going to lose the room.”? Would that be Suh? Clearly the inmates are running the asylum in South Beach. IMHO, some players need to be shown the door if they are going to go this route. VERY troubled team. No veteran leadership.

Miami is now the official AFC East Dumpster Fire. Bowles has the Jets playing for real, so they relinquish the title. However, if Rex keeps it up, he’s making a push for it too.

Never understood the point of firing a coach during the season. Can someone help me out here? Has that EVER led to significant turn around for a team?

I mean, all you are doing is replacing him with a member of his staff. You’re not really shaking anything up.

Kind of seems like doing something just to tell your fans you are doing something.

Omal Kelly of Sun Sentinal reports Philbin is fired, Campbell is new head coach

  10. scrp2 says: Oct 5, 2015 11:47 AM

Leading replacement candidates for Regis Philbin would be Cam Cameron, Mike Shula or Kathy Lee

  11. mwcarolina says: Oct 5, 2015 11:47 AM

Dan Campbell!!?? i actually remember his playing career, not a bad blocking TE…however, even on an interim basis, is he ready to be a head coach?? it’s sad that Miami’s head coach and defensive coordinator aren’t options due to how bad they are.

  12. realfootballfan says: Oct 5, 2015 11:49 AM

What could go wrong. A guy who was an intern under the great Tony Sparano being your new HC and boss of the OC that he’s been reporting to for over a year now, lol. Got a match for this dumpster fire?

  13. jchemengr says: Oct 5, 2015 11:50 AM

Campbell is Suh’s choice. That being the case , what else can they do.

  14. deacon85 says: Oct 5, 2015 11:51 AM

There’s just something macabre about all these articles on Philbin and his supposedly imminent termination. I don’t have an opinion on Philbin one way or the other, but I hope they either fire him or tell him he stays, just so that we can stop reading these headlines.

Funniest thing about your post is I knew exactly who you were talking about without googling lol

Meanwhile, New England continues its revenge tour. I thought this was the year Miami and Buffalo, perhaps even The Jets, supplanted New England? Yeah, okay.

  17. theknobonline says: Oct 5, 2015 11:53 AM

Dan is a pretty hype guy he might be the energy at the Coach position to lead us to an actual nice to watch game

  18. zeke2517 says: Oct 5, 2015 11:56 AM

    Well, he got fired.

  19. duffelbagsports says: Oct 5, 2015 11:57 AM

    Done. He’s Fired

  20. head1994 says: Oct 5, 2015 11:58 AM

best of luck to great person… it’s sucks it didn’t work out but that’s life… good luck philbin. Anyways i like the choice Dan has done a great job developing young TEs. Clay, Sims, Stoneburner and even jordan cameron looks back to his pro bowl form. Phinsup

  21. mikeytoth says: Oct 5, 2015 11:58 AM

Well, he’s gone. Looks really good when you say on national tv that you feel that your job isn’t in jeapordy. What an ass.

  22. brobbins5287 says: Oct 5, 2015 11:58 AM

Since when is there a specified career path to head coach? Why can’t a tight ends coach take over the reigns?

  23. RegisHawk says: Oct 5, 2015 11:59 AM

Ross is on the phone with Michigan to see how much it would cost to buy out nutjob’s contract…

  24. rjpats says: Oct 5, 2015 12:00 PM

I hope they keep Philbin forever

    Philbin/Tanenbaum 2016!

  25. ctfootballfan says: Oct 5, 2015 12:00 PM

Sorry to say dolphins fan he has been fired.

  26. romophobic says: Oct 5, 2015 12:02 PM

Anyone who watched Hard Knocks knew this guy was a in way over his head. You just can’t lead grown men with such a wuss attitude. You need to have a fire, a motivation in you and he never had it. Just another coordinator who never should’ve been an HC.

Now if they can find someone to take on Suh’s (aka Haynesworth 2.0) contract, they might be in business.

  27. mongo3401 says: Oct 5, 2015 12:03 PM

Ross will try to get a “Big Name ” retread once the season ends. He now also has to impress his new buddy, Warren Buffet who has informally adopted Suh. Suh could now do the merengue nude in too of a flagpole and Ross would applaud him for it. Believe it or not, it’s true. Stephen Ross reason for signing Suh goes WAY beyond thenfootball field. An ego driven person like Ross loves have one of the richest people on the planet on his sideline dressed in a Suh jersey. This is comical

  28. jag1959 says: Oct 5, 2015 12:17 PM

His only experience is four years as a TE coach , all in that organization. They are going from disposing of Philbin to someone they see as disposable?

  29. rogerbueno11 says: Oct 5, 2015 12:30 PM

Phillbin please take Coyle with you on your way out!

  30. edelmanfanclub says: Oct 5, 2015 12:43 PM

I actually remember Campbell as a TE when I was in middle school. He’ll be a young HC for this team

  31. monstersmasher says: Oct 5, 2015 12:44 PM

With all this talent, I bet Mike Shanahan could get this team many victories. A two time Super Bowl head coach and a desire to still coach.

  32. liltifer says: Oct 5, 2015 12:47 PM

Campbell seems like a tough fiery guy, so I like the move…

  33. annes22 says: Oct 5, 2015 12:47 PM

I can’t believe what people are writing on here. Everyone seems to have an answer!! Maybe some of you should change your day jobs and become NFL coaches, you know so much about it!!! Oh by the way, you would make more money too.

  34. sdchicken says: Oct 5, 2015 12:52 PM

I don’t understand firing a coach after 4 games during the season. Ok you prove your point that management is not satisfied, but the remainder of the season never goes well. Maybe they get 2-3 wins, then lose the rest while trying to adapt to a new scheme and style, just to wait for a new coach to be hired in February. Seems like a lot of drama with no reward until the new permanent guy is hired.

  35. oxbandit says: Oct 5, 2015 1:11 PM

please go back to the real dolphin logo. we dont have a dolphin we have a minnow and thats what we play like, a bunch of minnows

  36. godfatherd says: Oct 5, 2015 1:13 PM

I hope they go with Dan Campbell. I always like seeing a blocking TE with good hands get a shot at anything.
