Report: Dolphins parting ways with Kevin Coyle

AP

Before the Dolphins fired coach Joe Philbin on Monday, there were reports that had defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle on the chopping block as well.

During interim coach Dan Campbell’s introductory press conference, he said he wasn’t ready to talk about potential changes to the staff which meant Coyle was still employed if not exactly safe and sound in the job. Reports that the Dolphins had reached out to Jim Schwartz, Mike Smith and Greg Schiano about taking over their defense didn’t do much to make things any cozier.

The other shoe reportedly dropped on Thursday. Albert Breer of NFL Media reports that the Dolphins have decided to fire Coyle.

There’s no word on who will take over the Dolphins defense with Coyle out of the picture. Whoever does get the reins will be tasked with bringing together a defense that balked at playing Coyle’s scheme and held a closed-door meeting with coaches last week about making changes to it.

The new coach will also be tasked with finding a way to get big-ticket defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to perform at a level closer to the one he was at in Detroit before signing a huge contract with Miami as a free agent this offseason. It’s a full plate with a little more than a week to go before the Dolphins are back on the field.

He should get the same treatment Shireen Baratheon got.

It took them two days to do the obvious?

  3. iammrbinky says: Oct 8, 2015 1:55 PM

Hopefully they found someone from outside the organization because the staff Philbin put together was bad.

…so it took you 3+ extra days to come to this conclusion?…….better hustle guys & get a new D-coordinator, gotta play the mighty Titans in 10 days.

  6. gscott104 says: Oct 8, 2015 1:57 PM

Surprised it took this long for Campbell to make up his mind. That must mean one of the possible candidates is interested.

  7. mytor1962 says: Oct 8, 2015 1:57 PM

About dam time, should have fired him 2 years ago.

    lol

  9. phinfan says: Oct 8, 2015 1:58 PM

Its sad to see anyone let go. Coyle had really good defenses in 2012 & 2013… but sometime near the middle of 2014 it all just fell apart. Safe travels Coyle I’m sure you won’t be unemployed for too long.

  10. justanacehole says: Oct 8, 2015 1:59 PM

Having a too full of a plate all the time might turn out to be Suh’s problem now that he’s gotten paid.

  11. billsfan says: Oct 8, 2015 1:59 PM

Make Suh the DC. He’ll do what HE wants anyway…might as well make THAT the “scheme”

  12. scutz1972 says: Oct 8, 2015 2:00 PM

Well now they will win the next game for sure! Who are they playing? The unbeatable Titans!

  14. jag1959 says: Oct 8, 2015 2:02 PM

    Now there’s a shock, lol.
Color no one surprised. Suh-posedly this will lead to better things, it can’t lead to much worse.

  15. thesmartest1 says: Oct 8, 2015 2:02 PM

Well duh! You don’t spend all those resources on D and play like that.

  16. ilovethebay707 says: Oct 8, 2015 2:03 PM

THANK YOU. I always feel like the play on the field is ultimately up to the players, their professional athletes right? But this coaching staff couldn’t get a high school team motivated for a game let alone the NFL.

  17. jrbdmb says: Oct 8, 2015 2:05 PM

Yikes. Nothing like changing your defensive schemes (and offensive schemes, and half of your coaches) mid-season.

  21. liongator says: Oct 8, 2015 2:11 PM

Enough of coaches bringing “their system” and then trying to force the players to fit it. Then cutting good players and drafting different ones to fit a 3-4 instead of 4-3.
How about a coach that is versatile enough to build a defense around the players that he actually has and their strengths?

  22. dickshotdogs says: Oct 8, 2015 2:13 PM

Dolphins using same tactics as before.
Try to interview people for jobs when they still have someone in the position. You will never attract first class talent using that approach.

  25. therealraider says: Oct 8, 2015 2:15 PM

Suh has one responsibility and thats to tackle the person with the football. Thats his role in every scheme. He got paid and now he’s let up in his effort. We’ve seen this before.

  26. azarkhan says: Oct 8, 2015 2:15 PM

Maybe if the next DC says “pretty please” to Suh, the overpaid lug will run the play that is called.

  27. freedomofspeechyesway says: Oct 8, 2015 2:18 PM

I mean we all knew the Suh signing was a bust move, but who thought that claim would be validated so quickly? He’s even too apathetic to play dirty, that’s how bad it is down there.

  28. Dug says: Oct 8, 2015 2:19 PM

    Suh rhymes with Haynesworth.

  29. irkjames says: Oct 8, 2015 2:21 PM

Goodbye to Joe Philbin and Kevin Coyle, who took one of the most prominent 3-4 defenses in the NFL and converted it to a 4-3, took one of the most dominant 3-4 OLBs in Cameron Wake and turned him into a 4-3 DE (which limits his prime strength: SPEED), cut our 2 best cover LBs in Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett to sign busts Dannell Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler, traded away CB Vontae Davis who went on to become a Pro Bowler, let go of our other starting CB Sean Smith, replaced both of them with CB Brent Grimes (good job Jeff Ireland, seriously) but also brought along his problematic wife, went all in a talented yet often-injured FS Louis Delmas, and turned Koa Misi from a 3-4 OLB to a 4-3 OLB to a 4-3 MLB and back to a 4-3 OLB in the last 4 seasons because they failed to add/development talent in the middle in almost half a decade.

Again, goodbye to these morons. They did it to themselves.

  32. theawkwardyears says: Oct 8, 2015 2:27 PM

Hey I think the Dolphins are right on track to win just as many Superbowls as the Lions did with Suh.

  33. phinsup2068 says: Oct 8, 2015 2:30 PM

Awesome….nothing like changing everything up in the first quarter of the season and having no replacements lined up. It really screams “we don’t care about the fans” when you cry uncle after game 4. Can someone please send Mr. Ross a mirror as a gift so he can figure out what to fix next. Sheesh.

  34. floriosnuts says: Oct 8, 2015 2:32 PM

Christ himself couldn’t get Suh to live up to that contract.

  35. kevpft says: Oct 8, 2015 2:40 PM

    But why?

  37. jacunn2000 says: Oct 8, 2015 2:46 PM

Greg Schiano??? Yep, this guy is a professional of winning over player’s hearts and minds…

  38. uglydingo says: Oct 8, 2015 2:56 PM

DB Coach for the past 4 years, Lou Aranumo is the new Defensive Coordinator.

  39. mongo3401 says: Oct 8, 2015 2:57 PM

But the team is putting up pretty sun shades over the stadium. They will make the place twice as uncomfortable by trapping all that nice humidity in. Their own players will be fainting from heat exhaustion

Let’s face it, since Ross has taken over this team things have gone from bad management, to really bad management to really silly stupid bad management. There isn’t a legitimate HC, DC or OC that wants into that system down there. Effectively Ross have created to what amounts to a Ponzi situation for coaches.

  40. bullcharger says: Oct 8, 2015 2:59 PM

Here’s the level that Suh performed at in Detroit:

    38-42.

That’s the bottom line. He received all sorts of praise, but it didn’t help them win games.

  41. General Lee A. Ware says: Oct 8, 2015 3:04 PM

The Dolphins are like that kid in high school that has a girlfriend, but doesn’t like her anymore. But doesn’t want to be single. So he keeps asking other girls out, and when he finally gets a yes, he dumps the first girl…

I’m sure Ross is on the phone with Harbaugh already… Hell at this point he might want to bring back and Saban

  42. piratefreedom says: Oct 8, 2015 3:06 PM

Wake is a bigger problem than Suh.
I think he must be hurt. The dolphin games I’ve seen he just doesn’t stand out the way he used to.

  43. fishyinalittledishy says: Oct 8, 2015 3:10 PM

Who knows what’s going to happen I am certainly not expecting to much so even just some good performances is going to be positive. We will probably be playing the roll of spoilers during the run in. Really thought we had a team this year. You really can’t tell until the season kicks off what you have and how it all is going to shape up. My biggest concern was depth on the O line and once injuries kicked in we would be in trouble. Just hope this new aggressive approach is what’s needed but watching football a lot of years think it’s going to take a miracle to turn this season around.

Suh is the kind of idiot that you know was always in it for the money. Once he got his fat check, he lost the passion to play harder than he needed to.

  45. angryamerican66 says: Oct 8, 2015 3:18 PM

Good. Most of that inept staff should have already been fired. That whole team is a goatscrew.

  46. iltibido says: Oct 8, 2015 3:18 PM

Scheme, having Suh, Wake & Vernon playing reactionary D-line and not attacking!! That is why Coyle and Philbin are both gone. You don’t take those gus and tell them don’t attack the offense; wait and see what they are going to do before you do anything!! Bye, Bye; you won’t be missed!!

  47. swagger52 says: Oct 8, 2015 3:22 PM

    Not sure if

    Ndamokung Haynesworth or RG Tannehill

    is the problem.

Unfortunately, with the AFC East, everything is so over-hyped it is hard to sort out the chaffe.

  48. irkjames says: Oct 8, 2015 3:31 PM

Lions fans over here acting as if they’re thankful that Suh left when they should be praying for a win lol

  49. ragnarthegreat says: Oct 8, 2015 3:36 PM

This might be a silly question but can a new DC come in and implement a new scheme and get everyone ready to play it in just two weeks? Many times they bring in players who already know their system but it is too late for that.

I don’t really know if it is reasonable to expect improvement or not. It seems like a tall order. Laying ground work for next year seems more likely.

  50. anywho123 says: Oct 8, 2015 3:43 PM

Everywhere he goes “A Boy named Suh” gets a coach fired. This should be a fun one to watch!

  51. hardspun says: Oct 8, 2015 3:43 PM

things have gone downhill since they changed one of the better logos.

doesn’t even look like a dolphin anymore

  52. miamismyteam says: Oct 8, 2015 3:51 PM

First off, he came from the crappy Bengals..second point I like to make is he couldn’t get the most out of Vante Davis who for me had more more upside then the warm six pack we traded him for.. Good riddance I say… Never liked him period…

  53. rocketmcstonebreaker says: Oct 8, 2015 3:55 PM

Suh is the most overrated player in the league, not named Eli Manning.

  54. clbrwns says: Oct 8, 2015 3:59 PM

Glad to see this stuff happening in other places than where my Browns play! The circus is also in town in Miami.

  55. promickey says: Oct 8, 2015 4:08 PM

So who’s idea was it to bring in a DT who is paid like a franchise QB and change the system that he is used to playing in. More evidence that Philbin is not a NFL head coach. He’s a stretch as a coordinator. Joe seems like a very nice man but is limited to being an assistant only in the NFL.

  56. therillest says: Oct 8, 2015 4:15 PM

Well if Tampa beats the Jags this Sunday, Miami may get a shot at offering Gus Bradley the job…

  57. helldog33 says: Oct 8, 2015 4:18 PM

Watch them fire Bill Lazor next Monday….gotta stagger the coaching turnover for no apparent reason….welcome to Fintardation.

  58. mogogo1 says: Oct 8, 2015 4:28 PM

Big thing to watch now will be whether Suh comes around with a new coach or continues to do whatever he wants.

  59. ncphinsfan says: Oct 8, 2015 4:34 PM

The best part of this nonsense is reading everyone’s professional opinion. I watch Suh and he hustles and takes on cut blocks and double-triple teams in all three games. Yes, he is tired and may take a play off because the Offense put them on the field for 75% of the game with 3 and Outs. He is not the problem! So, criticize away with all your knowledge. However, I do not want to see anything from a Lions Fan 0-4 because you suck more than the Dolphins ! Without Suh- how is that working out for you?

Bills and Jets Fans.. Sure kick us, but remember you beat a bad Colts and Dolphins team, you are going no where but 8-8 at best. Patriots are Cheaters, need I say more.

  60. tonebones says: Oct 8, 2015 5:18 PM

Usually coaching changes don’t work without considerable personnel changes too. When a team wins, all the coaches are brilliant, and when a team loses, they’re all bad coaches. That’s funny because most NFL coaches who have been around a while, have been part of really good teams and really bad teams. But the owners are just trying to appease us fans, and we’re not too bright when it comes to this subject.

  61. samoanjungle says: Oct 8, 2015 5:26 PM

Prediction – Kevin Coyle will be the DB coach again in Cincy next year.
The Bengals will let Vance Joseph interview for DC elsewhere next year after blocking him this year.
We will welcome Coyle back – he did well here.

Ndamukong Haynesworth is totally knuckle-headed coach killer. It doesn’t matter who tries to coach him. Making him the centerpiece of your defense will set you back years.

  65. styro1 says: Oct 8, 2015 6:32 PM

The Dolphins better hurry up and start winning if they want to win the AFC East, LOL!

  66. styro1 says: Oct 8, 2015 6:38 PM
