California bans use of “Redskins” name

The nickname used by one of the NFL teams has no been banned in a state where three NFL teams do business.

Via NBC News, California governor Jerry Brown signed into law on Sunday a provision banning schools from using the term “Redskins” as a team name or logo. The law, which becomes effective on January 1, 2017, affects four California schools.

The National Congress of American Indians said the development should be a “shining example” for the rest of the country — a significant statement since many supporters of the name insist that Native Americans aren’t (or at least shouldn’t be) actually offended by the name.

The Washington NFL team has refused to change its name; opposition has been sporadic, and the issue has become polarizing. Even if the name changes, the debate regarding whether it should have changed will continue for years, if not decades.

  1. Yup California, where illegals are treated better than US Citizens.

The marxists commie left strikes agains.

  2. Yay! When is the next book burning master government! Putting more and more things on the “list of things we can’t say” is the opposite of progress.

  3. Too bad CA can’t pass laws that bring in more businesses. Instead they pass touchy-feely liberal crap that won’t do one thing to make life better for anyone in the state. That type of thinking is why I moved to TX earlier this year.

  4. I live in Green Bay, mere blocks from Lambeau field. It is located on the corner of Lameau and Oneida streets. As in the Oneida Indians. As you walk around you see monuments to them around all the Packer greats, speaking of there importance to the foundation of this team. , and Lambeau field. There is an “Oneida Nation” gate to enter Lameau field. The term redskin is offensive to them, as it is to me. As it should be to you.

  5. I’m generally against government edicts like this but I really don’t see the incentive for Snyder not to change the name. If you’re a Redskins fan, if they changed the name is that all of a sudden going to make you not be a fan? I doubt it. You change the name and no longer offend those who are offended(reasonable or not) and even if you don’t care about that you rake in all types of new revenue from fans buying jerseys and other gear sporting the new name. Snyder can act like he’s doing it for some moral reason or like the NFL is forcing him to, however his PR team wants to spin it, and regardless he benefits.

  6. They also simultaneously passed a law banning chewing tobacco from major league baseball games in the state. Yes, that’s right, any MLB player who wants to chew won’t be able to at any game on California soil. Jerry Brown has completely jumped the shark.

  7. With everything that is wrong with this state (I live in LA), this is what Brown focuses on? Businesses are leaving faster than anyone can count, taxes keep going up, illegal aliens get treated better than actual citizens, but let’s ban a nickname. That will solve everything. Brown is a joke of a governor. It was that way in the 70’s and it is now.

  8. As a Californian I don’t know one single person that would’ve voted for this. I’m liberal in most ways but Feinstein and Boxer make me sick. And this “safe haven city” crap needs to stop.

  9. Indians, Braves, Chiefs, Blackhawks, Seminoles, are all Okay?
The Tomahawk Chop, Chief Wahoo that’s not offensive or mocking?

How about Red Mesa High in Arizona, located on a NAVAJO reservation, and where 99.3 percent of its students are Native American and PROUDLY call themselves Redskins. I had the pleasure of visiting their campus in the fall of 2013 and witnessed as much Washington Redskins gear being worn and displayed as I have witness at any NFL game.

Red Mesa High School is located in Red Mesa, Arizona, which is about 25 miles southwest of the Four Corners. The school is located on the Navajo Reservation and is a public school.

    Mission Statement:

“To provide quality education for successful interaction in the changing technological world while enhancing Navajo culture”

  10. No shortage of Rush listeners in the comments section of this post.

It’s unfortunate when football stuff gets political, because many of the responses above show the ugly side of human nature. Spewing hate for those who see the world differently than you do is not a redeeming quality.

  11. I wonder if “Progressive” Jerry is cognizant of the history of the state of Oklahoma, how it’s name originated and by whom. Funny how history is being re-written in this country.

  12. Our pop warner team changed their name 3 years ago from that to the Warriors.

It had no effect on the team but the Indians in our area came out to support the games after the name change.

No one is mad around here.

  13. Many of those people who say Native Americans are not offended are actually Native Americans, including several schools on reservations that have Redskins as their neickname.

PFT and anyone else who wants to keep writing this crap can screw off.

Besides if California opposes something the rest of the sane country should probably support it.

  14. I have auburn colored hair and I find the use of the term “red head” to be offensive, just like Indians and “red skins”. Not even to mention “ginger”, “carrot top”, “fire crotch” etc. Hope my grand kids live to see a day that all these words are banned.

  15. California being California. Sanctuary state hemoraging jobs and this is what Gov Moonbeam is signing into law? Cannot wait till Im able to make my relocation out of here to Texas in 2017

  16. @eagleslakers

I’ve been a Redskins fan for over 40 years. If they changed the name, yes, I would stop supporting the team. The only way the team changes its name is if the league forces it to and if that’s the case, that’s the last straw for me.

  17. Pathetic!!!! I have numerous Native American friends and none of them are bothered by the Redskins name. This country is weak and if this is considered a “shinning moment” then its lights out for common sense and a win for the pc cry babies like mike florio.

  18. @DarkChocolate

You make a comment about hate and start it stating basically that anyone who disagrees with this (or you), must listen to Rush. That’s a very ignorant statement, but I’m not surprised form someone who voted twice for the worst president in the history of the United States, wants all guns removed from society, feel the rich should be taxed at 70% and will be voting for Hilary. (see what I did there?)

I also live in Green Bay and your comment is unfounded. Just because of a few monuments you can make this claim? Maybe the Oneida, who own most of the land in the NW corner of GB, are laughing all the way to the bank. You do realize they own several casinos and banks?

Where do you get your info regarding their being offended by the term Redskin? Enlighten us.

  20. You know…… I really didn’t even like the redskins til a couple years ago. I applaud Snyder for standing his ground. I’m offended by offended people!

  21. The only logical solution to this is to remove all NFL teams from the state of California. Enough with this politically correct BS.. The name Redskins isn’t even derogatory..

  22. In this country being a professional victim for fun and profit is just another way of pursuing an opportunity. If making excuses was a job there’d be no unemployment.

  23. As education and healthcare fails, no sign of water for years…. Rather than correct this major issue they fix this?????? Politicians with no teeth

  24. PART II of the same “BILL” ,,,automatically enrolls all ILLEGALS who get a drivers license,,as “REGISTERED VOTERS”..ARE you freaking kidding me? An illegal walks into DMV gets a Drivers Lic,,and becomes a registered voter? Yet the guy walking the street is now banned from using the word redskins?

  25. Weather the name changes or not, I will wear my REDSKINS gear until the day I die and there are millions of REDSKINS fans that I’m sure will do the same.

  26. Ha ha, so cute! So let me get this straight. Come to Cali illegally and u and ur family live off my hard earned dollars but don’t use the word Redskins or the state losses it’s mind. So cute! By the way, Toyota just left the state and HP is going out of business. Priorities.

  27. The Tule River Tribal Council, located in the heart of California’s Central Valley, wrote a letter to California Gov. Jerry Brown urging him to allow Tulare Union High School to continue using the “Redskins” mascot.

Colusa and Calaveras high schools also use “Redskins”.

I doubt any of them will be hiring Florio to represent them.

  28. Hey Jerry, how about you make better use of your expensive time and come get a look at the obscene state of the road on the street where I live? If you mind to fix it, I would appreciate, especially in light of the hefty bill you send me every month of April.

Oh, by the way: does banning the R word make water suddenly materialize, somehow?

  29. These are the same people that will want you arrested soon if you disagree with their opinion on climate change.

I wonder if “Progressive” Jerry is cognizant of the history of the state of Oklahoma, how it’s name originated and by whom. Funny how history is being re-written in this country.
    ————————
But Oklahoma (red people) isn’t quite the same thing and wasn’t used as a derogatory term. And Chief Wright who came up with the name, saw it as referring to an all-Indian state (before the “white man” stole it for himself in the land rush), so who’s rewriting history here? Redskin, like the N-word, were both originally just descriptors, but later picked up derogatory connotations. So a better argument is that the Redskins name was never meant to show offence and that none is meant now. And I don’t see it as any more offensive than “white man”. However, given the unfortunate past derogatory linkage to redskin, and past history of terrible treatment and at times near-genocide of native Americans, it might be better today to steer clear of any potential offence, however slight or unintended. And I prefer the team’s original nickname “Braves” anyhow.

  31. When Redskins name goes, then targets will be set on the Packers. (Meat Packers, killer of those cute farm animals).

  32. I’m also offended by Vikings.

Please change the name for no reason other than I decided to start being offended by it today.

  33. I’m offended by being called “white” since my skin is not the same color as copy paper.

There are no “black” people. Those who originate from Africa are shades of brown. Many from India are darker brown the many Africans, why aren’t they called black?

The end game of the PC is the elimination of football since it favors the physically superior.

The PC are truly the No Fun League

  34. In fairness, shouldn’t Jerry also ban Amanda Blackhorse (one of the main instigators in this nonsense) from visiting California until she changes her surname to something less offensive?

  35. The gold miners of 1849 aka 1849ers aka the 49ers forcibly removed and murdered 100K Native Americans during the Gold Rush while raping their women and children… FACT. No outrage whatsoever… Smh

  36. There are some awful human beings showing themselves out in this thread. There is nothing worse than listening people trying to cover up their bigotry with political leanings or “freedom of speech” whines. You people are disgusting.

  37. skinsprinting says:Oct 11, 2015 10:26 PM

Perhaps all mascot names should eliminated from all sports ….Youth to Professional ?

They should please the PC police I would think ?

I am fairly liberal with my beliefs but the PC crowd to me is just getting out of hand. skinsprinting, I think it may not be that far fetched that there could be time down the road where a movement will be made to ban mascots and logos. Why? because somewhere there is someone who is offended by something. When did we become such a bunch of wussies that we are offended by so much?

  38. Our local high school teams are the Braves, we’re going top need a new team mascot name.

Was thinking if it’s ok to change our name to the Cowards? How does that sound?

  39. To Bleedingfacemask:

How about changing those team name to the Native Americans? The Colusa Native Americans. That sort of works, doesn’t it? Does that inspire your kids and parents? Something they can be proud of and invest their hopes and sensibilties about team accomplishment and excellence? Sure, you can do that. That’s good enough for YOU.

  40. All this is is politicians acting like they care to get votes. Liberals make their livings off these votes. These people don’t really care.

  41. Democrats and liberals feast on “caring” about stuff like this. It’s keeps them voting blindly democratic year after year. Charles Barkley “poor people have been voting Democratic forever and they are still poor”. It’s a total sham and a shame.

  42. My state is used to dragging the rest of the country, kicking and screaming (and whining), into the future. Proud of my state yet again, wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

  43. Really all this fuss by people who couldn’t, or WOULDN’T, go out for team sports in first place.

It’s not their form of collective. McCarthy-ites, but it doesn’t count if your McCarthyism is from a certain group.

  44. My other cousin says their high school is changing to the Consicentious Objectors. It was the only suggestion their naming committee thought had enough syllables.

  45. PC Liberals are out for themselves… pushing their fake outrage and acting like the care to get minorities to vote for them. Meanwhile, they go home to their huge estates and don’t give them on shred of thought. #CareersMadeOffMinoritiesVotes

  46. Not only should all team names, but so should team colors. How many gangs associate themselves with a team because of its colors. No more marching bands either because they play music to fire people up that could lead to violence.

  47. Im a die hard REDSKINS fan and its nice to read all these posts supporting the name. I think people are really sick of the PC liberals PFT doesn’t seem to care what the MAJORITY of their readers think but they should

  48. We can all have fun with this, but let’s look at this with a critical eye.

Think about what’s happening here – you have a government entity banning a word – yes a word – of an entity that exits 3,000 miles away.

All fine and dandy if you are a social justice warrior who feels there term redskin is ‘offensive’, but think it through. What’s next? What if a word that you don’t have a problem with gets banned?

There are a couple of words – one starts with N, one starts with B – that are used prominently in a specific type of music. Want the government of say, Kansas, banning those words?

The name ‘redskin’ is almost immaterial to this situation – this is some VERY scary territory we are entering here.

  49. Hey, here’s a novel thought. If you don’t live in California, shut your trap. This is our state and our elected officials. Unless that is of course you want US butting into YOUR state’s business.

No, because never has one state adopted legislation that was then applied to other states.

    Nope, never happens.

  51. Great.

Whatever stops people from moving to California.

As a 4th generation Californian, I grow tired of all the transplants who spew hate about the best state in the Union.

Those who want to move to Texas, belong in Texas.

And to all the conservatives out there: If your GOP actually had a viable candidate for president in the past 8yrs, you wouldn’t be in the situation.

McCain and his brilliant sidekick Palin, Romney and his hairdo and now Trump or Carson, or if you’re lucky, another Bush.

    Pathetic.

The conservative movement is done, the GOP is a shell of itself and the democrats will have control of the White House for another two terms.

You have no one to blame but yourselves and judging by the nonsense you people spew, you’ve earned it.

Take your medicine donkeys and stay out of California.

Neither is passing a law against a WORD because some people dont like it. I hate Rush Limbaugh btw. Assume much? I love the band RUSH though.

  53. Wow, I heard it’s going to cost one school ~$750,000 to make the changes. So I guess schools are well funded…or did these government morons neglect to think about this while they were patting themselves on the back?
