Good news has been in short supply for the Lions this season and that’s not changing on Wednesday.

Coach Jim Caldwell announced that linebacker DeAndre Levy will have surgery on his hip and be out of the lineup indefinitely. There hasn’t been a determination about whether Levy will be placed on injured reserve, but he’ll be out for the season if the team does go that route because they’ve already used their designation to return on cornerback Alex Carter.

Levy missed the first four games of the season because of the hip problem before returning to the lineup against the Cardinals last Sunday. It was a brief return as he was out of the game before halftime after aggravating the injury and Caldwell admitted after the game that it was possible that Levy would miss the rest of the year.

Levy signed a five-year extension with the Lions before the start of the season, so he’s in the team’s long-term plans and that may weigh into a determination about trying to get him back for what’s looking like a lost season in Detroit. Josh Bynes started in Levy’s place in the first four games and will likely return to the lineup with Levy out.
