Former Giants safety Tyler Sash, who was found dead in his Iowa home in September, apparently died of an accidental overdose of pain medications.

According to the Associated Press, an autopsy by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s office said his cause of death was an ''accidental mixed drug toxicity involving methadone and hydrocodone.’' The announcement also said his history of painful injuries from his football career was a contributing factor.

Sash will also be tested from the brain disease CTE, and the results of those tests will be available in eight to 12 months.

The medical examiner said a recent shoulder dislocation contributed to his history of pain. He had a prescription for the hydrocodone but not the methadone.

Sash played two seasons for the Giants, including winning a Super Bowl ring with them in 2012. In 2013, he was suspended four games for violating the league’s PED policy.
