Report: Nate Solder to miss rest of year with torn biceps

AP

Patriots left tackle Nate Solder left last Sunday’s victory over the Cowboys with what the team called an elbow injury and did not return before the end of the 30-6 victory.

Solder said Monday, via WEEI.com, that there wasn’t anything wrong with his elbow, but it still looks like it is going to be quite a while before Solder is back in the lineup for New England. Jim McBride of the Boston Globe reports that Solder will miss the rest of the season with a torn biceps that will require surgery.

Solder has started every game for the Patriots over the last two seasons and has only missed one game since joining the team as a first-round pick in 2011. That’s made him a mainstay on a Patriots line that has seen plenty of other players come and go since Solder joined the team.

Marcus Cannon has been the primary backup tackle, so his playing time is likely to increase in the coming weeks. The Patriots have been fond of shuffling around the pieces in front of Tom Brady this season, however. That has allowed several different players to get experience at different spots and will give the Patriots options about how to staff their line in the weeks to come.

Next man up! Solder’s a big loss but if any team can overcome it, it’s the Pats.

Vollmer moves to LT, Cannon will go to RT would be my guess.

Also think Belichik will look to trade for a decent LT with one of the teams in fire sale mode.

More sacks for Brady on the way.

Every year we loose someone who might not be a household name but is a key contributer. 2 years ago it was mayo, wilfork and gronk. Last year it was mayo and Ridley and now solder. get well soon and go pats!

Sorry to hear Solder will miss the rest of the season, he’s going to be missed; but, Belichick has developed a pretty fluid and solid o-line. Hopefully the other guys will take up the slack.

  13. tigerlilac says: Oct 14, 2015 12:58 PM

That’s a huge loss. Solder is one of the more underrated guys on a team of underrated guys.

This makes the Williams pick up look even better. Whoever goes to left tackle will have Williams as the blocking tight-end next to them.

No big loss. Nate’s been getting beat a lot the last two games. Hardy ate his lunch on Sunday.

If it was Logan Mankins, that would be another story. Cannon will have to step up. There’s a fine line between starters and ‘second team’ at the Pats. Has a lot to do with Brady taking a cut in pay (which is the real reason the Pats are so good, so often).

If I was in Indianapolis, I wouldn’t be getting too excited about this news.

Nate Solder is a big loss? Solder has played reasonably well this year but to term this a “big loss” is a very large exaggeration. I guess you can say losing any veteran player is a loss though.

Every team loses a few starters to IR. This is one the Pats should be able to withstand. No team does more with less than the Pats O line. Nothing close to a pro bowler on that line in years. Coaching matters!

  38. yosoyfiesta87 says: Oct 14, 2015 1:21 PM

  41. shadywarrior says: Oct 14, 2015 1:29 PM

If there’s anyone I cuss out from my living room, it’s Nate Solder. Obviously I don’t wish injury on him, but I’ve come to accept that he is what he is, an average NFL LT. He struggles against very good pass rushers sometimes, as evidenced against Greg Hardy last weekend, not always giving up the sack, but I see him get pushed off balance and into the pocket way too much. I remember Seabass played on the left side a few seasons back and acquitted himself well, so maybe slide him to the other side and put Cannon at RT, or give Cannon a shot at LT. This is what the Pats are built for, this is part the Belichick genius. You leave your fans wanting more in free agency while other teams make the sexy signings of big ticket free agents, and every year we hear people calling sports radio up, “why doesn’t he sign this guy or that guy?” This is the reason. All it takes is that one play where the guy’s bicep snaps and rolls up like a window shade and you’re out of not only a guy whose replacement is a huge step down in talent, but also a ton of essentially wasted cap space. Belichick signs affordable players and makes it work. Next man up.

Cannon is versatile but not good enough to start when they had 2 rookies at guard. It was one thing to plug him in due to injury during the game it’s another to count on him long term at LT. Against the Colts it may not be as critical but against the fronts in their own division and some of the others they will see we can expect Vollmer to be moved to the left side or another move to be made.

With talent-drain, injury and a suspension (Blount) the Pats started week 1 with only 9 of their 22 SB starters.

Solder is a tough loss but you’re lucky if you can keep a line healthy for a season, & Pats are good at coping with lineup changes.

  73. tigerlilac says: Oct 14, 2015 2:39 PM

How did Belichick prepare for this situations?

    1. In December of 2014, he signed back-up Marcus Cannon to an extension well before he could hit free agency for money many said was too rich but was minuscule for a left tackle.

    2. He beefed up his blocking tight-end position in 2015 with a trade for Williams who couldn’t find a role with the 0-5 Lions but has a nice niche with the Patriots as the tight-end getting the second most reps.

    3. After picking up Williams, Belichick exposed Cameron Fleming to waivers and the back-up tackle made it through to the practice squad. There is a good chance he will be promoted to the roster with the injury to Solder if Bill doesn’t swing a trade.

Bill is just better prepared for losing key players than are most coaches and GMs.

Line by line so he can keep up:
No QB is ‘happy’ to see their LT go out.

Everyone’s lineman hold on every play, lol. The only speed that matters with Brady is how quick the ball gets out. Few have ever been faster.

The ‘Boys barely survived a misfiring Giants team with Romo and Dez.

Again? They are the defending champs. If you are referencing the past then keep in mind 31 teams seasons end ‘badly’ every year. It’s a matter of degree. Coincidentally, there are also 31 teams out there that would trade how their seasons have ended for the last 15 years with how badly New England’s have.

BTW, what do you think the pats front 7 would have done to Romo? Weeden was on his back when he held the ball more than 2 seconds, what do you think would have happened to romo if they were actually trying to put a lot of pressure on the QB.

I think cowboys fans should count there blessings the score wasn’t worse than it was and romo didn’t have to play against that pass rush. If he had the season would definitely be over for the cowboys.

Man, I was looking forward to all those eligible/ineligible packages. Darn it!

That’s last year’s plan, new stuff coming. Better read your rule book kids.

Can’t cheat injuries……but if there was a way I’m sure the *patriots* would do it

Get well soon Nate; recommend getting some recoup time and get back to BV to do some fishing. Perhaps we will see you at Mile High in your orange and blue when the Broncos D repeatedly plants Brady into the turf November 29th!

Nate is not an all pro but will be missed. BB will figure it out like he always does. Isn’t it great to be a pats fan the last 15 years and know as a fan everything is good no matter what.

So, it’s on! I’ll be saving this one for the morning after 😉

He must have picked up one of those much heavier balls than Pats players are used to.

Nate is going to get extra smooches.

    Get well fast, Nate!
    You will be missed.

No problem, they’ll just keep running picks for Edelman, knowing they won’t get called for more than one a game.

You do realize that your offense won’t have the change to score had the cowboys offense was at full strength, the way the cowboy defense was manhandling the patriots offensive line and getting to the pretty boy. also one day the refs will call all those legal picks .
    __________________

Where was that ‘manhandling’ in the second half? Nobody makes better half time adjustments than Belichick.

About this, “also one day the refs will call all those legal picks” what besides great plays will they call those LEGAL picks?

Around here, we call that a house guest.

He was the only first round pick starting on offense. It is a loss, but we know that they can take less heralded players & make it work. It will require adjustments, but perhaps no team in the NFL does this sort of thing better.

Next man up! Solder’s a big loss but if any team can overcome it, it’s the Pats.

    ———————————————————-

You’re right on two counts: Solder is a big loss, and if any team can overcome it, it has to be the Pats. That’s the only team he plays for. Jokes aside, that’s a HUUUUGE loss!! One thing that Brady can’t deal with is guys falling in his lap – any QB for that matter.

EVERYONE in the league runs that play. EVERYONE. You ever watch Peyton Manning’s receivers? Do you remember Patriot Aquib Talib being knocked out of the playoff game on a pick play? EVERYONE runs it… But if the Patriots run it…oh no!!!!!!!!!!!
