Everson Griffen scratched due to illness

Hannah Foslien

Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen hasn’t missed a game since his rookie season, but that streak will come to an end on Sunday afternoon.

Griffen was a surprise member of the inactive list for Minnesota’s game against the Chiefs. Griffen is battling an illness that has apparently left him too sick to play this weekend.

Griffen leads the Vikings with three of their eight sacks on the season, so his absence will be a significant one as Minnesota tries to move to 3-2. Danielle Hunter is expected to start in Griffen’s place and the Vikings have just three defensive ends active on Sunday after ruling out Justin Trattou during the week.

Wide receiver Charles Johnson will miss a second straight game for the Vikings. Rookie Stefon Diggs had six catches for 87 yards with Johnson out in Week Four and could be in line for a heavy workload against Kansas City as well.
