The Falcons bolstered their linebacking corps with a veteran addition on Tuesday.

The team announced that they have signed linebacker Phillip Wheeler. Safety Charles Godfrey was released in a corresponding move.

Wheeler worked out for the Jaguars earlier this month, but he’s otherwise stayed off the radar since being released by the 49ers during their final round of cuts this summer. He spent the last two seasons with the Dolphins after signing a five-year deal with them as a free agent. Wheeler’s play in Miami didn’t live up to the expectations that came with that deal and he was released in March.

Falcons linebacker Justin Durant missed last week’s game with an elbow injury, although coach Dan Quinn said Monday that he expected Durant to practice with the team on Wednesday.
