As the Panthers try to build on their undefeated start this week against the Eagles, they’re getting an old performer back on defense but playing without another younger model.

Via Bil Voth of Black and Blue Review, the Panthers will get veteran defensive end Jared Allen back in the starting lineup, but they’ll be without rookie linebacker Shaq Thompson.

Allen missed last week’s win over the Seahawks, after he suffered a pinched nerve in his back during his first game with the Panthers, and lost feeling in his foot and leg. He’s practiced this week, and all indications are the back problem was short-term.

Thompson suffered a knee sprain last week. The first-rounder has been able to develop gradually behind standouts Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis.

The Panthers also got linebacker A.J. Klein and special teamer Teddy Williams back after they were cleared by the concussion protocol. They will come into play Sunday night against the Eagles, in an effort to limit Darren Sproles’ ability on returns.
