Pagano’s struggles are giving Grigson good cover

Amid plenty of rumors and reports and speculation about the future of Colts coach Chuck Pagano, G.M. Ryan Grigson has managed to avoid much of the public scuttlebutt regarding job security. Last Sunday night’s fake-punt fiasco has given Grigson even more cover.

But it may not last indefinitely, especially if owner Jim Irsay decides to fire Pagano and to hire someone who would want to hire his own G.M.

There’s no clear indication that Irsay is sufficiently frustrated to swing for the fences by sending Grigson packing, but it won’t surprise anyone if Irsay decides to hit the reset button.

It definitely won’t surprise those around the league who wonder what Grigson has done to merit a pass. Andrew Luck’s name already was on the card when Grigson got the job; beyond drafting Luck, what has Grigson done to put a championship team around him?

For now, Grigson remains close to ownership, enjoying (as one league source explains it) a very strong and solid relationship with Jim Irsay’s daughters, one of whom at some point will be running the team.

Soon enough, that relationship likely will be tested.
