Report: Players-only meeting led to “heated” exchange over Kaepernick

There were a couple of high-profile heated exchanges on Sunday. As it turns out, the 49ers have already had one.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, roughly four weeks ago the 49ers had a players-only meeting. One player called out Kaepernick during the meeting, triggering an exchange that Maiocco described as “heated.”

“In the days that followed, the individuals involved got together and cleared up their differences,” Maiocco reports, citing an unnamed source.

The problems still remain. As Jay Glazer of FOX reported Sunday, the team still believes Kaepernick has a high level of talent. However, “he’s struggling [with] confidence.” Glazer also said that Kaepernick “keeps to himself and is kind of on an island,” making it harder for teammates to help build his confidence.

Kaepernick’s inconsistent performances surely aren’t helping. For every game in which he looks good, there are multiple games in which he looks bad. In some games, he has looked horrendous.

At some point soon, the 49ers will have to admit that the postseason is an impossibility, and that the balance of the 2015 season will be an extended preseason for 2016.

The biggest question for 2016 becomes whether Kaepernick or someone else will be the quarterback. And whether, come 2016, it will even matter.
