Alex Mack says he’s not waiving no-trade clause

AP

The rumor mill may be churning, but Alex Mack is staying in Cleveland.

Via a statement released Monday night, Mack said he will not waive his no-trade clause ahead of the NFL’s trading deadline Tuesday.

That clause, Mack wrote, “was included for a good reason: I’m not leaving my teammates, coaches and Browns fans while there is work this season to be finished.”

He can opt out of his contract after this season, but he sounds like he’s not going anywhere.

Maybe when Browns coach Mike Pettine called it “a ficticious rumor mill” after Sunday’s game, he was telling the truth. Mack wasn’t the only Browns player whose name was linked Sunday morning to trade rumors, but he is probably the only one who really may have been traded before 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Joe Thomas makes a lot of money, and it’s hard to imagine the Browns actually trading him even if they received an outstanding offer. Paul Kruger makes a lot of money, probably too much for some team to desire via trade. Barkevious Mingo is, um, Barkevious Mingo.

Mack has the no-trade clause — and the opt-out before 2016 clause — because he was a restricted free agent before 2014 and the Jaguars signed Mack to an offer sheet that the Browns matched. Mack has been with the Browns since he was selected by then-coach Eric Mangini in the first round in 2009. Mack has been to two Pro Bowls.

You can’t fix stupid. I think your teammates and the fans understand how bad it stinks playing for Cleveland. Get out while you can and inspire others.

I like how some of these Browns players keep referring to “we have work to do” and “we’re building something here.”

The problem is they’re going the wrong way. They’re getting worse every year! I like the Browns. It stinks watching them lose year after year.

The problem is management. They had over 20 million in unused cap space this year. Who operates a team like that if you want to compete for a championship?

Ownership is not committed to putting best team on field. They certainly don’t put their money where their mouth is. If Denver calls methinks the no trade clause doesn’t just get waived, it gets whited out, shredded and burned.

You guys dont get it? Leaving a team mid season is a pain in the neck… You have to find a new house, meet new team coaches, find a school for the kids, why go through all that when you can JUST opt out after the season and choose the max contract or the best situation?

Barkevious Mingi is, um, someone who has loads of potential and has never played on a team in the NFL which fits his style and makes him do what he does best, rushing the passer, from a 3-4 OLB standpoint.

What u don’t get is that it happens every week throughout the season. Not trading per se but players get cut/waived. Then get picked up by other teams. Or players sitting at home for weeks get a call when someone gets injured. The players pack up n fly to new city. Family stays back home. Wife holds the fort. Kids stay in school. House hunt in the offseason.

Pete wake up John Shneider tell him to get up off his a** and finally add a quality Olineman before Russell takes one hit too many. We can’t keep waiting for college defensive linemen to develop into sufficient NFL offensive linemen. One thing to keep in mind is that T Jack is our back up qb. I love the guy as long as he’s holding the clipboard for Russell Wilson.

Come on Mack, please tell me you just playing the part. Because you would be dumb to not want to be in a better situation. Its not like you would lose your starting role on another team and your teams season is over with. Nothing else to finish. You want to continue blocking for McCown or whoever they trot out on the field?

  11. borisbulldog says: Nov 3, 2015 3:11 AM

He’s not going anywhere because the Browns 3 #1 O-Line picks can only give McCown 2 seconds of pass protection and are NFL last in running the ball!

Dwayne Bowe also thinks the Browns will be good … he’s been watching them play all season long

Bunch of noble masochists in Cleveland.

  14. mapedog1 says: Nov 3, 2015 6:21 AM

Why would Haslam spend all of the cap money when he knows he can pay bottom dollar and sellout every game? Smart business. Stupid fans.

  15. oldcracker says: Nov 3, 2015 6:34 AM

It’s the damn coaches! The Browns have a lot of talent on the field, but their Pop Warner/high school coaches can’t figure out HOW to use them, or COACH them to play differently.

I swear that each week, over Pettine’s reign, the Browns actually get worse. Yet, what do we do? Let the “coaches” continue to learn at this level, or blow it up and start over….once again?

Remember, this is Banner’s & Dumbardi’s coach, not Ray Farmer’s. Banner, a suit salesman from Philadelphia, ran out of the Eagles’ FO, probably heard about how great of a high school coach Pettine’s dad was from his kids, and figured he found the next Andy Reid/Mike Holmgren.

  16. oldcracker says: Nov 3, 2015 6:36 AM

Pettine is on an ego trip that (hopefully) will cost him his job.

  17. bernieknowsfootball says: Nov 3, 2015 7:20 AM

Trade the entire coaching staff to a city in the Canadian football league, and Ray Farmer too !!!

  18. TheDPR says: Nov 3, 2015 8:25 AM

Who wouldn’t want to be traded out of the ‘factory?’

Check this dude for concussion symptoms.

  19. unclemo1 says: Nov 3, 2015 10:20 AM

It is time for Haslam to show some respect for the Browns Fans Get rid of the entire coaching staff GMs Etc. and get the right people in there and make a winner out of this team ,the fans deserve it If he is not going to step up to the plate and do this then sell the team to someone who will .I myself will not buy anymore Browns items nor attend anymore games until they right the wrong that has been done since 1999 I have been a lifelong Browns fan and I am tired of being the laughing stock anywhere I go when I say I am a Browns Fan R U listening Haslam ,what needs to happen is a empty Stadium for all the Home games next year and maybe just maybe you will wake up
