Blaine Gabbert: It’s fun to play ball again

When 49ers coach Jim Tomsula discussed his decision to bench quarterback Colin Kaepernick for this week’s game against the Falcons, he described it as a chance for Kaepernick to “step back and breathe” after eight games that have left the team in need of resuscitation.

Blaine Gabbert will take over at quarterback this Sunday, but Tomsula’s explanation of the move leaves uncertainty about whether he’s just a temporary alternative or if he’ll have a chance at taking over the job for an extended run this season. Gabbert said Wednesday that he’s not looking beyond this weekend.

“I’m just taking it as a chance to go out there and prove to this team what I can do,” Gabbert said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “It’s a great opportunity for me to go out there and play against a good Atlanta football team. I’m just going to go out there and enjoy this. It’s fun to play ball again, especially in the regular season. We’ve just got to get something going on offense.”

If Gabbert can get something going on offense -- a big if given his performance with the Jaguars -- the 49ers will have to consider sticking with him when they return from their Week 10 bye. Either way, the fact that the 49ers find themselves in this position means quarterback decisions are guaranteed to be a big part of their offseason.
