Report: Saints would let Payton explore options

AP

Sean Payton and the Saints have won three straight, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from linking Payton to other jobs in the near future.

Sunday morning, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that if Payton wanted to be a coaching free agent after this season, the Saints would be inclined to let him explore outside options.

Rapoport also reported that Payton has a “change of control” clause in his contract that could make him a free agent if owner Tom Benson is not in charge. Benson, 88, has been battling family members to keep control of his teams.

Whispers about Payton’s future have been out there for months. Previous reports have linked Payton to the Dolphins’ vacancy.

If the report about the Saints allowing Payton to pursue outside options becomes true, an interested team would be allowed to request permission after the Saints’ season to speak to Payton, and eventually to sign him. Before permission is granted, the two teams must negotiate the terms of compensation in the event the new team would hire Payton.

Pretty sure if Rita gained control both Loomis and Payton would be out.

I’m guessing the part about “letting him explore options” might be more about a power play in the Tom Benson succession plans for the team.

Any team that would deny its head coach the option of “exploring” other options would be stupid. Who would force a coach to stay if he really wanted out? Guaranteed, he could “arrange” to be out of a job by mid-season.

Why would he leave Drew Brees to go to Ryan Tannehill? You guys will say anything wont you?

Rappaport is just putting all types of misinformation out today isn’t he?

Ian had better come up with something more juicy than this to wash the dirt off if his face after that botched-from-the-start joe Thomas report.

Miami would be a good spot. It’s only a matter of time before the Pats collapse under the weight of all their misdeeds.

Payton could tell the Dolphins franchise how great it was to get Drew Brees over Daunte Culpepper

The “change of control” stuff is pure BS. RG made him take that clause out, when they negotiated the last extension.

He will be coaching the Giants next season.

Miami would be a good spot. They have nice bunch of players
to work on. Philbin did a terrible job for the time he was here.

We’d take him in SF in a heartbeat! Just saying. 🙂

I remember all the negative comments during RG’s Bounty Mess…but now I here comments about why don’t Payton consider us…what a fickle world we live in today…

I want the bounty TB gave up for Gruden, who at the time, had not won a SB.

Without what TB got, forget it.

“It’s only a matter of time before the Pats collapse ”

Lolz been hearing that for almost 15 years now, how’s that working out for you Fins fans.

Face it, Miami is a 2nd rate franchise with a 3rd rate owner. You won’t even make the playoffs much less win the SB as long as that owner is in place.

He’ll go to Dallas to be near his family. Garrett is toast. But Jerrah will have to give him the GM job. He may just stay in NOLA until Brees is done in a couple of years.

If Payton were a free agent coach, there would be plenty of suitors. I think there are even a couple of teams like perhaps Cleveland or Houston who aren’t necessarily inclined at this point to make a coaching change who might consider making a change if they can get Payton. Sort of like what the Chicago Cubs did after the 2014 season when Maddon became available.

    That makes total sense.

Hope you enjoyed the run of success, Saints fans – they’ll be back to being the Aints again pretty soon.

Born & bred Delco guy! We’d welcome him back to the Eagles with open arms & send the genius back to college!!!

If he can’t get the Cowboys gig then he’ll go nowhere. He moved his family near Valley Ranch and he flys there on his days off.

Winning fixes everything. Although they did lose to TEN. today.

Wow. Saints lose one head scratcher and the vultures start circling. He’s not going anywhere. He has a great setup where he is now. Benson is pretty much hands off and lets Payton run the team as he sees fit. Why would he leave that? For Jerrah who micromanages everything? PLEASE!
