Not long after Browns wide receiver Travis Benjamin told reporters he’d be willing to sign a new contract with the Browns if, among other things, the “right staff” was in place, Benjamin did a follow-up interview with Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal to clarify his comments.
The second time around, Benjamin was clear that he didn’t have any issue with the current staff despite the Browns’ struggles.
“The stuff about the ‘right staff,’ I was talking about the mistakes and eliminating things we’ve done on the field, like the right pieces we need,” Benjamin said, per Ulrich. “It’s obvious we’re losing, so something’s going on. I didn’t mean [to imply I was hoping for] anyone getting fired. We know that we have the winning material we need in house. That’s what I wanted to follow up and say.”
Benjamin originally said “as long as we get the right pieces in here and the right staff and anything we need to make this team great, I’m willing to stick by for the long haul.”
Benjamin’s rookie contract expires after the season. He’s having his best NFL season -- he’s playing for his fourth different offensive coordinator in as many seasons -- and has 48 catches for 736 yards and 4 touchdowns. Though Benjamin has always been a dangerous return man, his previous career best for receptions in a season was 18.
