NFL suspends Aldon Smith for one year

AP

The NFL has lowered the hammer on Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith.

Smith is suspended for one year, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

During his time with the 49ers, Smith had a number of issues related to substance abuse and off-field misconduct. The 49ers cut him in August after he was arrested for DUI, hit and run and vandalism, but the NFL did not immediately suspend him and the Raiders signed him.

Smith has played in all nine games for the Raiders this season, but now he’ll be ineligible to play until November of 2016.

Please save the comparisons, what Sheldon did doesn’t compare to the habitual criminals Hardy and Smith are, and this isn’t Smith first DUI he had one in 2012 two days later he gets stabbed at a party where two guys get shot, then another DUI and a trip to rehab then a yr later freaked out on a plane saying he had a bomb and would blow it up followed by this DUI hit and run, don’t make excuses for this bum he is on his 5th chance…..

Just hope this dont slow us down to much, wouldve been nice to have him down this last stretch of the season including all the division games. Go Raiders.

  36. justellinya says: Nov 17, 2015 5:36 PM

The man’s a mess. He can stay out of trouble for a year because he’s done it a couple times before in the last 4 years. Still, looking at the frequency and breadth of different charges against him since 2012, with the 3 DUI incidents as the most aggravating, I wonder if if can really get healthy in only a year. Sad, bad tale about a dude that could have re-written NFL records with his name beside them instead of obtaining criminal records with his name above them.

Greg Hardy was PAID for the ENTIRE 2014 season even though he appeared in only ONE GAME. He was suspended for four games without pay. That was his punishment. Four game checks for beating the living hell out of a woman. He has continued to thumb his nose at authority while with the Cowboys. To wit: Insensitive comments about guns blazing and Brady’s hot wife and wondering if she has a sister. Being late to meetings. Showing up coaches and teammates in public. More than once.

So your entire comment is false, made up of lies. Just like Hardy’s defense of as to how the woman was beat to hell. CTIGGS, how are those Cowboys doing? Karma, she is a mean witch.

Let me very clear hear folks, because apparently Raider fans do not understand this. Aldon Smith was made by playing behind the Cowboy, Justin Smith. He is an average defender at best. Playing behind the stud who never took on less than 2 players allowed him to use his long arms and accumulate sacks. Look at the tape of him playing when Justin did not. That’s right, he is non-existent, just like he is now!

  54. kenchun24 says: Nov 17, 2015 5:51 PM

Vikequeens & Donks lead the league in arrests dumbasestein. Raids tied with 7th lowest slot at 19 arrests (tied with Panthers,Steelers,Redskins) teams in the nfl with off field arrests. No cheating scandals, no double murders, no women or child beating from the Raiders.

Sucks as he was playing really well since Mack has been hurt all year, and it just means Mack will get double & triple teamed more.

I completely understand where you are coming from, and it totally looks as such.

The NFL and player do need to look into the matters after misconduct. Now I may not be familiar or recall all of Smith’s troubles but he does deserve a suspension, and I don’t know if his legal matters have been through the court system or not, but its pretty dangerous to start dropping the hammer so fast.

Just think if NHL would have reacted to the star player being in all that hot water, and then all of a sudden a lot of question marks start coming about the credibility of people and the scenario that went down.

Some players get DUIs or smoke some weed – DONE FOR A YEAR!! THROW THEM IN PRISON!!

    What a complete joke.

The League Office cant fix the horrible officiating but lets suspend as many players as we can for whatever reason we decide to.

The League Office and Goodell and the NFL is a joke. The NFL is becoming unwatchable. Most of the feature games are unwatchable. Like I said earlier there is 1-2 quality games a week. The rest i find other things to watch. And even the watchable games, you have to change the channel 100x during the 1st half because of all the stupid commercials.

Im quickly finding other things to watch during NFL games.

  92. radrntn says: Nov 17, 2015 7:27 PM

so he pleaded not guilty, and still has not been found guilty. He needs to appeal this right now.

I could understand if he is found guilty of a DUI, while he was not even driving a car, and the hit and run and vandalisim is for opening his car door and accidently hitting the car parked next to him. All he has to do is go to trial…if that is what the Santa Clara DA wants to use taxpayers money for. I don’t think a jury in America will find him guilty.

  93. grilsteav says: Nov 17, 2015 7:32 PM

No surprise here. He has multiple offenses already on top of his most recent one this past August, Oakland knew this when they signed him, so deal with it.

  94. granadafan says: Nov 17, 2015 7:35 PM

The Raiders should take a lesson from Pats and have their fans whine on every single thread about the “injustice”, use deliberate misinterpretation of science, ruin every single talk show, hold angry press conferences and demand apologies, and stonewall any and all investigation. Then stick your heads in the sand and go lalalalalalala.

  95. Cavs2016NBAWorldChampions says: Nov 17, 2015 7:36 PM

I find it absolutely appalling that Goodell can lie to the public, have Federal Judges tell him hes not being truthful, yet he makes 44 million and still has a job, yet players grt DUIs and smoke some weed yet they are suspended for a year.

Id love to see a player lie to a Federal judge and see what Goodell would do. Hes the biggest hypocrite. He tarnishes the NFL daily but he is pulling in 44 million. Most managers are hypocrites and scumbags and Goodell fits both descriptions

Maybe Aldon needs to go talk to Brady and see how he got out of his punishment.

Are you just punding on the keyboard randomly Or are you tryng to express rational thought? The league susended Hardy 10 games, but the players association appealed and it was reduced to 4. Can’t blame the commish for that.

You can however blame the commish for finding Brady guilty of something that scientific evidence proves never even happened, and even if you make the absurd leap of faith that it did happen, you have no evidence whatsoever that he had anything to do with it other than to say “Well, why else would this thing that didnt actually happen have been done? brady MUST have directed it”.

Conclusion: Hardy is a scumbag and the league got that punishment right. Aldon Smith is a scumbag and the league got that right too. But to lump Brady in with these guys is absurd.

A whole year is a joke, but this isnt the first time hes done something so whatever, it was good while it lasted.

He was def and factor and making an impact when on the field and gave us some good pass rush. This is where were gonna start regretting that Sio Moore trade abit now.

Just hope this dont slow us down to much, wouldve been nice to have him down this last stretch of the season including all the division games. Go Raiders.

    _____________________________________________________________

You mean Sio Moore who has hardly been able to play on a team with no talent at the position he plays? Sio has 10 whole tackles this season. He was traded because his injury has apparently made him worthless.

Heres my problem with the nfls code of conduct. You suspend a guy for a year with obvious problems. The one thing keeping him out of trouble, football your taking away for a year. I agree he shouldnt be allowed to play or practice because it is a privilege to play in the nfl. Instead of banishing these players why not give them the option to stay with the team without pay make it mandatory to go through couciling rehab or what ever they need during the suspension. The nfl caims to care about there players concussions etc. Instead of kicking this kid back to the negitive people/situations that got him here in the first place force this kid to see what hes missing and reflect on his bad choices. By keeping him away for a year you sentence this guy to death professionally and hell most likely end up in jail or dead. The nfl’s lack of care and military approach to discipline doesnt work for all players in the nfl every case is different. Just my opinion.

  109. cinzano08 says: Nov 17, 2015 9:10 PM

@swine, jets run league office thus no penalty on Richardson and no penalty on kicker caught manipulating footballs and no forfeiture of draft picks after being caught red handed tampering with other players like other teams had to do. Too many ex jet losers in NFL hq to have anything but mismanagement.

I hate to break it to you and most whiner fans, BUT… They aren’t on the other side of the Bay anymore. Haven’t been for years. They both play ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE BAY. Your team moved to the good side of the Bay in Santa Clara. They haven’t been in San Francisco for years. I know you so called 49er fans still don’t realize that

  116. finchy74 says: Nov 18, 2015 12:54 AM

Aldon deserves to be punished. He screwed up repeatedly. But is a year banishment what’s best for him and for the game?

Aldon has a support structure in playing with the Raiders that seems to be working (along with hopefully regular alcohol counseling).

But a year away from the game? No practices, no Sundays to get ready for. Is that good for an alcoholic?

As always, the responsibility is ultimately with the individual and regardless of what Goodell does, it’s Aldon’s responsibility to get his life on the right track. But I sincerely fail to see how a one year suspension is “good for the game” or how it is going to teach a lesson to a young kid facing a very serious problem. It very well could make it worse.

  117. racerx1225 says: Nov 18, 2015 4:21 AM

Sio Moore was replaced by Malcolm Smith, not Aldon Smith, they play opposite sides Einstein. Malcom Smith is having an almost Pro Bowl season too. Sio is a moron who I believe spit on one of thecoaches shoes. he is a htohead who gets dumbpenalties and now he is virtually worthless and has hadrly played. Oaklnd made out like bandits in that one.

Furthrermore, this is simply unfair, Aldon has not been convicted of anythign just charged and from what I have read, it is a bogus case.

The fact that Hardy is playing and Smith is not, is beyond me and PacmanJones should have been suspended for 4 games for ripping Amrai Coppers helmet off and blatantly smashing his unprotected head into it but this is the NFL. As in No Frikkin Longer reputable.

Goodell is a joke. Brady should have been banned the entire year.
