Seahawks promote Kevin Smith from practice squad, claim A.J. Francis off waivers

The Seattle Seahawks promoted wide receiver Kevin Smith from their practice squad to fill the roster spot vacated by the release of Super Bowl standout Chris Matthews on Tuesday.

Smith had six catches for 61 yards for Seattle in the preseason but has never been on an active NFL roster. He’s spent all season on the team’s practice squad after also spending the 2014 offseason on the team’s roster as well. Smith was well thought of as a special teams player in the preseason and could lend a hand there with Ricardo Lockette out for the season.

In addition to Smith, the team claimed defensive tackle A.J. Francis off waivers from the Miami Dolphins.

Francis had spent most of the last three seasons in Miami, but appeared in just one regular season game with the team. Francis missed all of the 2014 due to a left knee injury.

To make room on the roster, the team released defensive tackle David King.

King was inactive for Sunday’s game against Arizona after suffering a groin injury in practice last week. King appeared in four games for Seattle this season and recorded three tackles and a half sack. He was signed by Seattle off the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad last December
