Jaguars, Rams, Bengals to play London “home” games

AP

The Jaguars, Rams and Bengals will play so-called “home” games in London next season, the NFL announced today.

The Jaguars will “host” the Colts on October 2, 2016 at Wembley Stadium, part of the Jaguars’ annual commitment to play at least one game in London.

The Rams will “host” the NFC East team that finishes in the same spot in the standings as the Rams do in their division. That game will take place on October 23 at Twickenham Stadium, the rugby stadium that will be hosting an NFL game for the first time. It won’t be known until the end of the season which NFC East team that will be, and it’s also unclear right now whether the Rams will be giving up a St. Louis home game or a Los Angeles home game.

The Bengals will “host” Washington on October 30 at Wembley Stadium. It’s the first time Cincinnati has given up a home game. It could also make Washington the first team to play back-to-back games in London, if Washington and St. Louis end up in the same place in their respective divisions.

The NFL has not yet announced the kickoff times for the three games. This year, every NFL game in London kicked off at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time.

The league also may play a fourth International Series game. That might mean playing in Mexico City, or a fourth game in London.

So if the Rams move to LA, they are going to take away a home game from them in their first season back there? Seems like a flawless plan.

  2. paulrevereshorse1775 says: Nov 25, 2015 9:44 AM

Bengals have a home game that is 3950 miles away from home.

Rams have a home game that is 4200 miles away from home.

Jaguar have a home game that is 4250 miles away from home.

    Nice job, NFL

I can’t stand the London games. I have interest in watching a game at 9a on a Sunday…if the Rams are in Los Angeles their fans will be watching a 6 or 7 AM game.

Goodell and the NFL truely do not care about their fans, it’s to a point where they seem to hold the fans in disdain. I love football, but I really hate the league.

Oh, I guess we just have to take the bad… yet again.

Not fair to take away a teams profitability by playing home games that aren’t at home. I hope the “National” Football League reimburses the home team handsomely for this nonsense

One more thing to add to my dilemma: How long do I keep following a game I love that’s run by an administration I hate.

  16. redrew says: Nov 25, 2015 9:59 AM

Greedy Roger and his $$$ lovin Full 32 just stickin it to the fans three more ways.
The product is unwatchable. Excessive commercial breaks. Preposterous rule interpretations. Targeted vendettas against teams that refuse to kneel before Goodell and his henchmen.
NE Patriots fans welcome Jags, Rams, and Bengal fans to the short stick pile. Roger demands you smile and take it.
My suggestion to fans. Avoid pre and post game jibberish. DVR your game and fire past the hour of commercials they subject you to. Watch it on your terms….not theirs. Don’t let Roger dictate to you.
PS…….boycott ESPN…….all they do is lie.

    “Bengals hosting Washington”

This is truly remarkable. We have a professional NFL team playing an NCAA division one football team during the regular season.

How does this work? If Washington wins do they move up in the AP poll?

  24. hendawg21 says: Nov 25, 2015 10:11 AM

This crap is so ridiculous, with this push to play games thousands of miles away, and the BS officiating gaffs that continue to go on, the NFL is ruining it’s brand. When will this madness end???

  25. liquidzoo says: Nov 25, 2015 10:13 AM

So if, in the off chance, the Bengals make it to or win the Super Bowl the NFL is going to take a home game away from the AFL/NFL champions? That seems fair…

I admit that I liked the report that I heard the other day about expanding the season to 17 games (eliminate .500 teams making the playoffs, hopefully) and having a full slate of 16 games to play at neutral stadiums; but it doesn’t seem fair to a lot of fans to miss out on a home game to play in London or Mexico (or who knows where else…Germany? Italy? Japan?). It’s especially unfair to the teams that sell a lot of season tickets (Packers, Patriots to name 2, though neither have had to give up a home game yet).

Go ahead and expand the regular season, eliminate 2 preseason games, and give everyone a neutral site game throughout the year. That’s a better plan in my mind.

This is Kroenke “paying” for relocation votes. I’m sure many owners would love the international exposure, i.e.Dallas, without forfeiting a home game.
He tried this a couple of years ago but the stadium authority in STL cited provisions in the lease that made him “reconsider”.
Now that the lease is a moot point, here he goes again.
Weasel. Is this the person the NFL wants to represent it in LA?

  28. mountaingirl39 says: Nov 25, 2015 10:24 AM

Thank goodness Ravens have stated in their contract that all home games are played at M&T Bank Stadium.

  29. pancaketaco says: Nov 25, 2015 10:27 AM

Watching a football game at 9:30 in the morning is way better than anything else I’d be watching on a Sunday morning. Even if its not that good a game… its a wonderful appetizer.

I hope they expand it to every other week… Berlin and Paris I’m looking at you!

  33. rcali says: Nov 25, 2015 10:33 AM

That’s a lot of revenue these cities are losing to another country, as well as, isolating the people west of the Rockies by the early start times. NFL does not care about it’s American fans and it’s becoming more obvious everyday. Why you would pay for a stadium for 7 games a year is beyond me.

  38. razzlejag says: Nov 25, 2015 10:43 AM

A comment on the Jags playing in London once a year- as a Jags ST holder, I am fine with it and I think a lot of our fans are, too. It is a big revenue boost, which we need, and it actually reduces our ST cost by 10%.

As the Jags get better, and it appears that they are, I may feel differently but for now it’s no big deal.

  39. dansardo says: Nov 25, 2015 10:44 AM

On the down side you have 5 crappy teams playing in London next year.

On the up side (for bengals fans) a 9:30 am start is about as far from prime time as you can get so they should actually win that game.

    Winners: Bengal fans.

Losers: All the rest of us including the poor people in London.

People that post on this message board are so narrow minded and insular. As a UK based NFL fan I love the international series and have been to every game since 2007. The NFL needs as a business to grow and has saturated the US market. It needs to new markets to diversify its fanbase and the international series are ways of bringing its product to new markets and growing the number of fans. Deal with it.

  42. countmahdrof says: Nov 25, 2015 10:59 AM

Ha. How’s it feel, Bengals, Jags and Rams season-ticket holders? Ready to fork out an extra grand or two to fly and stay in London? The NFL could care a whit about you because TV and merchandise make true fans obsolete. Every year, the game degrades a little more.

  43. jagtiger says: Nov 25, 2015 10:59 AM

I understand that the London are very profitable for the teams. More revenue than a home game. Maybe it’s the stadium size differences?

The NFL has lost the plot.

  47. granadafan says: Nov 25, 2015 11:14 AM

Some of the lousy reasons the NFL gives when they extort cities to gift the multi billionaires a free lavish stadium was that the cities would receive millions in tax revenue and they create thousands of jobs. Well, when the greedy NFL goes overseas, the cities lose out on that revenue. All those part-time minimum wage “jobs” (security, concessions) are lost on game day.

Cities would be better off recruiting companies to build high rises there where high paying office jobs are being generated and are used every day instead of only about 20 times per year.

  48. harrisonhits2 says: Nov 25, 2015 11:24 AM

  49. amishninjas says: Nov 25, 2015 11:30 AM

St Louis (The city that’s not allowed to vote on whether or not their tax dollars are used to build a stadium) is losing games at that stadium that was built using their money without their consent. This would be illegal in literally any other enterprise. If you wanted to build a McDonalds™ The city damn sure wouldn’t be funneling tax dollars to you to build it.

  58. dansardo says: Nov 25, 2015 12:28 PM

Everyone complaining about games being played outside the US just because they are being played outside the US need to get a life. A very small % of any fanbase actually go to their team’s games every year so complaining about the hardship is laughable. And for you that just have an issue about games being played outside the US for whatever reason you are trying to come up with, please go ahead and seek therapy, why in the hell would you care?

The ONLY reason to have a problem with this for the VAST majority of fans of the game is that these games are almost always crap games against crap teams and we are going to watch it anyway because its football. Normally, when you want to watch football, you usually only have to settle watching team’s like the colts or the jags if you are in their media area and that means you are probably a fan of the crap team to begin with.

  59. whodeylifer says: Nov 25, 2015 12:34 PM

The NFL just needs to bring back NFL Europa maybe rebranded or something. Instead of 10 teams maybe 12 so there could be 4 div of 3 teams each? Because as an NFL Fan for 30+ years, i do not want to see my team lose a home game (thus my city looses out on a lot of revenue, not to mention i don’t get to go bc it’s across the pond) so we can send sample sizes of “The NFL” to our neighbors on the other side.
They had NFL Europa and it didn’t do well as a spring league with only 3 teams out of the 10 being from Europe.
I think they need to work within their own country, instead of trying to have 7 NFL teams trying to co-ordinate the logistics of it all, just have all 10 teams be from Europe.

  60. jm91rs says: Nov 25, 2015 12:42 PM

I don’t have a problem with games being played in Europe. I do have a problem with taking home games from a publicly financed stadium in a place like Cincinnati (Hamilton county owes hundreds of millions on Paul Brown Stadium). There’s certainly some value in having Londoners hear about the city of Cincinnati, but I doubt that financially it’s the best thing for the county to have the stadium empty when it’s really only used for 8 games a year (not counting preseason BS).

  61. thermanmerman99 says: Nov 25, 2015 12:48 PM

Oh no! The NFL is taking away the jaguar superbowl game next year against Indianapolis. The only game each year the jays and their fans get up for. Whenever the jays beat the Colts at home, they drop confetti and celebrate like they won the superbowl. Surprised they don’t have a downtown parade planned for the week after the Colts home game this year if they happen to win

  62. whodatnhollywood says: Nov 25, 2015 12:52 PM

Yet, they want American taxpayers in cities like San Diego, Oakland, St. Louis and more to fund the stadiums, then GIVE AWAY games to London. Give me a FREAKIN’ BREAK!!! That’s a bunch of BS!!!

    STOP EXPORTING OUR GAMES!!!!

  63. jchipwood says: Nov 25, 2015 12:53 PM

But of course the Patriots are on that side already being Kraft and Goodell are besties.

I am a Jag fan….I understand the reason for it, but I don’t have to really like it.

In 2016, we lose the Colts v Jags home game. For comparison, do you think City or United fans would “deal with it” if either Manchester Derby were played in New York?????

  66. whodey83 says: Nov 25, 2015 1:32 PM

  67. radrntn says: Nov 25, 2015 1:44 PM

there are more people in Mexico City than the city of New York. Have The Cowboys play the Raiders and you have a guaranteed sell out at Azteca stadium with over 100k in attendance.

I would much rather see a game there at a normal time rather than have the Raiders getting up at 2am pst to get to game. I mean the 10am PST on the east coast requires the players get up at 5am after flying in the day before.

To even it out lets have east coast teams play at 8:30pm on the west coast. We could have Sunday night double headers…..Just move the current 5:30 sunday night game to 5pm….It’s only fair.

And while they have a base in Europe, they can’t even field 32 decent teams here in the US on any given Sunday. Some of the games and teams right now absolutely suck.
