Ravens place veteran defensive end Chris Canty on IR, their 18th

The Ravens don’t have a lot to play for, so they’re going to look at new parts for the future.

That extends beyond the addition of quarterback Ryan Mallett.

The team announced they had placed veteran defensive end Chris Canty on season-ending injured reserve with a pectoral tear, and waived quarterback Bryn Renner and return man Raheem Mostert.

To fill those three roster spots, the Ravens signed Mallett, and promoted running back Terrence McGee and cornerback Jumal Rolle from their practice squad.

Canty is the 18th player to go on IR for the Ravens this year, which is part of the reason they’re clearing the decks and securing young players for the future now. That outlandish number includes many of their top players, including quarterback Joe Flacco, wide receiver Steve Smith and outside linebacker Terrell Suggs.
