Aaron Donald wins NFC defensive player of the week award

Last week, Lions coach Jim Caldwell defended the decision to use the 10th pick in the 2014 draft on tight end Eric Ebron and not on defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

Caldwell may feel differently after facing Donald.

The former Pitt standout, possibly motivated by the mere suggestion that Ebron was more worthy at a time when Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley were a year away from leaving, played well enough against Caldwell’s Lions to become the NFC defensive player of the week.

Donald, who had three sacks on Sunday and now has 11 for the season, also won the award in Week One, against the Seahawks. He provides hope for a team that has plenty of great players -- and that arguably is one competent quarterback away from becoming a serious contender in the conference.
