In the wake of losing running back Marcus Murphy to injured reserve, the New Orleans Saints once again looked to free agency for additional backfield help.

The Saints signed former San Francisco 49ers running back Kendall Hunter on Wednesday.

In addition, the team promoted fullback Toben Opurum from their practice squad, signed defensive back Tony Carter and placed defensive back Damian Swann on injured reserve.

Hunter missed the entire 2014 season after suffering a torn ACL. He appeared in two games this preseason for San Francisco - carrying 17 times for 36 yards - before again being placed on injured reserve. The 49ers gave Hunter an injury settlement and released him, which allowed him to sign with a team this season.

Hunter was a productive second option for the 49ers from 2011-2013 behind Frank Gore. Hunter has 1,202 yards on 262 carries and seven touchdowns in 43 career games. He also has 27 catches for 268 yards.

Carter appeared in three games for the Indianapolis Colts this season. He spent the previous four years with the Denver Broncos.
