Was Beckham provoked by anti-gay slurs?

cD05ODdlNmNhY2MwMjRlZWQzNTJhM2ViYTQ1Y2VlY2YzOCZnPTJlMDFhODc1ZDMzYWZhMzUxMGE0YzZjYTE1ZmUwMzlk AP

The notion that Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who went after Panthers cornerback Josh Norman repeatedly on Sunday, was provoked by the presence of a baseball bat on the field before the game is laughable. Another potential explanation that emerged on Monday is far more serious.

Ian O’Connor of ESPN.com reported on Monday that Giants players “heard Panthers defensive players direct anti-gay slurs and expletives at Beckham before the game,” which is believed to have set the confrontational tone of the game.

In an appearance with Stephen A. Smith of SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio, Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders corroborated the notion that Panthers players hurled personal insults at Beckham.

“Then you start talking about his hairstyle,” Sanders said. “Then you start talking about his sexuality. So now when you’re talking about things like that of that nature, it goes way off the field into something because now this is personal.”

Flashes of homophobia emerged after the game. Said Panthers cornerback Cortland Finnegan, via Black & Blue Review: “Maybe it’s in his blood. Maybe it’s female-related.” Likewise, Norman called Beckham a “bitch” and a “ballerina.”

“You’re going to be Michael Jackson and go around and dancing and playing and a lot of other stuff and not be a football player and not train the way you’re supposed to train,” Norman said. “It goes to show. I hope I pulled that mask off. I pulled back the face of what that dude really is.”

If guys like Finnegan and Norman are willing to offer up such thinly-veiled assessments of femininity and sexuality when talking publicly about Beckham, would it be a shock to learn they used anti-gay slurs toward Beckham when they thought their words weren’t being recorded?

Given the number of cameras and microphones present on and around a football field before, during, and after a game, the NFL should fully investigate whether and to what extent slurs were directed to Beckham. While it doesn’t begin to excuse Beckham’s behavior, the NFL should want to know if things like this are happening — and the NFL should be taking meaningful steps to eradicate it from the game.

It wouldn’t be a shock and it wouldn’t be a big deal either. Doubt it was the first time someone called Beckham an [anti-gay slur]. Lol, if the shoe fits. It certainly doesn’t justify Beckham’s violent hissy-fits.

  9. kissmyconverse says: Dec 22, 2015 12:11 AM

    Maybe… Just maybe….

Norman called OBJ a bitch because he was acting like one?

And MAYBE just MAYBE the Diva (Or is that going to be considered a thinly veiled slur?) can’t take responsibility for his actions and is using the Media and the NFL to protect the image of their golden boy?

I have no clue what Josh said to OBJ, and I am one of the the biggest supporters of LGBT rights, but whatever he said to him worked to get him off his game. And THAT is on OBJ.

Or you know we can just keep making excuses for the kid and try to pull the look over here game.

…Seriously? It’s a bunch of men in their 20s or early 30s at most, beating the snot out of each other for 3 hours.
Nasty stuff is said nearly every play. Stop drumming up new theories every few hours to try and explain what is simply nothing more than an immature young player crossing the line by launching himself at someone’s head and not knowing when to stop throwing shots until it was too late.
This isn’t youth soccer or golf for crying out loud. If the NFL spends more than 8 seconds “investigating” if mean things were said to Beckham then they are an even bigger joke than I ever thought possible.
    Give me a break.

  15. Damidwesterner says: Dec 22, 2015 12:15 AM

I say all of this just feeds the flames that the DBs and other D-players on teams that will be facing OBJ in the future. If he can’t handle what was thrown at him by the Panthers, just wait until he faces a team that can really trash-talk.
I remember when the stories came out that some players called Jerry Rice ‘Fifi’ when he had that perm. And it was said he hated it. But it didn’t let that get to him, other than take it out on the other team via a monster performance.

  16. dhandevidt says: Dec 22, 2015 12:17 AM

Woah whoa whoa hold the phone… The panthers players can dance around after TDs every time but OBJ does it he’s a Michael Jackson wanna be and b*tch and ballerina? I also think what OBJ did was very uncalled for and deserves the suspension.

  17. joeclutch16 says: Dec 22, 2015 12:17 AM

Unless OBJ is gay and comes out, I doubt the incompetent NFL will punish norman like the NBA did to rondo.

  18. playsanity says: Dec 22, 2015 12:17 AM

  24. buffalowned says: Dec 22, 2015 12:27 AM

All of OBJ’s whining is a sad ploy to make him look like the victim. He needs to man up, accept the punishment that the refs wouldn’t give him, and move on. He’s just continuing to embarrass himself.

  25. beastmode5150 says: Dec 22, 2015 12:27 AM

These panthers sure are full of themselves. Pretty crazy for a team that literally has done nothing that anyone will remember. Can they? Sure, but they haven’t yet. What a bunch of selfish and offensive punks.

Is this the same Josh Norman who slapped off Cam Newton’s helmet and took his franchise QB to the ground in training camp 4 months ago… Nah couldn’t be..

  28. xviixxiixxvi says: Dec 22, 2015 12:30 AM

Oh yes, we must make sure grown men don’t say mean things to one another.

  29. terminalmancer says: Dec 22, 2015 12:31 AM

You can’t justify trying to give someone else a head injury, but if this were true, it would certainly make OBJ’s behavior a lot easier to understand. It would also lose the Panthers a lot of respect in my eyes.

  30. dylanburnett says: Dec 22, 2015 12:33 AM

Maybe he should just say “yeah, call me names all you want, but look what I’m doing to your team on the field” instead of throwing punches and blindsiding his opponents.

    Sticks and stones, OBJ.

  31. skinsprinting says: Dec 22, 2015 12:34 AM

Not an excuse for Beckham’s actions all !

But you do have to wonder if all of the “hot dogging ” and “showboating” that the Panthers do is going to come back to haunt them? Say in the playoffs where they will be facing better teams than the Giants.
You just do not see championship teams act like that.

  32. angelogiaquinto18 says: Dec 22, 2015 12:35 AM

Cortland Finnegan and trouble…no way! If this is true then Norman and Finnegan should be suspended for playoff game #1. It’s pretty obvious by their comments this may be valid.

  33. jolink653 says: Dec 22, 2015 12:35 AM

Just stop it with this nonsense. Oooh, they may have called him a few nasty names. That gives him justification to ram the crown of his helmet into Norman’s head on a blindside hit? He could have put either Norman or himself in the hospital with that

Instead of getting angry and getting violent, he could have ignored it, like most mature people would have done, not giving them the satisfaction of knowing they got in his head. He could have gone out to win the game. Instead he opted to melt down and now got himself suspended for a must-win game where his team needs him most. Pathetic on his part, but don’t make excuses for him, especially pathetic ones like they may have called him names. Just stop

  34. briang123 says: Dec 22, 2015 12:37 AM

  37. mataug says: Dec 22, 2015 12:42 AM

putting the toothpaste back into the tube, are we ?

The refs could have nipped this in the bud pretty easily by kicking out both OBJ & Norman who were trash throughout the game but a NY team’s playoff bid was on the line.

Also, thankful that Al & Cris will not spend 1/2 hour discussing OBJ’s pre-game routine on Sunday night while the Giants are getting spanked by an opponent, find that remarkable those 2 discuss that instead!

  38. dlhouse18 says: Dec 22, 2015 12:43 AM

Unless someone degraded your deceased loved one or said something racial, you really have no business reacting that way, and even then you could beat them on the field like a grown man.

Giant’s PR team is really trying to earn those paychecks.

  46. stealthjunk says: Dec 22, 2015 12:56 AM

How did the Steelers’ OL (Wallace) not get suspended for running full speed after the play and putting a cheap helmet-to-helmet shot right to the head of the Broncos’ Bruton when he was just standing there? Bruton was lucky to escape without a concussion, but Wallace should have been ejected immediately. And if not, he should be suspended from next week’s game. There’s no place for that kind of garbage. The NFL needs to be consistent.

I guess they realized that the bat thing didn’t really make sense. Had to back it with some other reason.

If anything Beckham should of shown them up with his play so he could say they got beat by an [anti-gay slur]. Making them seem worse, at this point the Giants and OBJ are looking worse and worse the more they try to justify it.

Not to excuse Normans cheap shots either.

  50. balt88 says: Dec 22, 2015 1:03 AM

  53. pantherfan1973299 says: Dec 22, 2015 1:08 AM

Well this is all nonsense, but I am starting to feel like I’m pulling for the bad guys, lol. C’mon, Norman can be a jack ass, always been that way, but his play can back it up. Can has always been this way too, he has always been brash, ( and he’s always thrown the towel on his head, winning or losing) and I have never seen a football player smiling DURING a play until I saw him do it. Look, I can see why you’d hate them from the outside looking in, but they are actually a class bunch, take my word for it………..I didn’t even make a dent did I?

  54. cashindubz says: Dec 22, 2015 1:14 AM

Not sure what kind of dudes you hang out with, but if any man that could handle a punch taunted me, or any of the other men I know, the way Beckham was, that guy would receive a serious butt kicking and screw the consequences. Anger skews judgement in the heat of the moment. I can relate to what happened to him on Sunday. There’s a lot of people who are in jails that also lost their heads in similar situations. He may be guilty, but it is understandable why he did what he did.

Can you say you might not have reacted the same? Put his shoes on and think about it.

Ok, OBJ is suspended. Where are the fines or suspensions on Coughlin, the refs, the dude in NY, etc. ? Lots of people failed to do their jobs here and both players warranted ejection. NFL=money train. With a commish as an engineer, coaches as conducters, certain media bell hops and players as yard workers. And the owners own it all. This is just getting ridiculous

  74. xpensivewinos says: Dec 22, 2015 2:52 AM

Defending it and explaining why it happened are two very different things.

I’m not defending it and Beckham did not handle himself in a professional manner at many times during that game, but I’m fairly certain he doesn’t have a mental illness, so he didn’t act out like that repeatedly for no reason.

Right, wrong or indifferent, he felt he had to defend himself. He snapped, but he was not the aggressor and there are definitely reasons why it happened time and time again. Shouldn’t the NFL find out why?

P.S. Does anyone in the NFL dance more than Cam Newton? Just saying’………

I heard Deions interview, they claim that a practice squad player in black approached Beckham with a bat, during pregame and said they were going to end his career; take out his legs etc.. Then of course they were questioning his sexuality throughout the game, and of course looks like it continued after the game… I think Beckham had a right to be upset, but as soon as he launched himself at Normans head, Beckham went too far.. I am still a fan of his, but if Norman was paralyzed or even Beckham for that matter they both would have been regretting this whole episode of crap.. I am for a suspension, I would rather him learn now, while he is still young in a losing season where it looks like we are not going anywhere.

Also by the way , I think it was Daniel Jeremiah said if you focused strictly on the match up of Beckham and Norman, Beckham had beat Norman 6 times over the top when they were matched up against each other..So in closing Josh Norman sucks, and his whole game looks like is about talking trash.. So if your team signs him as a FA prepare to be disappointed.

There’s a guy on Carolina who does the same thing…he’s being considered for MVP this year. What’s his name again? Is he gay too? Maybe he is. Beckham is just as valuable imo. Beckam clearly won the on field battle beating Norman on the dropped sure-td pass in Q1 and owning him in the 4rth quarter as well. Beckham needs to rise above these lesser talents who resort to name calling to get under his skin.

  84. saveme321 says: Dec 22, 2015 4:28 AM

I agree that he was wrong for his actions. At the end of the day, football is a job though. He was unprofessional but at the same time, no one wants to hear those type of immature comments. It’s ok to trash talk but sometimes you can go to far with it. Everyone has limits and after a while things build up. No one knows every detail only what we saw. We can’t always act high and mighty because I’m sure every person has snapped at someone. If Cam Newton had it out for the guy during training camp, I’m sure is a guy who just doesn’t shut up. Julio Jones is a quiet guy but Norman tried to get under him as well but Julio didn’t get as physical. ODB hears a lot more because of his spotlight at the moment and the stage he’s own and some players target guys like that but sometimes you can have enough, example Finnegan and Andre Johnson.

In all honesty, who cares. Bryant Young, who was a very religious high-character guy, was once ejected for shoving Kyle Turley after he called him the “N” word.

The niners didn’t act like a bunch of bratty entitled kids the way Beckham’s backers are acting. Somebody started it by pushing the button, but you’ve got to own up to your own actions.

Josh Norman & Courtland Finnigan are a couple of tools but all OBJ’s actions did was prove them right. Get under his skin & he’ll cry like a little girl.

The NFL will not investigate this because:
    A) It’s a stupid waste of time & money
    B) It has nothing to do with the Pats

Players say stuff about each other and say things about yo momma all the time. Drop a few TDs on them to shut them up. Odell was just the guy to do it too. Instead, they got in his head, which is what they wanted, and it worked. Once Odell focused, he made the Panthers look average. If Odell could have stayed focused the whole game he could have put up a few more TDs, and twice as much yardage.

Cortland Finnegan is a piece of trash, there is no surprise there, I thought Norman was better than that, but it looks like he is garbage too.

  101. rams1999 says: Dec 22, 2015 6:44 AM

But Beckham is now just playing victim or should just come out openly as gay. His actions were wrong but I think the public would be more understanding if he admitted the slurs were what caused his behavior being a gay man.

I don’t think Norman or whom ever needs to be suspended. Probably a fine and a psa like the NBA did Kobe.

Enough photo and video evidence has emerged showing a Panther walking around warm-ups brandishing (yes..brandishing, he isn’t just carrying it) a baseball bat and pointing it at Beckham while jawing at him. That’s “laughable”? Really? This is the type of image the NFL wants to promote? Mike Florio you got that wrong. 134. midenginerearwheeldrive says: Dec 22, 2015 9:30 AM

This whole thing makes me puke.

    – Can’t say anything about OBJ that hasn’t already been said. He’s childish and deserves a larger punishment.

    – We can all agree that refs were complicit in this. They really crapped the bed.

    – Coughlin has been ‘fired’ every season for the last 5 years. He assured that is happening on ‘Black Monday’ after this season. His ‘I saw nothing’ responses are embarrassing. He should have removed his player from the game if the refs couldn’t be bother. Guys get ‘game benched’ for fumbling or missing a block. OBJs actions generated many penalties that cost his team a game they HAD to win to preserve division/playoff hopes.

    – If OBJ was a d-bag on at an 11, then Norman was a d-bag at a 6. I hated the behavior of BOTH players. It’s nonsense. Even before this game, we see all this bragging/dancing/nonsense crap from the Panthers. I hate all this DMX ‘Y’all gon’ make me lose my mind’ crap in football today – the posturing and the ‘I’m badder than you’ crap – the marriage of hip hop and sports, I guess. Be like Walter Payton – work hard, have fun, laugh a bit with your teammates and opponents and let it show on the field. Or like Barry Sanders. Let your play do the talking and hand the ball to the ref after you score. For every OBJ and Josh Norman, I wish there were 100 Russell Wilsons and Ben Watsons.
And no, this isn’t a racial thing. I hated it when d bags like Jeremy Shockey did it.

    – Then again, Chico is the Panthers coach. He was part of my beloved ’85 Bears who probably started all this crap with the Super Bowl Shuffle.

That said, I still want the Panthers to run the table. Not because I like them, but because I want to see Mercury ’14 Game Season’ Morris go away.

However, he said ‘watch the all 22’. He said it paints a bigger picture. He did not have kind words for Carolina. He didn’t excuse OBJ in any form but he was clear that Carolina is not the innocent puppy. He said, in watching the all 22 of Carolina’s games this year, he’s counted at least 20 incidents of taunting, nonsense and trash.

Again, doesn’t excuse what OBJ did, but just reinforces my dislike of the Panthers overall ‘mojo’.

Bummer because that team features Thomas Davis – the reigning Walter Payton Man of the Year winner, Jared Allen (a goofball, but a very funny and seemingly good dude) and a Peanut Tillman. Arguably the best ‘good guy’ in football. Combine those factors, and thats straight bully behavior. When you back a man into a corner with threats, taunts, and otherwise, sometimes they will react. It certainly doesnt excuse his behavior, however it certainly gives a little explanation. You can condemn what Beckham did, along with condemning what the Panthers players did. Those saying “get over it”, “deal with it”, dont be complicit in condoning bullying, stand against it! be a man yourself! its not about being “PC”, its about being mature, having class and self pride, and treating others how you want to be treated. That player was yelling and pointing the bat at the Giants as they are running on the field no place for that in the game. But to think Norman was innocent in all of this is ridiculous, he got what he deserved. Taunting with a baseball bat, saying they were going to take out his knees and end his career, the gay slurs- I would have snapped and played over aggressive too.

The fact that his own QB beat his ass in preseason tells you all you really need to know about Norman. He was over the top with Cam, his own QB in practice and paid the price. Obviously he doesn’t learn. I am sure he will be at it again with Julio this weekend.

The NFL needs to strictly police the on field language of its mostly black players by its mostly white refs, owners and commish. (Sarcasm)

Y.A. Tittle is rolling over in his grave.

    Y.A. Tittle is still alive.

Of Course. How else do you expect him to be turning over in his grave? You might want to get him out of there though.

Great display of your moral compass people. All of the hate talk on this board shows what great role models most of you must be. The sad part is a lot of you have kids and they will grow up to be just like you- another generation of intolerance and hate.

  163. LA_Panther says: Dec 22, 2015 1:22 PM

I find this narrative that the panthers are bullies rather comical.

The bat theory didn’t stick, now it is “oh, they called me a gay slur, so I had no choice but to try and break Norman’s neck away from the play a couple of hours later”. What’s next, the winter solstice caused Beckham to drop a touchdown? Seriously man. Giants PR is reaching … Just cut your losses, apologize and move on

What’s happening to this sport? You really wanna go there NFL? Why don’t you mic up everyone and see how many insults you can record? Good luck with that.

This actually is not good for Beckham. He’s putting a target on his back with this fiasco. Defenses all around the league are now going to look at him as soft, and will light him up if he keeps acting like this. He needs to nip this in the bud, take his punishment and hope this story goes away asap

  164. terminatahx says: Dec 22, 2015 1:32 PM

Lets focus on so called gay slurs and completmy ignore Beckham’s dangerous cheapshots and tantrums……

  165. sueb45 says: Dec 22, 2015 3:15 PM

Whenever things get reported after the fact — in this case after a suspension has been given…..it sounds like a kid with cookie crumbs on his mouth saying “I didn’t take a cookie….besides Josh MADE me do it!!!”……as we all know from being the kid and the parent….that never works. Worst of all, now every team knows how to get to Beckham, a few well-timed insults and boom, you get 15 yards for your team. If other teams or players have been systematically harassing Beckham with slurs, a la Incognito to Martin, something should be done; but, don’t wait until you’ve done something stupid to play that card.

Beckham deserves to be suspended that play was dirty and an intent to injure. The name calling grow up stop being a baby and prove them wrong.

However, there is no place in football to have a baseball bat on the field. There is no symbolism to it. To say its because we are homerun hitters that a load of crap. The video I saw with a Panthers player with a bat in hand pointing at the Giants sideline is absolute nonsense. That player was yelling and pointing the bat at the Giants as they are running on the field no place for that in the game. That is threatening and with a bat in hand could be considered criminal threatening.

I could just imagine what you all would be saying if that was the Patriots doing it.

You’re a hypocrite if you are defending this action.

I am a Pats fan and I am defending this action. I do not believe I am a hypocrite. This was not the first game that the Panthers brought the bat out onto the field during practice. No one, including the Giants had a problem with it. If the Giants or any one of their players had a problem with it, it should have been brought to the refs attention…BEFORE the game, not afterward–when there were consequences for Beckham’s tantrums during the game.

Gay slurs still aren’t a crime by the way.

  168. shooter28 says: Dec 22, 2015 3:37 PM

Whats funny is Norman is Either Gay or Bi-Sexual Himself. He is probably seriously struggling with that in his own mind and that’s why he hurles these insults out.

in College my friend Brendon used to Suck Josh Norman off all THE TIME !!!! This isn’t just talk either , this really happened , multiple times

  169. tommyribs says: Dec 22, 2015 4:19 PM

Would people have been as upset if the Panthers had Lacrosse Sicks or Cricket Bats? Probably not…

And that says it all to me.

Some of you still don’t get it. At least fifteen comments on here that say (in different manners) “If the anti-gay slurs offended him then there must be some truth about it”. If OBJ is gay then those slurs become even worse, which could be construed as a crime- so if he is gay then Norman, Finnegan and the other Carolina Bullies should be suspended for the year.

    _______

So wait, calling someone an ‘anti-gay’ slur is a CRIME? Is that really a world you want to be living in?

Is that REALLY a slope you want to start down? I’ve determined that the screen name ‘johnny ballsack’ is offensive because I lost mine in a planking accident. As such, I find it to be offensive and that slur should be a crime.

  171. guadalahonky says: Dec 22, 2015 6:12 PM

Nothing justifies the six incidents the league office has found. I put this on Coughlin for not pulling Beckham and his fragile egg shell mind out of the game.

  172. Angry Orange Man says: Dec 22, 2015 6:12 PM

Wait, so dancing when you score a TD means you’re gay? So then WR is a position held down exclusively by gay men if we use that logic.

Okay- a crime may have been a little harsh but it would make it more severe bullying (is that better?). BTW I gave your comment a thumbs up, very funny.

  174. jim699 says: Dec 22, 2015 7:17 PM

Wow just wow. It’s not like it’s 1983 and no one can figure out that a leather clad Rob Halford is gay. If you hadn’t already figured that OBJ was gay, than you are embarassingly clueless.

  175. drswaggletooth says: Dec 22, 2015 9:04 PM

All the hate, look Beckham was clearly punched in the head right before the helmet to helmet, there is no clear evidence that he way attempting helmet to helmet contact. Then he got kneed very hardly in the head by Norman, and then punched a second time in the head…he should not have retaliated but two or three folks plus Beckham could have been ejected on that play.

  176. thebirdofprey says: Dec 22, 2015 9:37 PM

This does remind me when Andre Johnson gave Cortland Finnegan a full-out beat down on the field for his dirty play over the years.

NFL did nothing and everyone who ever watched football saw it as Finnegan’s comeuppance.

  177. robmix8 says: Dec 23, 2015 3:02 PM

didn’t he have issues with the GIANTS earlier when some people thought he was too soft ?

  178. bengalskuta82 says: Dec 23, 2015 3:33 PM

  179. vailskier99 says: Dec 24, 2015 12:49 PM

Didn’t realize OBJ is a gay man. Always thought his hairstyle is weird, but I thought he was just a punk.
