Firing Jason Garrett would cost Jerry Jones up to $24 million

With the Cowboys sliding to 4-11 and owner Jerry Jones not too long ago calling out the coaching staff for not winning enough games with quarterback Tony Romo out, some are now wondering whether Jones will fire Jason Garrett. Jones can do whatever he wants, but it wouldn’t be cheap to move on from Garrett.

As a free agent a year ago (technically), Garrett landed a five-year, $30 million contract to remain on the job. With four years left, the buyout for firing Garrett would be up to $24 million.

Jones and the Cowboys would get credit for any money Garrett earns elsewhere in coaching (and possibly in broadcasting). Alternatively, Garrett could make $6 million a year for four years to do not a damn thing.

The other reality for the Cowboys is that Jones and Garrett work well together, in that Jones wants to claim credit and otherwise pop off and Garrett doesn’t care about any of that. A new coach may not be as compliant as Garrett, making it harder for Jones to portray himself as the primary chef instead of sidecar passenger to a Jimmy Johnson or a Bill Parcells.

God love Jerry and his shrewd moves as GM.
Next on the list sign Johnny Manziel and add another tent to the circus

  2. spiffybiff says: Dec 27, 2015 4:38 PM

At this stage in romos career I don’t see why you bring in a guy a with a different offensive system either. You just need a better backup and take a more serious approach to the running back position

  3. thegenghiskahn88 says: Dec 27, 2015 4:39 PM

Just hire a gm or let Stephen make the football decisions. Jerrah needs to just sign the checks and go somewhere.

  4. dansardo says: Dec 27, 2015 4:57 PM

Garrett probably suck but how can you really evaluate him properly given he works for one of the worst gm’s in the history of the nfl

  5. joetoronto says: Dec 27, 2015 5:05 PM

It’s time to blow it up but Jerrah won’t, he’ll go into next season delusional yet again, thinking Romo is going to last.

  6. thefatlazygamer says: Dec 27, 2015 5:05 PM

Them losing isn’t on Garrett. If Romo wasn’t hurt multiple times, I suspect the Cowboys would have a better record.

  7. nflrule says: Dec 27, 2015 5:07 PM

Garrett isn’t going anywhere. He is paid 6 million a year to clap on the sidelines like a trained seal…

  8. wedemboyz88 says: Dec 27, 2015 5:09 PM

Jerry won’t fire Jason. He needs to let Stephen be the GM and he can just be the spokesperson like he likes to be. Just put this year behind us, move on, and hope for a better, healthier season next year. That’s all we can do at this point.

  9. jaxairsupport says: Dec 27, 2015 5:13 PM

If the team was half as talented as billed they would have won a few games without Romo. The biggest issue I’ve seen is the play calling

But maybe look at a backup Qb with good bones and an arm.

  10. gintra44 says: Dec 27, 2015 5:17 PM

garrett is such a no talent hack. but jerruh has a history of hiring (compliant is key) no talent hacks save johnson and parcells.

“At this stage in romos career I don’t see why you bring in a guy a with a different offensive system either.”

At this point in Romo’s career, I don’t see why you don’t start looking for another quarterback.

    RGIII coming to Dallas.

  13. usmutts says: Dec 27, 2015 5:19 PM

It seems to me that Garrett’s head coaching career ends in Dallas. Unlike Jimmy Johnson, Garrett has shown no personal pride or self respect. He’s allowed himself to be emasculated, a kind of coaching eunuch. Who would hire him now?

  14. lingsun54 says: Dec 27, 2015 5:27 PM

Garrett is a puppet anyway. It’s hard to find a good coach who would want a job in the worst way.

  15. voidhelix says: Dec 27, 2015 5:30 PM

The EASY thing to do here, is to have a knee jerk reaction and re-set. I think that would be a mistake. The major coaches should all get one more year. Some of the other coaches ( Henderson, Pope) should be fired though. Healthier offense, plus more talent, equates to a playoff team next year.

    Worth. Every. Damn. Penny.

  17. cowboyfan45 says: Dec 27, 2015 5:36 PM

garret couldn’t get a job in the booth, let alone another head coaching job

  18. 44mpo says: Dec 27, 2015 6:04 PM

Please, leave the Cowboys be. They are right on the verge of greatness.

    Signed 31 NFL teams

  19. cboys4life2014 says: Dec 27, 2015 6:05 PM

Say what you want about Garrett but it wasn’t him who signed Brandon Weeden as a backup QB. Any team in the NFL who lost their #1 receiver for 5 weeks then lost their starting QB a week later for 8 weeks the very next week then lost their starting QB again for the season after playing only 2 games wouldn’t be much better off than Dallas is but of course why point that out when you can use every opportunity to once again question Garrett’s job security. It’s the same garbage the media (especially on here) has been pumping out since Garrett took over as HC. Clearly changes need to be made in some areas but to once again immediately attack Garrett and even Jerry Jones given the circumstances this season I think are a little premature. If it was me I’d wait until he had a bad season as HC with a healthy team before calling for his head. It ain’t like he was given control over building the team to his liking and he completely tore it apart and replaced talent with garbage like Chip did. If any NFC east HC should be worried about their job it should be Chip Kelly. Besides we all know if Jerry did eat the $24 mil. and fire him he’d be questioned for that too by the same people saying Garrett sucks right now.

  20. nnagi says: Dec 27, 2015 6:11 PM

The cynics all act like parcells wa a great coach when he was in Dallas, the dude went 34-30 and lost a playoff game and then tried to extort a huge raise for mediocre efforts

  21. thetruth75 says: Dec 27, 2015 6:17 PM

How anybody defends Jason Garrett is beyond me. What exactly has he done that suggests he is a good coach?

But as long as fans are dumb Jerry Jones gets to play GM and pay the bills. Only way to make him go away is to not go to the games and not make excuses. But I digress as the sheep will follow to slaughter.

  22. frankfortschooldropout says: Dec 27, 2015 6:29 PM

    All this Jerry talk.

So Jerry said he was the only one who wanted to draft Manziel over Martin in an interview recently. Undisputed fact.

10 years ago Manziel would have been drafted, no questions asked or allowed. But that’s simply not the way it’s done in Dallas anymore. Jerry has already given up the overall control and it’s only partly Stephen. Perhaps Stephen makes many decisions and perhaps Jerry is part of them, however he doesn’t exercise veto power anymore and McClay is a huge part of their draft and other roster makeup. Tired memes and narratives sound cute to the uninformed, but it doesn’t make them true.

  23. larams29 says: Dec 27, 2015 6:34 PM

Jason Garrett is not a head coach. He’s a cheerleader with a headset. All play calling responsibilities are on both coordinators unless Jerry has a headset in the suite. Wouldn’t surprise me.

  24. maverick2560 says: Dec 27, 2015 6:49 PM

If,I am Jerry Jones I am more concerned about the defense. They
cannot stop the run….see Packers game…..they are not strong against
the pass. In the last 4 games they have given up way too many third
and over 10 yard plays for big yardage. Other teams use third and over 10 as a turnover opportunity ….the Cowboys play a prevent. The prevent is under 50 percent. Their pass rush is non- existent They
need to make a decision ..do they’ want to stop the run or employ
D- ware like lineman ….good every once in a while against the pass..
but not so good against the run.

  25. jymoney1 says: Dec 27, 2015 7:10 PM

If you can put up 24-30 puts a game your defense looks a lot better
A team like the Giants have a shot in any game because they can score points against any team, ya there defense sucks but they still have a chance in every game. Not this Cowboys team, they did last year they could score on anyone and made the defense better. Tough to win games when you can’t even score a touchdown in 4 games

  26. dallasgoon says: Dec 27, 2015 7:25 PM

Dallas is the only team this season that hasn’t scored 30 or more in ANY game.

As far as Garrett goes, fire him and eat the money. If you hire a coach with a clue and start winning, you’ll get the money right back. Sure, you’ll make Garrett a rich(er) fool, but he already has millions anyway. He’s done enough damage to the team, fans, and the careers of players who have the painful burden of being coached by him.

  27. howleyesque says: Dec 27, 2015 8:00 PM

Garrett has been a joke from the outset and last year was deceptive. He and Kelly each built HALF of an offense. Kelly focused on the skill positions and over looked the Oline. Garrett built the Oline and only NOW that they’re using these last games as a preamble to next year’s preseason has he “discovered” Moore and Butler!

As to firing him, unless JJ can hire Sean Payton to replace him I don’t see it happening.

  28. jymoney1 says: Dec 27, 2015 8:05 PM

I love to hear the coaches pre game speech before next weeks game
How is he going to motivate these guys to play? I love how the joneses talk about how they are focused on Washington, are you kidding me?
They act like they are trying to win so people will show up to statism, than the won’t play any starters, bet there are some cheap seats for next weeks game.

    ******************************************
Brandon Weeden just did something he couldn’t do with the Cowboys, he won as QB of HOU and HOU has less offensive talent than DAL.

For the record, I like all of DALs coaches even Garrett. He was, at one time, the HOTTEST offensive coordinator in the league (just ask BAL). Except for not drafting a RB and not developing a QB for the future, we had solid drafts the last several years (Will McClay). The problem here squarely falls on the Owner/pseudo-GM. Murray, McFadden, Hardy, Weeden, and Cassell are all his influence. He is an embarrassment to this once great franchise. Tom Landry and Tex Schramm are turning over in their graves as the curse of Jimmy Johnson lives on!!!

  30. rajbais says: Dec 27, 2015 8:36 PM

It’s not that those two work well together. The reality is that Jerry Jones overpays people that he likes personally and enables them.

    And then they do nothing.

  31. jymoney1 says: Dec 27, 2015 8:41 PM

I forgot patriots went 11-5 with Matt castell as
    their quarterback
Look around the league backup quarterbacks are winning everywhere but Dallas. Garret was a hot commodity what do you think he would get if Jerry fired him next week.
So basically he can’t win without a top ten quarterback, some coach

  32. sergeant2 says: Dec 27, 2015 10:03 PM

Garrett is to Jones, what Reinfield was to Count Dracula. Jones might reassign his loyal manservant to a front office job, and Garrett would be grateful that his master was kind enough to allow him to continue to worship Count Jerruh.

  33. maverick2560 says: Dec 27, 2015 10:33 PM

Sorry for the second comment but if you think Garrett wanted to play
Cassel your crazy. Cassell has no arm …it was obvious from start.
Yes ..the offense was bad….but the defense could not stop anyone when it counted. You win Super Bowls with Defense ….you win with defenses that stop the run and make teams convert 3rd and longer
yards. When teams have 3rd and over 10-12 you look for turnovers.
Look at the Cowboys turnovers in the last two years…..playing vanilla
defense does not create turnovers. It also leads to losses after the league figures you out.

Make him the OC and bring in a coach with cojones. JJ needs to retire to Florida.

  35. saltedjim says: Dec 27, 2015 11:25 PM

Jason Garrett is an Ivy League History Major who was a journeyman backup QB in the NFL that became QB coach for a Miami Dolphins tam that didn’t pass much during Garrett’s tenure there for 2 years.

Jerry Jones let Parcells walk away, hired Jason Garrett to run the Cowboys offense and then set about searching for a HC which Jerry eventually named Wade Phillips as HC.

Wade was HC in name only and ran the defense while Garrett took control of a high powered offense that Parcells and Sean Payton had designed.

Garrett has not gotten the Cowboys any further than when he had the roster Parcells put together. He has not shown progress.

To make things worse, Jerry Jones has had to bring in numerous ex head coaches in the NFL trying to coach Jason Garrett up and make him look better than he really is.

And Jason Garrett himself has stated that he fails to make in game adjustments he knows he should make but just doesn’t make them.

Several seasons in a row Garrett has cost the Cowboys games due to poor play calling, lack of making adjustments, and poor managing of the clock.

Probably wont change though. Cowboys fans poor money into Jerry Jones bank vaults no matter if the Cowboys win or lose. And the stadium is a bigger draw than the Cowboys team. Add to that the fact Jerry Jones has insulated himself from fan ire by courting corporations and building an empire that services his own product/brand via all the franchise businesses he gets involved in with ex coaches and players.

Cowboys keep making money and Jerry Jones sees it as a vote of confidence by the fans to keep doing what he is doing.

  36. fordmandalay says: Dec 27, 2015 11:51 PM

Seriously, if I was Garrett, got fired but STILL got paid $6 million a year for 4 more years, I’d retire and enjoy myself. Look at the Hell he’s been through with the Cows – whats the attraction of going back into that with another terrible team, with another terrible ahole billionaire owner?

  37. GoRangers says: Dec 28, 2015 12:49 AM

If Garrett and his crew isn’t the problem explain how Weeden has strung together two consecutive wins immediately after going to another team, when he couldn’t string together two consecutive first downs in Dallas? If Jones doesn’t give him the boot, his criteria for an acceptable coach is different from the fan’s. Garrett doesn’t even get upset about losing or being crucified by the fans and media. That might be a prerequisite for a priest or something but not an NFL football coach. At this point I ask myself why is he doing something that he obviously has no aptitude for? Where is the job satisfaction? It’s got to be the paycheck. And Jones is okay with that.

  38. fpineda1854cat2009 says: Dec 28, 2015 6:44 AM

Anymore play like what the Cowboys are giving and if the fan base starts to exit it will cost Jerry a lot more than Garrett.

  39. romophobic says: Dec 28, 2015 6:53 AM

As a Cowboys fan I don’t really know what Garret does aside from the occasional clapping as his team comes off the field. I don’t think his headphones are hooked up to anything.

  40. cowboysdude says: Dec 28, 2015 8:02 AM

Who cares? I could care less how much money he loses that’s his own fault. He needs to make this right and hire a competent HC.

  41. Alamo Tickets says: Dec 28, 2015 3:09 PM

the scheme the Cowboys use and the lack of respect for their head coach are reasons to get rid of Garrett. A coach who does nothing to a player who slaps a clipboard out of an assistant coach’s hands during a nationally televised game but cuts two players weeks later for showing up to a meeting not wearing suits….yeah I’m sure they (players) have all sorts of respect for him…not.

  42. longtimecowboy says: Dec 28, 2015 3:47 PM

I know the world is not fair but take a look at the record Wade Phillips gets 8/8 and 11/5 i think not real sure but he darn sure never had 5/11 plus look at him now he at least has a real sh ot at super bowl appearance Plus it sure seems as though players coaches who had hard time in Dallas do real well with other teams latest one of course is wheeden another one is our old offensive line coach it just looks like the common denominator for losing is Jason Garrett you give somebody a chance with somebody else and they succeed. Hopefully you get Sean Payton back I know they are not many out there that will play for Sir Jerry and his side kick Stephen hell I know go get danny w look I’m just tired of losing and watching the team that has no discipline they can’t last through four quarters of ball. give me a Team that looks at each other and can still breath in the 4th

The reality is that Jerry is paying for the privilege of having the world’s most expensive sock puppet on the sideline. No sock puppet HC is ever going to call out the GM even in the mildest of ways. Jerruh isn’t enabling Garrett, it’s the other way around. Garrett is one of the ways Jerruh self enables.

Jerruh hires a sock puppet then when something does need to be done and nothing is people are surprised? smh

Yeah, because this systems is working SOOOOO well for them thus far. Romo is done at age 36. Why do you think the 49ers, Browns, and Redskins haven’t cut Kaepernick, Manziel, or RGIII? They are going to dangle them in from of that senile old bastard and see how desperate he is to get a new (and younger) QB.

For all of those bashing the addition of Darren McFadden, i take it none of you have realized that he is the 5th leading rusher in the NFL, and did not start a game until week 7. Not to mention, the dude runs hard and finishes runs physical. What i have seen from him this year in no way demonstrates a player “made of glass”.

  48. tangledorchard says: Dec 30, 2015 2:37 AM

The only move that can help the Cowboys is for the Jones family to have Jerry declared incompetent and committed to God’s waiting room. They say virtual reality will be the big thing in 2016 and there should be a way for Jerry not to know that he’s been filed away.

  49. usedjock says: Dec 30, 2015 12:00 PM

The Cowboys are a team that can afford to eat that kind of salary to fire Garrett.

But, my question is who would want to go to Dallas and be Jerry Jones’s lapdog?

  50. alfredogarciashead says: Jan 2, 2016 9:32 AM

That would be beautiful. Laying the blame for the season on the coach when it was the “GM” who didn’t bother getting a decent backup QB or NFL quality RB for the coach. Of course if that “GM” was too busy signing questionable character guys I could see how that happened.
