The Colts were down to one healthy quarterback this week, but they remedied that on Tuesday by dusting off an item from the quarterback recycling bin.
The Colts announced that they have signed Josh Freeman a day after working him out. He joins Stephen Morris, who signed last week, as able-bodied quarterbacks in Indianapolis.
Charlie Whitehurst is on injured reserve, Andrew Luck hasn’t been medically cleared and Matt Hasselbeck separated his shoulder last Sunday, so there’s a good chance Morris and Freeman will be the two quarterbacks for the Colts against the Titans in Week 17. That’s not ideal for a team that still has a chance to make the playoffs, but they’d still need eight other games to go their way even if they win so less than ideal situations are nothing new for the 2015 Colts.
Freeman was a first-round pick of the Buccaneers in 2009, but never followed up a good 2010 with other good seasons. He was ultimately released three games into the 2013 season and played one game for the Vikings later that year to mark his final regular season appearance in the NFL.
The Colts also promoted linebacker Amarlo Herrera to the 53-man roster and placed linebacker Josh McNary on injured reserve Tuesday.
