Report: Colts plan to fire Pagano, undecided on Grigson

Chuck Pagano AP

The Colts are planning to fire coach Chuck Pagano, ESPN’s Mike Wells reported.

The news attributed to Wells flashed across the network’s breaking news ticker around 3:20 p.m. Thursday.

Pagano took over in 2012 and the Colts went 11-5 in each of his first three seasons. Wednesday, Wells wrote about the “toxic” relationship between Pagano and Colts general manager Ryan Grigson, who also took over in 2012.

Wells reported that Grigson is not guaranteed to remain in his job for 2016.

The Colts are 7-8 heading into Sunday’s season finale, and none of this is unexpected. They were 2-5 in games injured quarterback Andrew Luck played.

Wednesday, Pagano responded to rumors he didn’t want to return by telling reporters he would “fight [his] ass off to be the coach here.”

Doesn’t matter unless they send Grigson packing with him.

Too bad really. No help from the dimwit GM.

  4. fanboyarmy says: Dec 31, 2015 3:29 PM

The only way he can be “fired” is if they let him go before the end of the game Sunday. Otherwise, his contract quietly expires.

  5. thinredline69 says: Dec 31, 2015 3:29 PM

No stability in these organizations like the Colts. If Mike Tomlin had one bad season after going 11-5 three times you think the Rooney’s would overreact and fire him? Colts ownership/management is a total joke that doesn’t get it.

  6. mariorat says: Dec 31, 2015 3:30 PM

    Shocker!

  7. stampnhawk says: Dec 31, 2015 3:32 PM

In Colts fashion, should raise a banner announcing it, and tell Chuck to head out to the field and look up.

Irsay and his garbage bag of cash (and pills) has nowhere to go but down.

  8. Seprix says: Dec 31, 2015 3:32 PM

So Pagano is going. Okay. But the Colts are still undecided on Grigson? What!? He’s the worst GM ever! Here’s a good idea, waste all your cap space on aging fossils Frank Gore and Andre Johnson, and then do nothing about that bad defense and offensive line in the draft, even picking up an undersized WR in the first round. There’s so much wrong with this guy, and I don’t understand why he’s not fired yet.

  9. patsfan2112 says: Dec 31, 2015 3:32 PM

    Colts plan to chuck Pagano

  10. redrew says: Dec 31, 2015 3:33 PM

With all the HGH mills in in Indy, you’d think Luck would have healed faster.

  11. patriottony says: Dec 31, 2015 3:33 PM

The karma of being wet pants,,,5 yr olds (LAST yrs playoffs) is coming home to haunt them. To look up and see “AFC FINALISTS” banner…wth is that? You lost 45-7…and for that you hang a banner?

  12. touchdownelvis says: Dec 31, 2015 3:33 PM

That’s not the Wells report that the Colts were looking for.

  13. willycents says: Dec 31, 2015 3:34 PM

They cannot fire him. His contract is up at the end of the year. Maybe, not renew his contract, but, not fire him.
Since ESPN is reporting it as being fired, he will probably get a lifetime extension.

    Welcome to Nashville.

  15. rjc32586 says: Dec 31, 2015 3:35 PM

If they’re only firing one, it should be Grigson. He’s had a terrible team building strategy the last few years. But they should probably get rid of both and just start fresh.

  16. packmangamble says: Dec 31, 2015 3:35 PM

He will be a “sought out” man and will find a new job very quickly!

  17. MichaelEdits says: Dec 31, 2015 3:36 PM

The question is will Irsay be drunk or sober when this happens.

  21. thepftpoet says: Dec 31, 2015 3:37 PM

Ryan Grigson traded a first rounder for Trent Richardson….

That should be enough of a reason to get fired.

  22. yorkmustgo says: Dec 31, 2015 3:38 PM

You guys called Kubiak a liar for saying “nothing has changed” with Peyton Manning. Are you going to call Mike Wells a liar for saying Chuck Pagano is going to be fired?

  23. xpensivewinos says: Dec 31, 2015 3:38 PM

Seems like it wasn’t that long ago when this team was “Chuck Strong,” no?

  24. dolphansanity says: Dec 31, 2015 3:39 PM

2-5 with Luck. 5-3 without Luck. Thats interesting. And the Dolphins will be calling him in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…ring

  25. bowenfootdoc2013 says: Dec 31, 2015 3:39 PM

How does this guy Mike Wells get off letting Pagnano know via the internet that he is going to be fired? This sucks folks! Or, am I missing something in the ESPN / NFL: Days of Our Lives?

  26. scottbrowning2 says: Dec 31, 2015 3:41 PM

Hopefully the Colts will keep Grigson. That way they can continue to suck and be a laughing stock for the rest of the league.

  27. yyc2phx says: Dec 31, 2015 3:41 PM

  30. tjjohnson98 says: Dec 31, 2015 3:43 PM

Not to defend Pagano, but it sure looks like Grigson has performed way worse in his role than Pagano has in his.

  31. coltzfan166 says: Dec 31, 2015 3:43 PM

For the last time, he’s not getting fired because he can’t be fired if he doesn’t have a contract, which expires after Sunday’s game

  32. chitown12 says: Dec 31, 2015 3:46 PM

Let’s get rid of Grigson and start over. He is a clown that spends more time kissing butt than fixing this team.

  33. ravensfan56 says: Dec 31, 2015 3:46 PM

Jim Irsay is the worst owner in the NFL. I’m glad his family left my city. As for the Ravens, I hope we fire Dean Pees and bring back Chuck Pagano.

  34. patsrthegreatest says: Dec 31, 2015 3:46 PM

  35. johnnyjagfan says: Dec 31, 2015 3:48 PM

ChuckStrong! How soon people forget…I’d dump the guy that traded a 1 for Trent Richardson. Chuck’s a good coach. This year’s been a mess. Getting rid of Chuck misses the point.

  36. mark888p says: Dec 31, 2015 3:49 PM

Pagano is the scapegoat for grigsons bad decisions. they need to fire grigson cause he is the cause for the bad offensive and defensive lines.

Just look at how the modern 49ers are doing post Harbaugh after firing him for a “bad” 8-8 season.

I think Pagano is a fine coach. I’m not a fan of their owner or GM (or the franchise for that matter – but I’m a Pats fan). I’m glad he’s going to go somewhere else and win instead of for that organization.

  56. 6ball says: Dec 31, 2015 4:11 PM

    .
The Patriots should thank the Colts for passing on Malcolm Brown in last year’s draft in favor of Philip Dorsett. Brown has become the Patriots #1 DT by fighting through a deep Patriots depth chart.

So surprised were the Patriots that the Colts passed on Brown, they had to scrap a deal with the Texans that had already been agreed upon.
    .

  57. superpatsfan4 says: Dec 31, 2015 4:13 PM

They hire the wrong guy in the first place for the head coaching position. The Colts would have been a true threat to New England if Bruce Arians was the head coach. However I’m not sure that Arians could have overcome how bad Gregson has been as the general manager and I think one of them would have been gone sooner or later. Now chuck is not a bad head coach and I bet he was a great positional Coach. In my opinion he’s going to land on his feet and probably do well but I pray for the franchise that ends up with Gregson later down the road. Actually I pray that the Steelers or the Ravens or the Broncos or the Jets end up with him and that way it will ensure the Patriots dynasty continues!

  58. gtrav says: Dec 31, 2015 4:16 PM

get that jealous rat grigson out of there asap

  59. soldierofhalas33 says: Dec 31, 2015 4:19 PM

He trades a first round pick for Trent Richardson, that should be enough to give Grigson the boot. He is a product of Philadelphia where the philosophy of building a team is through free agency and not the draft. You want long term sustained success, grab a GM that emphasizes the drafting of young talent.

I think Pagano is getting a raw deal here.

Stealing out of Baltimore in the middle of the night, with the franchise, team colors and logo, the Irsay family gave their middle finger to Baltimore. They than tanked two different years to get Manning and Luck and we are supposed to look at this franchise as something special.
