Report: Colts plan to fire Pagano, undecided on Grigson

AP

The Colts are planning to fire coach Chuck Pagano, ESPN’s Mike Wells reported.

The news attributed to Wells flashed across the network’s breaking news ticker around 3:20 p.m. Thursday.

Pagano took over in 2012 and the Colts went 11-5 in each of his first three seasons. Wednesday, Wells wrote about the “toxic” relationship between Pagano and Colts general manager Ryan Grigson, who also took over in 2012.

Wells reported that Grigson is not guaranteed to remain in his job for 2016.

The Colts are 7-8 heading into Sunday’s season finale, and none of this is unexpected. They were 2-5 in games injured quarterback Andrew Luck played.

Wednesday, Pagano responded to rumors he didn’t want to return by telling reporters he would “fight [his] ass off to be the coach here.”

  1. No stability in these organizations like the Colts. If Mike Tomlin had one bad season after going 11-5 three times you think the Rooney’s would overreact and fire him? Colts ownership/management is a total joke that doesn’t get it.

  2. In Colts fashion, should raise a banner announcing it, and tell Chuck to head out to the field and look up.

Irsay and his garbage bag of cash (and pills) has nowhere to go but down.

  3. So Pagano is going. Okay. But the Colts are still undecided on Grigson? What!? He’s the worst GM ever! Here’s a good idea, waste all your cap space on aging fossils Frank Gore and Andre Johnson, and then do nothing about that bad defense and offensive line in the draft, even picking up an undersized WR in the first round. There’s so much wrong with this guy, and I don’t understand why he’s not fired yet.

  4. The karma of being wet pants,,,5 yr olds (LAST yrs playoffs) is coming home to haunt them. To look up and see “AFC FINALISTS” banner…wth is that? You lost 45-7…and for that you hang a banner?

  5. They cannot fire him. His contract is up at the end of the year. Maybe, not renew his contract, but, not fire him.
Since ESPN is reporting it as being fired, he will probably get a lifetime extension.

  6. If they’re only firing one, it should be Grigson. He’s had a terrible team building strategy the last few years. But they should probably get rid of both and just start fresh.

  7. You guys called Kubiak a liar for saying “nothing has changed” with Peyton Manning. Are you going to call Mike Wells a liar for saying Chuck Pagano is going to be fired?

  8. 2-5 with Luck. 5-3 without Luck. Thats interesting. And the Dolphins will be calling him in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…ring

  9. How does this guy Mike Wells get off letting Pagnano know via the internet that he is going to be fired? This sucks folks! Or, am I missing something in the ESPN / NFL: Days of Our Lives?

  10. Pigano: ” I don’t know about any deflated footballs, I learned about the story when everyone else did, I had no prior knowledge about anything.”

    *Liar.

  11. Not to defend Pagano, but it sure looks like Grigson has performed way worse in his role than Pagano has in his.

  12. ChuckStrong! How soon people forget…I’d dump the guy that traded a 1 for Trent Richardson. Chuck’s a good coach. This year’s been a mess. Getting rid of Chuck misses the point.

Move over to the PIT section . . . Tomlin’s head is almost on a roasting spit.

  14. Seems ass backwards since a flawed roster provided by Grigson is the main reason for this failure. Pagano will end up ok but Colts may not.
As a Patriots fan I hope they blow him out and soon. REvenge is SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. All of this is due to air pressure. If the colts never would have ran thier mouths the curse wouldn’t have sent the colts and Ravens franchises back to the Stone Age.

  16. He will have no trouble finding a new spot, if he wants one. Maybe NC; nothing less than a DC. But probably not a Special Teams coach.

Just look at how the modern 49ers are doing post Harbaugh after firing him for a “bad” 8-8 season.

I think Pagano is a fine coach. I’m not a fan of their owner or GM (or the franchise for that matter – but I’m a Pats fan). I’m glad he’s going to go somewhere else and win instead of for that organization.

Once again Knute the Knucklehead shows he knows absolutely zero about the Steelers. They have patience… And brains… Knute not so much.

Paganism got a bad deal from a very bad GM.

  19. He will be a “sought out” man and will find a new job very quickly!

Several teams are interested in bringing him aboard as a “Trick Punt” Specialist.

  20. I think teams are firing coach’s to early Panthers are a prefect example…but a coach should be able to hire his own staff ,he shouldn’t be fired for the HE’s hires

  21. .
The Patriots should thank the Colts for passing on Malcolm Brown in last year’s draft in favor of Philip Dorsett. Brown has become the Patriots #1 DT by fighting through a deep Patriots depth chart.

So surprised were the Patriots that the Colts passed on Brown, they had to scrap a deal with the Texans that had already been agreed upon.
    .

  22. They hire the wrong guy in the first place for the head coaching position. The Colts would have been a true threat to New England if Bruce Arians was the head coach. However I’m not sure that Arians could have overcome how bad Gregson has been as the general manager and I think one of them would have been gone sooner or later. Now chuck is not a bad head coach and I bet he was a great positional Coach. In my opinion he’s going to land on his feet and probably do well but I pray for the franchise that ends up with Gregson later down the road. Actually I pray that the Steelers or the Ravens or the Broncos or the Jets end up with him and that way it will ensure the Patriots dynasty continues!

  23. He trades a first round pick for Trent Richardson, that should be enough to give Grigson the boot. He is a product of Philadelphia where the philosophy of building a team is through free agency and not the draft. You want long term sustained success, grab a GM that emphasizes the drafting of young talent.

I think Pagano is getting a raw deal here.

  24. Stealing out of Baltimore in the middle of the night, with the franchise, team colors and logo, the Irsay family gave their middle finger to Baltimore. They than tanked two different years to get Manning and Luck and we are supposed to look at this franchise as something special. So we are than made to think that Jim and Robert Irsay are great NFL owners who built great teams. They deserve everything bad that happens to them and that putrid franchise.

  25. As a Pats fan, I have to say I’m rooting for Grigson to stay in place and have an unprecedented run of miserable failure in Indianapolis.

  26. Jaguars fan here. For me, I’d love to see both fired. But as a football fan, what??????? Grigson traded for Trent Richardson. Let that sink in. Signed discard, has-been vets to fill spots that miserably failed. Injuries, missed kicks, but it’s Pagano’s fault???? Guy is class and won with a bad roster/good QB. Nutz

  27. So the guy gets to the playoffs three years in a row, barely misses out this year (due to the QB being hurt) and gets fired for it?! Irsay is an idiot! He’s going to keep the guy who traded a first round pick for a useless running back, not to mention various other examples of not finding adequate talent.

Not a Colts fan but come on!

  28. They won’t let go of Grigson until he signs a NON-DISCLOSURE Contract with Irsay & Goodell for his knowledge of the FRAUD committed by the Colts & the NFL in Deflate-Gate.

Absolutely right on the money. Also the way they treated Manning. The whole organization stinks.

  30. The Colts try to sink the Pats and end up swirling around the drain all year long. Luck said he felt “deflated” about the loss at the Pro Bowl. Hahaha

How you feeling now big guy?

You can’t even blame the record on you being injured because your record was WELL under .500 at 28.58%

  31. Completely stupid. Your franchise QB which 20+ teams in the NFL doesn’t have, had a lacerated kidney so fire the coach. We will give you Rex Ryan. What do you think you’re going to get???????

    Well said, couldn’t agree more.

On Manning- they cut him on March 7 of that year. he was due a $28 million payment on March 8 which they then avoided. It was the right move given his neck issues.

  33. I know the Jags are keeping Bradley for one more season but they should hire Pagano as HC and make Bradley the DC, sign Mario Williams, draft and sign a boatload of defensive players and make the playoffs next year.

  35. The media prophecy has been fulfilled. They’ve been talking about it all season for some reason, but thankfully I won’t see 5 articles a day talking about pagano’s job anymore
