Colts circle the wagons on Andrew Luck rib report

The Colts are many things. Boring isn’t one of them.

The recent flurry of leaks that trace to a soon-to-be-former coaching staff has led to a response from the team on the only leak that could result in money flowing into the NFL’s fine fund.

Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star, updating his story regarding the severity of quarterback Andrew Luck’s early-season rib injury, adds information from the team. Specifically, Colts COO Pete Ward acknowledged to holder that Luck had a rib cartilage injury, but that the injury was never bad enough to compel disclosure of it on the injury report.

It never limited him in any way,” Ward wrote in an email to Holder. “Remember, he was dealing with a significant shoulder injury at the time.”

Curiously, Friday’s comment came from Ward and not G.M. Ryan Grigson, who issued the original statement insisting that the team’s injury reports are accurate. It’s possible that, as the stories emerging on the brink of the expected firing of coach Chuck Pagano and company drag Grigson into the spotlight of scrutiny, Grigson is keeping his head low.

That may not be enough to keep Grigson’s head off the chopping block. Whether own Jim Irsay ends up swinging an axe other than one of his many guitars is something we’ll learn soon.
