Report: Tom Coughlin to meet with ownership Monday afternoon

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - JANUARY 03: Head coach Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants runs onto the field before the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium on January 3, 2016 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New York Giants 35-30. There’s been no word from the Giants yet about whether Tom Coughlin will return as the team’s coach for the 2016 season, but it sounds like there should be some update about their plans before the day is out.

Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports that Coughlin will meet with team owners John Mara and Steve Tisch at 1 p.m. ET. Graziano adds that a “a decision may have been made,” but there’s no hint about what that decision might be.

Coughlin has a year left on his contract, but there was talk over the weekend that Coughlin would resign this week. On Sunday night, however, Mike Florio reported that there is an “emerging sense” that he won’t walk away and that there may be disagreement between Mara and Tisch about whether to take the decision out of Coughlin’s hands.

If the Giants are going to start a coaching search, they’d likely prefer to have that decision squared away sooner rather than later in order to line up interviews with their desired candidates. If that decision comes during the reported meeting, they could start scheduling those chats before the day is out.

  2. whatnojets says: Jan 4, 2016 11:16 AM

They are going to sign Tom to a five year guaranteed contract, guaranteeing another five years of misery fro Giant fans and five years of happiness for the Jets fans!

    Fire the GM.
    Phins should take Coughlin.

    Tom…..just plead ignorance

  5. justintuckrule says: Jan 4, 2016 11:18 AM

Extend him for the last two years of an Eli/Odell era before Eli retires and we become the Browns.

  6. weepingjebus says: Jan 4, 2016 11:19 AM

He was supposed to meet them this morning, but he keeps faking a cramp.

  7. jmuller516 says: Jan 4, 2016 11:22 AM

Tom Coughlin is far from the issue (Dont let me hear he cant manage the clock)…. Fact is, he took a talentless roster and had them leading in 8 games in the 4th quarter only to win 1 of them due to a putrid last ranked defense..

Jerry Reese needs to go, NOW…

  8. dontbeemo says: Jan 4, 2016 11:23 AM

All you have to do is show the game changing play from yesterday…

The pick 6 was caused by pressure from the blind side allowed by a raw, rookie LT. Fun fact, instead of Pugh we could have had Kyle Long (very next pick).

I can’t think of one move Jerry Reese has made in 5 years that put the team in a better position except drafting OBJ.

TC deserves coach of the year for even having the giants in a position to lose games late in the 4th quarter given that roster. (Hyperbole, yes… he doesn’t really deserve COTY).

Jets fans are happy? You havent made the playoffs since 2010 or won a SB since 1969.. What can you possibly be happy about? Especially after getting laughed off the field by the Bills yesterday…

Oh wait, The Jets won their Super Bowl week 16 when they beat the Patriots..

    #FireReese

  11. kev86 says: Jan 4, 2016 11:32 AM

    Tom Coughlin is a legend.

-Beat #1 ND as HC of BC in 93
    – 2nd yr as HC of expansion team he went to AFC Champ and again 3 years later.
    – beat the 18-0 Patriots as HC of NYG in the SB and again four years later.

the list can be a lot longer.

The Hall of Fame awaits Coach Coughlin

  12. mortyglickstein says: Jan 4, 2016 11:32 AM

Get him some players and let him coach one more year. No playoffs 2016/17 then he retires.

As much as I dislike Jerry Reese, he has run into some back luck injury wise..
At one point Hakeen Nicks and Victor Cruz were superstars, injuries have derailed their careers.
David Wilson, neck injury you cant blame him for.
Neither can you with Kenny Phillips, Steve Smith.

He should have signed Linval Joseph to his 2nd contract, but he did draft Hankins to replace him

Reese’s issues are 3-4th round and beyond.. Way too many misses..

There isnt 1 player on the team from the 2012 draft

  14. arz9278 says: Jan 4, 2016 11:34 AM

Keep him and fire Reese. The talent is clearly the problem. Coughlin has more than proven himself as a coach.

  15. Eli Pacheco says: Jan 4, 2016 11:35 AM

They could do much worse. Does he still command the locker room? I’d give him another year.

  16. justintuckrule says: Jan 4, 2016 11:36 AM

There’s not one player on defense I’d lose sleep over if he wasn’t on our roster next year. Not a one.

  17. dwinsgames says: Jan 4, 2016 11:39 AM

Though Tom has made me crazy over the years, on balance he has done a good job. But it is time to go.

  18. savoirlaire says: Jan 4, 2016 11:40 AM

I’m sure I will get flamed, but Coughlin has got to go, I thought he should have gone a couple years ago. Oh, and his record sucked under the end of Accorsi’s tenure as well. Not that I’m a fan of Reese’s, but Coughlin is just an embarrassing red faced puffy fossil now. The game has not just passed him by, it has lapped him. And thanks for the two incredibly fluky Super Bowls, Coach!

  19. chesswhileyouplaycheckers says: Jan 4, 2016 11:40 AM

Probably too much to hope for that he walks in and they present him Reese’s head on a platter surrounded by the scalps of the ‘training’ staff but a guy and dream…

I got lambasted by a couple of posters here for slamming Reese at the beginning of the season but appear to be among the majority now, thanks for the company and for anyone that hasn’t come aboard yet there’s still plenty of room on the train hop on

  20. gobolts says: Jan 4, 2016 11:40 AM

Coughlin has more than proven himself as a coach.
    =====================
    I hear you.

Think he would consider coming down to sunny San Diego? The Chargers need someone like him with his coaching experience.

  21. gmen6820 says: Jan 4, 2016 11:40 AM

Coughlin is NOT the issue. Since the Super Bowl era, the GMen have had bottom-ranked defenses every year. The fact that this team was in a position to win is unbelievable.

Jerry Reese needs to be fired. He has blown the mid & late rounds for the last few years and the shoddy roster is his doing. With the 10th pick this year, the team needs to give his successor a chance to mark the franchise with a high pick.

I would look at the strength, conditioning and training staffs as well. This team is ALWAYS injured far beyond the league norm. A new program needs to be put in place. Bad luck is one thing, but consistent “bad luck” is something else.

These the last few years with Eli; don’t rebuild the coaching staff now (and McAdoo is not head coach material yet).

  22. tommykramer9 says: Jan 4, 2016 11:42 AM

Tom, just tell them you agree with Johnny Manziel…

  23. Big Ant TV says: Jan 4, 2016 11:42 AM

give TC a 2 year extension with a 3rd year option
that vie him more time with Eli and OBJ till his rookie deal expires and he start crying for top WR contract then walk away
FIRE REESE for young football mind that can get the players they need also, if mr. mara wants u back ask him too spend some $$$ on dome legit free agents, this team is 5-10 good players and or draft picks from being in the super bowl again
FIX THE O-LINE GET MORE WRs too help OBJ Cruz is not 100% reliable even with 1-2 years off basically and get some LBs and DBs that make plays

At the very least, we are extremely consistent.

  25. tylawspick6 says: Jan 4, 2016 11:46 AM

The game has passed him by for years now. Jerry Reese has also had some terrible drafts and salary allocations under the cap.

Wait until Beckham starts clamoring for Dez Bryant money.

    Ouch.

  26. iman62 says: Jan 4, 2016 11:51 AM

I heard he has a nice early bird dinner scheduled after that meeting.

  27. skoobyfl says: Jan 4, 2016 11:56 AM

Bills can bring Tom in as an assistant coach, that’s about all he’s good for.

  28. lonewizard says: Jan 4, 2016 11:57 AM

If management thinks Tom Coughlin is the problem then we need new management.

    Thank you.

  29. laces out says: Jan 4, 2016 11:58 AM

Say what you want about Reese. I’ll admit he’s had some hindsight failures in drafting that many thought were great ideas at the time such as David Wilson, Reuben Randle, Dmantri Moore and many complete head-scratching mid round failures. He also has refused to draft our most glaring weakness with a high pick: line backer. Now that those GM grievances are out of the way:

Coughlin should have retired on top when he had the chance. Blame the roster all you want but his team commits one delay of game penalty a game and has blown multiple games in the final minute this year. We almost lost to San Fran this year too. San Fran!

I though replacing Kevin Gilbride and Perry Fewell would revitalize the team, but I honestly can’t tell you the difference between current and former coordinators, and I wonder how much of the play calling comes from Coughlin himself.

Those two SB runs were great, but Coughlin was on the hot seat during both seasons, and excluding 2008 (before Plax shot himself) the team has been mediocre or sub par every year.

I’m grateful for his contributions but it’s been time to move on.

  30. nflgtcfl says: Jan 4, 2016 12:06 PM

Coughlin has been a great coach. His NY work speaks for itself but don’t forget his great work with the expansion Jags.

Sadly every just about every NFL team has glorified children on the roster. Regardless of who coaches players tire of their methods and start to tune them out. Based on the last few weeks it seems too many of the NYG players don’t realize the caliber of coach they have and are ready to throw him away.

Sadly, the children usually get their way.

there is a rift between mara and tisch on the decision?

    who wants what?

  32. abninf says: Jan 4, 2016 12:17 PM

For getting one championship with Eli as QB he should be in the HOF on the first ballot. For getting two with Eli he should have his own personal HOF.

  33. generationwalker says: Jan 4, 2016 12:18 PM

They should clean house. It doesn’t matter what fans say or the media or whomever, Coughlin was a helluva coach. How many NFL coaches win 2 championships? How many can coach a team to 2 championships while both times having to play in the wild card round? The bottom line is that the Giants have become stale, and so it’s a must for them to move on. They might consider keeping McAdoo though.

  34. giantsfan2104 says: Jan 4, 2016 12:29 PM

    Jerry Reese needs to go.

  35. arwiv says: Jan 4, 2016 12:31 PM

They have another high draft pick and a boat load of cap space….in the NFL quick turn arounds are commonplace; I could live with both TC and Reese…..the only person who truly needs to be fired is the one who runs their strength and conditioning program, Mr Ronnie Barnes.

Yes, TC and Reese can both do better, but when you lead the NFL in injuries for like 4 years running now, its not easy to be successful no matter how great your coach and/or GM is.

  36. blynch67 says: Jan 4, 2016 12:37 PM

The Giants need a lot of new talent on defense.

So, I think you keep TC, unless you have Sean Payton lined up. TC occasionally makes me crazy (as others have said), but he is still the current best available option.

Jerry Reese, on the other hand…

  37. bonitalocal says: Jan 4, 2016 12:42 PM

As a Pat’s fan, I admire and respect the hell out of Coughlin.
He seems like a stand-up, no B.S., kind of a man.
The talent that he had to coach this year was not that great. OBJ is certainly a talent, (although a head-case), and Eli is a decent QB, but he certainly is no super-star.
Coughlin consistently coaches this team at or above their talent level. And God knows that his team is Kryptonite to my team!
    Good Luck, Tom. Whatever happens.

  38. wallabear says: Jan 4, 2016 12:48 PM

No Sean Payton without Drew Brees. That would be like Belichick without Brady (i.e., Partners In Crime). So then, what to do with Eli[te] Manning?

  39. daytontriangles says: Jan 4, 2016 1:17 PM

Another Patriots fan here. For nearly a decade, no team has put fear into the hearts of Patriots fans during playoff season like the Giants. I have great respect for the team and that is in no small part to Coughlin. if Coughlin does part way with the Giants, I hope it’s on his terms and timetable. He’s earned it.

  40. a1b24312 says: Jan 4, 2016 1:33 PM

Yes, Reese needs to go. But Coach, it’s time. You’ve done well.

That said, if they release him, the Eagles ought to call Coughlin. A good stable HC. What a concept!

  41. tarrilasgiant1090 says: Jan 4, 2016 1:55 PM

The only other coach I’d like coaching the NY Giants currently works for Robert Kraft, and I don’t think they are letting him get away. Just saying.

  42. chaffee5355 says: Jan 4, 2016 2:14 PM

Tom is not a quitter so don’t expect him to resign. He put the ball in the court of the owners who won’t dare to make him the scapegoat. He knows the players he has and they are below the standards of the Giants. They need to draft a QB to get Eli off his throne. I have stated many times, that he is not his brother nor is he an elite QB and is overpaid. You always hear about guys not reporting or employing some kind of strategy to get a raise but did you ever hear of any of them having their salary cut for a bad year. I mean, how can Eli continue to put himself on the pedestal and come out for Tom Coughlin like Eli himself had nothing to do with the bad years. Notice, I said years.

  43. cantescapekarma says: Jan 4, 2016 2:17 PM

Coughlin is out as head coach. Wow.
