Tom Brady’s MRI reveals sprained ankle, expected to be OK

MIAMI GARDENS, FL - JANUARY 03: Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots looks on before the game against the Miami Dolphins at Sun Life Stadium on January 3, 2016 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by Chris Trotman/Getty Images) Getty Images

That sound you hear is greater New England exhaling as one.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady underwent an MRI on his sore right ankle, but it revealed no fractures, just a sprain, and he’s expected to be ready for the playoffs.

That’s good news for a guy who was hobbling noticeably after yesterday’s loss to the Dolphins, during which he took a low shot from Dolphins defensive Ndamukong Suh.

By securing the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs, Brady has time to recover before they play in the early game on Jan. 16.

Lucky he doesn’t have broken ribs after that cheap shot by the Miami linebacker who speared him from behind . That was deliberate and he should receive a hefty fine.

  4. jonwill57 says: Jan 4, 2016 10:18 AM

Stop with the “low shot”. If a defender is makes initial contact above the knees and his momentum and that thing called gravity causes him to slide down the QB’s leg, it’s not a “low shot”. It’s a tackle.

However, it will be meaningless IF Kraft does not come down hard on the entire coaching staff.

There is NO BUSINESS as USUAL here folks.
The weaknesses of the Patriots have been exposed and they will either change the Play Calls and ADJUST or they will be ‘One & Done’.

Jackson is the WRONG RB for this weak OLine.

They needed a shifty small RB that can hide behind the OLine and find the very small holes.

Tom Brady was hit by Suh after he got blindsided by a Patriot. Watch the replay. The Dolphins took care of Brady very nicely yesterday, way to knock them out of the #1 seed. Maybe next time when you come down to South Florida you try a little more, and don’t run the ball so much. Brady can actually throw the ball, so what was the problem??? Every team has injuries, so stop going on about that, it’s pathetic making it an excuse every week.
A low sprain, oh dear, well wait for him to get hit again in the playoffs, because that’s the way to beat him, everyone knows that.

  13. paulrevereshorse1775 says: Jan 4, 2016 10:31 AM

    Pats fan here….

first, regarding that hit by Suh….it certainly was a low hit. But upon replay it was obvious that one of NE’s lineman had Suh by the face mask or collar. Would he still have hit Brady low….maybe, but we’ll never know. So I think he deserves a pass on this on (wow, that was hard to say).

I’d also like to say that before Edelman got injured, even with all the O-line shuffling, the Pats were rolling in all phases of the game. I had high expectations for this team. But the injuries have been brutal. So while my hopes are still very high for this team, I have relaxed my expectations a bit.

Right now I think every AFC team has flaws and could be beat by every other AFC team….with maybe the exception of Houston, which I feel is a notch below the rest. Just my opinion.

May the best team represent the AFC in the SB.

The hit yesterday on Brady reminded of the shot that Lee Flowers put on Brady’s ankle way back in the 2002 AFCCG against the Steelers. Just the way Brady rolled over the player and all of that. The hit by Flowers was as dirty as they come, it was not the first Steelers player to dive into Brady’s ankle in that game. The Suh hit yesterday, I don’t believe was dirty, just unfortunate. Now the Olivier hit, that was text book cheap shot from behind after the play

So they could play the Bengals, KC or Houston. Denver, the Steelers, KC or Houston. I think the Steelers (with Big Ben) win this week, with KC beating Houston. Steelers/Broncos = toss up. Pats/KC = toss up. Neither one an easy game. Still hoping my Pats can punch a ticket to the AFCCG.

  17. tajuara says: Jan 4, 2016 10:36 AM

I was surprised at the way New England played yesterday, but then again, they can get hot in the playoffs, and there is no guarantee that Denver will win the divisional game. I would love to see a Brady Vs Manning at least one more time though.

  18. solo681 says: Jan 4, 2016 10:37 AM

I watched the video of Suh diving at Brady’s legs.

No worry = for Suh, because Goodell gave him the “Go Ahead’ call and let the Refs know as well.

Did you not read that Goodell filed his Appeal Brief in a YELLOW Folder ?

That was a CLEAR message to Kraft, Brady & BB stating this:
‘You will win the US Court Appeal – But I will not let you win in the Playoffs – My Yellow Flags will OVERTURN your path to the SB’.

Always fun how folks that claim Brady is a no talent system QB also hope he doesn’t play. Who’s leading the league in passing TDs this year, anyway? You’ll find out in a few weeks even if Brady has to play on a peg leg.

  21. hatersgonnahatehate says: Jan 4, 2016 10:43 AM

The Suh hit was scary, but not a cheap shot. He got facemasked and rolled on top of him.

Vernon spearing Brady in the back after the throw was made was blatanty a cheap shot.

  22. thebirdofprey says: Jan 4, 2016 10:44 AM

On the 1st 10 plays yesterday the Patriots ran the ball 8 times. That told me what right there what Belichick thought of the teams pass blocking.

Tom Brady is getting absolutely no protection from tackles and even the guards. You can bring back Randy Moss in his prime and its going to make no difference on whether the team will move the chains.

The one Pats fan said every AFC team has flaws and he is absolutely correct. Patriot offensive line, Bengals back up QB (that could change), Broncos/Texans passing games, Steeler’s defense.

Marcus Cannon is to blame for the Suh hit. He completely missed his block so he grabbed Suh by the facemask/helmet,to be fair… The O-line has to do much better at protecting Brady. DO YOUR JOB!

  27. bullcharger says: Jan 4, 2016 10:58 AM

Not sure if anyone realizes that Tom didn’t miss a snap because of the injury. He came back in and was moving ok. It’s not serious.

The only serious thing is getting Vollmer back for the playoff game. No Vollmer and I don’t know if they can win.

Edelman matters a ton too, and given how long he’s been practicing I assume he’ll play ok, but without Vollmer I just don’t know.

Injuries to players are unfortunate no matter which teams and it’s vile to rejoice that players get hurt. Shame on you! These players put their health on the line for the sport we all love. How could you losers hate the Patriots so much? Don’t tell me because they cheat because your teams cheat worse than the Patriots. We lose and win some the same as other teams but you haters have gone sick in the head. It’s sad…
In the playoffs, it’s a clean slate. This is the one and done phase. Hopefully the Patriots get healthy and play like they mean it. Like the remaining teams, we are hopeful. Put down the nasty haters and just enjoy the games. You already missed so much good history by hating. Brady is a legend and so is Peyton. When their era is gone you will feel like an empty sack. They get Amendola back and Edelman healthy and some fair running and this team will be a factor. I would not count them out. Denver didn’t exactly look like killers against a 4-12 san diego team. A good pass rush and playing up with put manning in his place

They should be the healthiest they have been since week 2, Vollmer will be back, Edelman, Hightower, Jones, Coleman, as well. McCourty, Chung, Ninko, Kline, Dola will all be alot closer to 100%, same with Brady. Pitts or KC as the most ” dangerous ” teams in AFC playoffs? How ridiculous, geez. The defending champs with BB and Brady, gronk, etc… are the cream of the AFC crop, as the playoffs will show.

  42. mathprof84 says: Jan 4, 2016 11:43 AM

Sad to say, I don’t think back to back Super Bowls are in the cards. You can’t win every year, though it would have been particularly sweet this year.
Still – if 12-4 and a first round bye is your down year, then you are doing something right.

If they are able to flip a switch and get some kind of pass protection going, and if Tom can come back at 80%, they still have a shot at winning 2 games and going on to the SB. I don’t think the number 2 seed will hurt them, as I think the Steelers will knock the Broncos off anyway.

For the record: Don’t think the Suh hit was dirty. Just one of those things.

I largely agree with everything you said. It mirrors thoughts of my own. The only thing I might add is that the Pats of the last four weeks really resemble their pre-season squad in effort, playcalling, and even inconsistency of personell. They looked like just another crappy preseason team this year until the first couple of games of the regular season and then clearly they were more versatile and better coached. I would not be surprised to see them take the field on the 16th with a completely different identity and level of preparation than they have the last month. If they do watch out.

That said, the AFC is tight. I agree with the poster who said that any one of these teams except Houston has a chance to get hot and run the table.
