Top 20 picks in draft order set, Titans are on the clock

Clock hands close to midnight Getty Images

Twelve teams have games to prepare for this morning.

But for the other 20, the 2016 NFL Draft looms, and with the playoff field set, we know the order of the first 20 picks.

The Titans earned the top pick in the draft with yesterday’s loss to the Colts, since they lost to an even worse collection of teams than the 3-13 Browns. Strength of schedule is used to break draft order ties, making Cleveland’s September win over Tennessee irrelevant.

The Browns will pick second, followed by the Chargers, Cowboys and Jaguars.

Here’s the list of the top 20 slots in this year’s draft shown with records and strength of schedule numbers. The remaining picks will be filled in as the playoffs progress (wild card weekend losers will take slots 21-24, divisional round losers 25-28, etc.):

1. Titans: 3-13 (.492 )

2. Browns: 3-13 (.531)

3. Chargers: 4-12 (.527)

4. Cowboys: 4-12 (.531)

5. Jaguars: 5-11 (.473)

6. Ravens: 5-11 (.508)

7.  49ers: 5-11 (.539)

8. Dolphins: 6-10 (.469)

9.  Buccaneers: 6-10 (.484)

10. Giants: 6-10 (.500)

11. Bears: 6-10 (.547)

12. Saints: 7-9 (.504)

13. Eagles: 7-9 (.508)

14. Raiders: 7-9 (.512)

15. Rams: 7-9 (.527)

16. Lions: 7-9 (.535)

17. Falcons: 8-8 (.481)

18. Colts: 8-8 (.500)

19. Bills: 8-8 (.508)

20. Jets: 10-6 (.441)

    Darin and Florio,

If you can fix one thing in Pro sports please fix the draft. It sucks to see teams tank to get the top seed. I propose that the team with the worst record DOES NOT get the #1 pick. I say that the 4 teams that JUST miss the playoffs get the first 4 picks. It would make every team fight all the way to the last game of the season to get one of those spots. Instead of sitting star players and basically mailing in games in week 17. Fans pay big bucks to see games and should be rewarded with effort every week.

Wonder what over hyped player will land in Tenn…..

  3. wchadwicks says: Jan 4, 2016 9:31 AM

The Chargers, the Cowboys and the Ravens will likely use their high picks to recover from their hiccups, where as the Titans, the Browns and the Jaguars will likely continue to be, well, the Titans, Browns and Jaguars.

    _________

If they would have lost that game, they would have the first pick. So it was kind of relevant.

Teams that JUST miss the playoffs are already fighting to the end of the season. This proposal isn’t going to make Tennessee and Cleveland play any harder.

With the 1st pick of the 2016 NFL Draft the Tennessee Titans select:

    Laremy Tunsil, LT, Ole Miss

The Cleveland Browns are on the clock…

20 teams who will not sniff a Superbowl for the next decade at least. Thank God I’m a Redskin fan. Dan Snyder knows what he’s doing. #HTTR

Why do people assume teams tank and that they just don’t suck? You think if Tennessee and Cleveland had played any harder they would have won more?

  9. uknepatsfan says: Jan 4, 2016 9:59 AM

First round of the draft sadly holds no interest to me this year.

    Flippin Goodell!

Baalke will be meticulously searching the draft selection for players with torn ligaments and punters.

Come on now, the Skins will be the Skins this off season. Snyder won’t change, he will force his GM into spending big dollars on some big names because he thinks those will sell tickets and merch while leading them to a SB. Until Snyder stays home and let’s the GM and coach build a football team that can compete every season it will be the same old Snyder Skins.

Nkemdiche or Treadwell to Baltimore. Make it happen, Ozzie!

  13. jjackwagon says: Jan 4, 2016 10:12 AM

The Titans & Browns might want to fill their HC vacancies before they worry about their 1st pick of the draft.

  14. Rdog says: Jan 4, 2016 10:16 AM

Teams don’t tank for draft picks. I’m not saying that it’s never happened or will never happen, but it’s rare. The Titans didn’t tank. They are all playing for their jobs – few players are safe on a losing team. Also, they are professional athletes who want to win. I’ve been on the sidelines… The players get just as mad as the fans do sometimes, even towards the end of the season.

Nice job Miami, your win yesterday exchanged the #5 pick for the #8 pick

  16. therealraider says: Jan 4, 2016 10:34 AM

Sucks when winning is losing, the Bills fell 7 spots in the draft by beating the Jets, Congratulations.

  17. chawk12thman says: Jan 4, 2016 10:38 AM

“You play to win the game” and teams don’t tank to get a better draft pick. Given that they are all fighting for there jobs going forward, adding to resume’s, etc….the games are played as well as most can give.

Sitting players (resting) in week 17 to get prepared for the playoffs is a concern, but quite frankly, it really didn’t play a big part this year as well……..The NFL did a good job scheduling games so that division rivals played each other or at the same time in week 17, so “resting” was really hard to get accomplished.

  18. liberalmel says: Jan 4, 2016 10:40 AM

It would be great if NFL had the same rules as Premier League Soccer. The always bad teams (Browns, Titans, Chargers) are relegated to a lower level and a good team comes and takes their place.

NFL would have so much more meaning and teams wouldn’t tank.

  19. thefatlazygamer says: Jan 4, 2016 11:24 AM

Change the draft back to rounds 1-3 all in one day. That was a grind but man it had a better flow and was fun.

    .
I didn’t see all the games, but credit should be given to the San Diego Chargers They were so decimated by injuries during their game at Denver that they had their punter and kicker going both ways. Yet, they fought valiantly until the end

I wouldn’t be shocked if Ozzie traded back for more picks but I’d love to see him get Ramsey or Treadwell. Instant impact players

  22. noleitup says: Jan 4, 2016 11:55 AM

Looks like my bucs still have a shot to get jalen ramsey.

  23. purplepeople1 says: Jan 4, 2016 11:59 AM

Haha don’t compare soccer to nfl. Teams and players don’t tank or I would say it’s rare. The titans winning another game or two isn’t doing anything for the fans either. Why not make some great draft picks and put a better team on the field come 2016

  24. radrntn says: Jan 4, 2016 1:09 PM

with the 14th pick in the 2016 NFL draft the Raiders select Myles Jack LB, UCLA

  25. tyelee says: Jan 4, 2016 1:25 PM

Unfortunately for those top teams their is NO Marcus Marito caliber QB coming out of college this year…

Maybe they’ll get lucky finding a good one in the 2nd round!

  26. johngaltx says: Jan 4, 2016 1:26 PM

They should let the worst team pick any player from the active rosters. Now that would be something to watch!

  27. rjpats says: Jan 4, 2016 1:55 PM

Except for the Titans, Jags and Bucs, all of the top 10 should be taking a hard look at QB. Especially the Cowboys and Ravens

Ahhhh soo nice seeing those niners back where they’ve been for what seems like 20 years minus 2-3 seasons and that’s picking top 10. They were applauded for having so much talent yet they can’t draft a player to help them sustain any success to save their lives. All those top picks finally played to their potential then they were either old or gone. And boom suddenly no one likes the gm and no niners fans remembered being bad for as long as they were bc it’s hard to remember 20 years of sucking.

Glad to see the niners drafting back in the top right 10 like usual..

NHL and NBA have issues with tanking. I don’t think the NFL has too many issues with tanking, or coasting when things are locked up.

CLE played hard against PIT yesterday. WAS played hard against DAL.

SD kept it close with DEN.

    SF even won.

Players that were sat in other games were usually well known to be banged up.

Sure some teams don’t bother like DAL, but that seems to be the exception and not the rule.

I think the Jags looked promising this year. If they get the pick right, they could make some noise next year.

Why would the cowboys and ravens who already have contracted franchise qb’s on their roster be looking at spending their top ten picks on another qb. Especially with this weak QB draft class

“Nice job Miami, your win yesterday exchanged the #5 pick for the #8 pick”

It was so worth it to see Pats lose home field advantage! YES!!!!

The draft should be a snake draft like people use in Fantasy drafting. Why are they rewarding teams that are no good and punishing playoff teams? Snake draft makes it more fair. It can be argued whether or not snake drafts are fair but you are not punishing teams for making it to the Super Bowl.

I’d like to know the % of players taken in the last five years in the top 3 rounds are still playing.

  33. coltcountrysteelerfan says: Jan 4, 2016 3:56 PM

I just think back after the Ravens blew the game against the Jags, all the Ravenites were saying…”hey at least we will draft ahead of them if our records are the same…just another thing they got wrong this season.

  34. joetoronto says: Jan 4, 2016 5:38 PM

One more draft for the Raiders and lookout, they’re gonna be good for a long time.

I love all the Ravens fans gloating about “how they knocked the Steelers out of the playoffs” last week.

No, what you actually did was knock yourselves out of the top 5. Nice going chumps!

    Ha ha ha.

Now enjoy watching the Steelers this Saturday.
