In recent years, NFL teams have shown a willingness to use talented collegiate defensive backs in a variety of roles on defense.

Players see time as corners, safeties and even linebackers depending on the situation, which makes versatility something to prize when evaluating draft prospects. Florida State gave Jalen Ramsey a head start on that kind of skill set over the last few years and his performance in a hybrid role has made him one of the top-rated prospects heading into the 2016 draft.

All that was left was for Ramsey to formally forego his remaining eligibility and enter this year’s pool. Ramsey did that on Tuesday by releasing a statement through the school.

“Today, after having in-depth discussions with my parents, my coaches and others whom I hold dear to my heart, I am announcing my decision to pursue my dream, forgo my senior year of football at Florida State and declare for the 2016 NFL draft,” Ramsey said.

In addition to starring on the football field at Florida State, Ramsey has also excelled as a member of the track and field team as a sprinter and long jumper.
