Three teams will interview Hue Jackson Sunday

AP

Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson will interview with the Browns, 49ers and Dolphins Sunday in Cincinnati, NFL Network’s Albert Breer reported Wednesday.

Jackson hopes he’ll be missing several hours of gameplanning Sunday. The Bengals play the Steelers in a wildcard game Saturday night and with a win will advance to play at New England on Jan. 16.

Per NFL rules, Jackson can interview even if the Bengals are still playing with permission from the Bengals.

Jackson, 50, was the Raiders’ head coach in 2011. He’s been with the Bengals since and in his second season as offensive coordinator.

The Browns also plan to interview Bengals defensive coordinator Paul Guenther Sunday.

As a Dolphins fan, this is the guy I want. Did great work in Cincy and did well in his first season in Oakland.

  2. getakluwe says: Jan 6, 2016 4:32 PM

Raiders should have never fired him.

Sorry Bengals fans – we saw what happened in Denver last year when Del Rio and Fox were both spending the week lining up their next coaching gigs. I don’t see how this doesn’t constitute a conflict of interest. The NFL ought to take a harder look at this IMO – it affects the integrity of the game.

I watched a few Bengals games and he is an excellent play designer and playcaller.

I remember thinking he would get his chance after that job he did with the Raiders but nope. Yet Jeff Fisher and Jim Tomsula get 40 million between them to spend on gel for their mustaches.

  5. dreadnok89 says: Jan 6, 2016 4:45 PM

thomsula is a patsy and jeff fisher is over 500 for career wins as a coach.

  6. bonniebengal says: Jan 6, 2016 4:45 PM

Dolphins would be his best bet. Browns and 49ers ownership = train wrecks.

Jay Gruden spent his playoff game showing off trick plays to use in his Redskins interview. I can’t wait…

  8. collectordude says: Jan 6, 2016 4:48 PM

Not convinced he’s head coaching material.

  9. tooz72 says: Jan 6, 2016 4:52 PM

your offense will be better, but your defense will be horrid, Raiders had the worst defense in their franchise history under Hue, they were 7-4 at one point and went 1-4 the rest of the way, he’s nothing as a head coach

  10. babyjesus69 says: Jan 6, 2016 4:53 PM

Hue has gone on record saying Kaepernick is the one that got away from him when drafting for the Raiders. Bet he goes there.

  11. 6ringsteelers says: Jan 6, 2016 4:55 PM

You really do have to give props to the Browns, 49ers and Dolphins for having the respect to wait until the Bengal’s season is over.

  12. idpfantasyfootball says: Jan 6, 2016 4:58 PM

Hue Jackson is definitely head coaching material! He has a brilliant mind for offense and knows how to lead a team. He had the Raiders pointed in the right direction before ownership set the franchise back by releasing him and hiring Dennis Allen…

I’d like to seem Hue take over the Browns and make them competitive, but agree that the Dolphins job would be the best fit for him.

  13. seabassfan says: Jan 6, 2016 5:00 PM

Of those 3 teams I think the Dolphins are A) the only one he’d want and B) the only one that would be a good fit with his coaching style. I’m assuming the Browns and Niners interviews are just to gain leverage in negotiating with the Fish.

  14. ohand16 says: Jan 6, 2016 5:03 PM

Obviously he is planning on his season being over Saturday night.

  15. fumblenuts says: Jan 6, 2016 5:08 PM

Dolphins SHOULD do EVERYTHING possible for him to NOT leave the building. He’s the type of coach Ryan Tannehill needs to get to the next level.

He might be a decent choice but that bizarre power play press conference in Oakland is hard to overlook.

The ONLY mistake Jackson made in Oakland was trading for Palmer… Hell, even Arizona should be thanking this man.

  19. joetoronto says: Jan 6, 2016 5:14 PM

He’s a snake in the grass and that’s why nobody offered him a job other than Mike Brown and the Bungels.

  20. araidersfan says: Jan 6, 2016 5:20 PM

From seeing Jackson first-hand with the Raiders I can say that he’s basically a hybrid of Rex Ryan and Chip Kelly. Like Ryan, he’s an attention-seeking buffoon who’s full of himself. Like Kelly, when Jackson gets the chance (i.e. a power vacuum) he’ll grab control over personnel decisions and wreak havoc on a roster. And no, he did not improve the Raiders because they had the same 8-8 record under Tom Cable the year before…but Jackson did manage to lose 4 of his final 5 games in 2011 and tried to dodge accountability by blaming the players.

Those who want Hue Jackson as their team’s next HC should be very careful of what they wish for.

  21. oldcracker says: Jan 6, 2016 5:30 PM

I’m a Browns fan, and under normal conditions, would love to have this man take over our team. However, with the current insane owner and his wife, leading the circus, I wouldn’t wish this on any decent, self-respecting football professional.

I believe the 49’ers would give Hue a better opportunity to rub the Raiders nose into the dirt. I know the Raiders will probably move to LA or San Antonio, but in the mean time it would be so gratifying to see him do that.

With Truckstop Jimmy Haslam, his wife, and the team’s bean-counting lawyer running the interview, it should be the “eye-opener” that Hue needs. Run Hue, run as fast and as far away from Cleveland, as you can. The inmates have taken over the asylum!

  22. mongo3401 says: Jan 6, 2016 5:32 PM

Miners will be his favorite. It’s a well known fact Tannenbaum is a jackwad and Hue Jackson is not going to out up with him or the clown circus that Miami has created in their ” multi tiered “‘FO BS. Tannenbaum can say what ever he wants but nothing is going to change down there. Jackson will take Kapernick and be successful With Tannehill he will go no where fast because after 4 seasons Tannehill is STILL a work in progress.

  23. joetoronto says: Jan 6, 2016 5:32 PM

Raiders were foolish for firing him. In the last 13 years they have had a losing record in 12 of them, his season was the only one that wasnt a losing record (8-8).

Then again, you cant expect a franchise that pathetic would be good at making decisions, either.

  24. demolition510 says: Jan 6, 2016 6:01 PM

He was talking crazy at thereby if the season and throwing players under the bus. That’s the only reason he got canned in Oaklamd. Oh well.

Man I can’t unsee George Foreman now

Cincy still thanking Oakland for Dre Kirkpatrick and Giovanni Bernard. Great trade!!!!

Gotta get the facts right! Tom Cable went 8-8 the year before Hue did. Huebert did not improve, he maintained the same record. Hue also had 4 games to play and only had to win 1 to get into the playoffs – lost them all!!
This is the reason Big Reg let him go. He couldn’t win the big game

Absolutely. I’d say it’s the reasons he ended up back in a coordinator job for a few years rather than in a head coaching gig. It’d also be questions number 1, 2, and 3 if I interviewed him. If he learned from that incident, good. If not… no thanks.

  28. boknowsall says: Jan 6, 2016 6:40 PM

According to Mike Silver, Hue would have won the Super Bowl by now had he stayed in Oakland. Never mind being over the cap with overpaid players, having no picks, and an aging roster.

Tom Cable went 8-8 thanks to an offense that ranked 6th in points scored. An offense coached by….Hue Jackson. Just stop. Hue’s fingerprints were all over both of those 8-8 seasons. The best seasons the Raiders have had in the last dozen years. Who knows what could’ve happened had the Raiders kept both Hue and Carson Palmer. The fact that Carson is playing so well only validates Hue’s decision to trade for him. They could’ve done big things, but the Raiders brass was too impatient.

    Good coach, great offensive mind.

But do not under any circumstances give him any personnel power whatsoever.

  31. nflfolly says: Jan 6, 2016 7:43 PM

Raiders have been atrocious and a pitiful team since Hue Jackson left and the clueless Mckenzie took over.
McKenzie after years of bungling still can’t get the Raiders to even one 8-8 season.

    ——————-
They went 8-8 when Huey was the OC, and 8-8 when he was the head coach. I liked his offense, but he couldn’t stay in his shoes. The beat writers called him “Hubris”. He claimed Al Davis offered him the GM job, but he turned it down to be the OC. When he was the head coach, they had Rolando McClain covering Calvin Johnson in a game they had to win to make the playoffs. He got exiled back to Cincy, and now somebody is going to find out if he has matured. I hope he does well.

  33. nomoreseasontix says: Jan 6, 2016 8:29 PM

Watched him up close with the Raiders and my opinion is that he’s a back-stabbing snake who rides on someone’s coat tails while he’s sticking the knife in. I’d guess that the real talent on the offense in Cincinnati is an assistant we don’t hear about. Hue takes the credit. Lets face it, there’s a reason he’s not a head coach right now.
For some reason he hasn’t gotten to Lewis yet.
    But it’s coming.

  34. boknowsall says: Jan 6, 2016 10:47 PM

What would have Hue done with a Raiders team that was millions over the cap and carrying 20 million in dead money in 2012 and 2013? The team needed to be blown up and built the right way…through the draft. Just as they are now. Good luck to Hue in his next HC job, but don’t tell me he shouldn’t have been fired.

  35. autumnwind999 says: Jan 6, 2016 11:01 PM

Hue did an amazing job with the Raiders. They had the 31st ranked offense in 2009. He came on in 2010 and they turned into a top-10 unit with Jason Campbell and Bruce Gradkowski splitting time at QB.
In 2011 Al wisely let Tom Cable walk. Cable’s contract was up and he was 9-19 with the Raiders before Hue, who would’ve been hired elsewhere if not elevated. Al died during that season. If he hadn’t, I have no doubt Hue would still be coaching the Raiders. We wouldn’t have wasted the 2012-2014 seasons and we’d be playing this weekend.
In that 2011 season the offense continued to play well with Campbell, who was a backup- caliber checkdown QB. McFadden was playing at an MVP caliber level and DHB was about a catch away from posting a 1,000 yard season. Campbell got hurt and we had to throw Carson Palmer in there off the couch mid-season. Palmer played well, but the defense collapsed down the stretch.
Hue had a crazy stretch of bad fortune that season, but did an A+++ job squeezing an 8-8 season out of that team, given the circumstances.

Rumor said to be that all teams interviewing Hue Jackson should do some serious character investigations prior to interviewing. In Oakland too many issues with staff players and outside contractors brought into camp. The guy is a true snake and there are text messages and emails floating around to prove these alleged allegations. This could blow up in his face sooner than later. NFL may need to get involved. In Cincinnati hes had personal issues and court appearances. Cincinnati looks good because of their defense.
