Sean McDermott to interview for Bucs job

After dumping Lovie Smith as head coach on Wednesday night, the focus quickly shifted to Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter as the top candidate for the job.

But Tampa Bay is at least kicking the tires of some other options for the job in the meantime.

According to Peter Schrager of FOXSports.com, the Buccaneers will interview Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott this weekend.

While Koetter certainly seems to be the favorite, McDermott wouldn’t be a complete surprise either. McDermott was an assistant on Andy Reid’s staff in Philadelphia while Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht was part of the player personnel department in the Eagles’ front office. The two were together for three years in Philadelphia before Licht left to join the New England Patriots in 2009.

McDermott is also drawing interest from the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants. His time spent with the Eagles would make him an obvious candidate in Philadelphia as well.

Wow. If Koetter wants to stay an OC for now and work with Jameis, this could be a great HC option.

I will wish McDermott luck with any HC gig, but he will be dead to me if he goes to the Bucs.

As a bucs fan….yes please. Gets McD and hope Koetter doesn’t get a HC job and stays.

Don’t do it, Sean!!!!! You’ll be jumping on another “carousel” similar to the Browns and they’ll fire you in 2 years!!!!!

Choose wisely and wait for a great opportunity with a team that will actually keep you around. Nothing against the Bucs, but their owners suck almost as bad as the Browns owners! And you deserve better!

I just wish you didn’t have to leave Carolina…
You’ve been the best…and deserve the best!

I’ll take Koetter over McDermott ever day of the week! I think Sean is a very good DC, but as a HC, I have me doubts. Perhaps the Bucs could hire him as the DC with he title of Assistant Head Coach.
