Gase expected to hire Vance Joseph as Dolphins’ defensive coordinator

New Dolphins head coach Adam Gase appears ready to hire his defensive coordinator.

Bengals defensive backs coach Vance Joseph will become the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator as soon as the Bengals’ postseason is over, Alex Marvez of FOX Sports reports.

This will be Joseph’s first job as a defensive coordinator. He’s previously coached defensive backs in Houston and San Francisco, as well as at Bowling Green, Colorado and Wyoming. Joseph was an option quarterback at Colorado in the 1990s and had a brief NFL playing career as a defensive back with the Jets and Colts.

The Dolphins are also planning to hire Matt Burke as linebackers coach, Clint Hurtt as defensive line coach and Jerome Henderson as defensive backs coach.

This should all go well, none of these coaches have experience in the new roles. If I had Ross’s money I’d burn mine!

If hiring a retread amongst former fired NFL coaches is not an attractive option for the Dolphins Search Committee, then up and coming Adam Gase looks like a great hire!

I see the glass on my table. It’s filled with KoolAde. I’m a die hard, long time, disappointed Dolphin fan. Look at that! My hand is moving steadily to the glass and I’m going to drink it all!

Now that I have, I can’t wait for the draft and… think next year we’re in the play-offs! lol, for real. We are! That KoolAde always tastes so good…

If he takes his QB coach from Chicago (and Denver) with him, Cutler and the Bears could be starting over…again.

    gase was hired?

  5. ed3557 says: Jan 9, 2016 12:50 PM

Vance Joseph is a great hire for them; he’s done an amazing job in Cincy

Dolphins poach another coach from the Bengals. In this case actually, two coaches.

  7. savethebs says: Jan 9, 2016 12:54 PM

Yeah they can’t get experience in those roles until someone hires them in those roles. I’d rather have a promising young coordinator than a failed retread head coach.

So he’ll be hired tonight then.

Absolutely a Great Hire for DC! Finally, the Dolphins get something right. He does a great job with Secondaries with weakness’ due to lack of complete talent and injuries. Lord knows the Fins have problems at LB, FS and CB. A guy with a plan including a backup plan can only help.

Hey, nothing else has worked in the last 10 years, give that young hungry aggressive blood a shot!!!!!!!

Wonder who someone with NFL HC experience (Shanahan/ Coughlin ) would have brought along. When you hire no names you get unknowns.

    Raider fan chiming in here

Defence has talent and needs a good DC to direct them to success.

Offense has talent and now a offensive minded coach who should get the most out of Tannehill.

If Gase is the right guy, Miami could be poised to battle NE for AFC East supremacy.

The Broncos asked permission to interview Vance Joseph for their DC job last year and the Bengals denied the request. He had worked with Kubiak in Houston. Lucky it worked out with Wade Phillips. So Joseph was commodity for DC job last year too.

Well I was all set to cancel Sunday Ticket after 20 tears of misery, gotta keep it for at least one more year.

  15. whodey420 says: Jan 9, 2016 1:55 PM

I’m hoping the Bengals don’t let him interview. If Paul Guenther gets a head coaching job, I want Vance Joseph to get the defensive coordinator job!

As db4life mentioned, the Bengals blocked him from getting the Broncos job.

What a train wreck. Entire team of inexperienced coaches lol.

From one Bengals secondary coach (Kevin Coyle) to another (Vance Joseph). Bengals coaches are very popular these days. Just goes to show what a great organization they’ve become. 6 playoff trips in 7 seasons will do that.

Henderson is the Cowboys DB coach who is interviewing with the Browns for their head coaching job (Rooney rule). Just seems odd he that he has excepted the DB of Miami job. In truth I do not think he is really wanted and they are looking a change there anyway…

Welcome to Miami….this dude at least looks like he can motivate people unlike like the past severals DC’s

  20. nouhoh64 says: Jan 9, 2016 2:23 PM

Vance is an excellent hire. Great communicator and his players respect him.

  21. rodge1 says: Jan 9, 2016 2:24 PM

As a Dolphins fan I hope Joseph is nothing like Coyle. Coyle wasted Cam Wake’s best years and made Miami’s defense worse each year.

  22. duanethomas33 says: Jan 9, 2016 2:26 PM

Remember, Cincy stopped Denver from interving him? He must be good… think Denver missed out with Phillips?

  23. huggybear2014 says: Jan 9, 2016 2:30 PM

Buffalo hires Ryan, a defensive mind.
NYJ hire Bowles, a defensive mind.
    Belichek… A defensive mind.

    Miami…another OC turned HC.

    Different results?

The Bengals coaching staff is going to be wiped out this offseason. I hope we can find enough quality people to replace those who leave.

  25. cdwains says: Jan 9, 2016 3:51 PM

The only way the Bengals let Vance go is if they know for sure Paul Gunther is staying put as the DC. If Gunther leaves Vance becomes the DC in Cincy. Don’t count your chickens Miami as Paul G has interviews lined up already.

Hey Lamar, listen up! Matt Forte, RB Chicago Bears, last two years. 484 carries in 29 games. Average 17 per game. 188 targets in 29 games. Average 7 per game. Hey Lamar, just sayin’.

  27. beachsidejames says: Jan 9, 2016 5:53 PM

Has to be an upgrade from the past three seasons.

  28. fanofpft says: Jan 9, 2016 6:06 PM

Yeah but Forte had been hurt.

  29. section441 says: Jan 9, 2016 8:16 PM

Oh goody. Philbin poached Kevin Coyle the DB coach from the Bengals and now history repeats itself. Sorry, just cant get excited about this. As a 34 year season ticket holder Im disgusted.

  30. fanofpft says: Jan 9, 2016 8:22 PM

Our we to now hope Pitt. wins to free up this coach to come on board?

  31. jpleeg2 says: Jan 12, 2016 11:38 AM

Former Chargers Defensive Line Coach Don Johnson is also in the running for a spot on the new staff.

  32. jpleeg2 says: Jan 12, 2016 11:39 AM

Let the Don Johnson back in Miami jokes begin…
