Burfict gave Ben the business on shoulder-injuring sack

As if Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict didn’t have enough stuff to worry about after last night’s game against the Steelers, here’s another.

Video has emerged online of Burfict deftly driving his knee into the right shoulder of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, after Burfict sacked him onto it.

Burfict’s illegal hit on receiver Antonio Brown already will be reviewed by the league office, and given Burfict’s history he could be suspended to start the 2016 season.

Regardless of whether he’s specifically disciplined for giving Ben the business after Ben was already on the ground, Burfict’s behavior won’t win him any brownie points at Park Avenue.

  14. Ferdinand says: Jan 10, 2016 2:24 PM

If they want to stop this behavior they need to start throwing players out of the game.

If a team ends up with 6 of their best players ejected after a fight or whatever – that’s their problem. And if they end up losing the game – well, that’s their own fault, too. The teams will either start taking care of business internally or they’ll not draft/trade for these guys.

You can also see him Start the Confrontation with Joey Porter at the end of the game. Google “What Started Joey Porter Bengals Conflict 2016 Wild Card”

You can see Porter was just walking with Brown off the field. Burfict takes a swipe at a Steelers’ trainer

  16. t8ertot says: Jan 10, 2016 2:25 PM

As a bengals fan I won’t deny that Burfict is dirty but Steeler fans need to get off their high horse. Steelers have been taking Bengals players out for YEARS. Their coaches are a joke with Porter running out on the field and Tomlin tripping players. But when they get a taste of their own medicine, the Bengals are the bad guys. Meanwhile the Steelers play “hard-nosed” classy football. Give me a freakin break. You reap what you sow

  22. forbesscot2004 says: Jan 10, 2016 2:30 PM

When the refs, the coaches and even the announcers are saying that a player is “out of control”, it’s blatantly obvious that they shouldn’t be on the field. That’s on the coach. Same as Beckham/Norman from a few weeks ago.

Now before you Bengals fans start sticking up for him, watch the video of his cheap shot on Max Williams last week…

  23. luckyarmpit says: Jan 10, 2016 2:31 PM

Calling that deliberate is kind of stretching it a little, isn’t it?

  24. freedomofspeechyesway says: Jan 10, 2016 2:31 PM

As a Ravens fan I’m still dumbfounded that a team could possibly be so dirty that I would actually want the Steelers to win, yet here we are.

  25. Deb says: Jan 10, 2016 2:32 PM

No, the Steelers aren’t saints. I’m a diehard Steelers fan and I’d never claim they’re saints. They ticked me off a few times last night. But I have never seen a Steeler take out a player, then stomp him while he was down in a deliberate attempt to cause him serious injury. Bengals fans have whined for 10 years over the injury to Carson Palmer in 2005, but Palmer himself said it wasn’t a dirty hit–and film shows it wasn’t a dirty hit. This guy tried to knock Roethlisberger out of the game. He tried to knock Brown out of the game. He succeeded in knocking Bell out for the season.

And I have never seen Steeler fans throw trash on an injured player being carted off the field. The film tells the story of the Bengals’ character.

  26. NYCTourGuy (Bucs fan) says: Jan 10, 2016 2:32 PM

I agree Burfict is a hothead but that “video” doesn’t show anything other than Vontaze trying to wrestle the ball from Big Ben.

  27. anpsteel says: Jan 10, 2016 2:34 PM

    6 games, reduced to 4.

Multiple and flagrant infractions with seemingly no awareness or consideration in regards to changing behavior.

  28. oruacat2 says: Jan 10, 2016 2:34 PM

    LOL!

If you want to criticize Burfict for trying to strip the ball from Ben after he was down, that’s legit.
But “drove his knee into his shoulder”?

    Laughable.

Steelers play dirty, and everyone outside of Pittsburgh and the bandwagon jumpers who’ve never set foot in PA know it. Their dirty play is calculated – they know the refs will only blow that whistle so many times, and on the few occasions they get caught, what’s 15 yards if you can take out the opposition player and put him out of the game?
That’s a fair trade from their perspective.

  29. steeltroll says: Jan 10, 2016 2:34 PM

By the way, not all Cincinnatians think it appropriate to throw trash at injured players being carted off the field.

  34. stoneydog1000 says: Jan 10, 2016 2:38 PM

The Bengals were 6-0 without him at the beginning of the season. As a Bengals fan, I think he hurts them more than he helps them. So suspend him, please.

  35. ihateduke says: Jan 10, 2016 2:39 PM

This guy is just a dirty player. He was pushing the limits the entire game. How appropriate for him to do something stupid at a critical point in the game to cost his team. It’s funny how Bengal fans are looking for someone else to blame. Regardless of the fact that Joey Porter was on the field, all Pacman Jones had to do was avoid pushing him. How hard is that?

  36. koenig61 says: Jan 10, 2016 2:39 PM

Nothing gets past video today. People need to realize everything they do is caught. There’s also video of porter walking off the field and Gilbert comes up behind him and chest bumps him then a group of bengals players surround porter and that’s when jones takes his swing. I’m certain porter wasn’t trading recipes with the bengals, but he didn’t hit touch or shove a player, as Gilbert shoved him. I feel badly for the bengals and their fans. I think the refs did what they could do without effecting the outcome of the game. The steelers were penalized more than then bengals. There was shoving chatting after every play by both teams. After the shazier hit bengals players rushed the field, refs didn’t call a penalty. After the brown hit porter was on the field, and even though there is a rule against it, it’s rarely enforced when there is a serious injury such as the one to brown. No one wants a ref to decide the outcome and I think that’s why the officials were hesitant to eject a player from either side. Once jones threw the punch I think the refs had no choice

  37. bonniebengal says: Jan 10, 2016 2:40 PM

@Deb: The crowd was enraged by the non call on the Shazier crown of the helmet hit on Bernard, and had had enough. People who were there also said there were a lot of things going on that you didn’t see on tv, which made the crowd mad the whole game.

Your team doesn’t need to stomp on them afterwards. They make calculated dirty hits and then get a slap on the wrist afterwards. Mitchell’s hit on Eifert was just as dirty, but no suspension.

  38. mlenenski says: Jan 10, 2016 2:40 PM

They could have run the clock down and kicked a field goal and won the game by taking three knees. Steelers would have burned all timeouts and need a touchdown to win with an injured quarterback. The coach lost the game for Cincinnati. He has absolutely no idea as to how to win a playoff game let alone a Super Bowl. Should be fired!

If you listen to Harrison’s entire statement, he says that as described to him by the league, it’s a penalty. By saying he doesn’t think it’s illegal, he’s telling you that he doesn’t agree with the rule…not that it was legal.

  43. scchamil says: Jan 10, 2016 2:46 PM

You guys sound like Jim Nantz…pay no attention to Gio Bernard’s motionless body…or the fact that the NFL just punished player because he couldn’t retain possession through unconsciousness…. but by all means let’s spend a bunch of time scrutinizing a relatively gentle form tackle because Burfict is involved. That was a tremendous game/changing fooball play by Burfict. For a guy who was out of control – ironic that he’s the one of the few guys to focus & make a play when everything was falling apart. If Ben doesn’t idiotically try to throw the ball as he’said going down (something he’said inexplicably done his entire career)…he doesn’t land awkwardly & doesn’t get hurt. That “extracurricular activity” you’re fraudulently hyping here is Burfict grabbing a loose ball. It was obvious from every angle shown during game & might have actually been a fumble. Shameful article.

Shazier’s shoulder to Bernards head was violent, but legal. Once Bernard take two steps, he’s no longer considered defenseless, and high hits are perfectly legal (only crown of helmet to helmet could be penalized–it was his shoulder that rocked Bernard’s head, otherwise Shazier would likely have dropped right next to him).

  45. oruacat2 says: Jan 10, 2016 2:48 PM

koenig61 – I appreciate your efforts at civility, I really do, but 1) Porter should’ve never been out there to begin with and 2) you’re missing what IMO was the most important hit of all: the entirely legal Williams hit on Wheaton that was flagged and led to a Steelers’ FG. Without that penalty the Shazier hit would’ve been far less controversial. By flagging that hit and then justifying the non-call with Shazier, these officials (and the announcers) lost control of this game and proved what Bengals players and fans have suspected for years: that dirty play by Pittsburgh gets excused. This game was just the most recent example, but it goes back to Kimo butchering Carson Palmer’s knee in 2005.

  46. larryfinfan says: Jan 10, 2016 2:48 PM

That isn’t a dirty play Bernard had the ball and was making a football move. Vontez hit brown when the ball was over his head and there was no point in even making contact there like that unless you were intentionally trying to hurt another player. Learn the rules buddy.

Everything you just said could be applied to Williams’ hit on Wheaton, but that one resulted in a 15-yard penalty.
That’s where the refs lost control and set the wrong tone for the rest of the game. The Shazier non-call was just icing on the cake at that point.

Burfict has a history of dirt bag plays behind him. Since freaking High School! No, this guy needs a year suspension. He’s not going to change with fines and mere 3 game suspensions.

The Cam Newton and Greg Olsen ankle twists from last year. Purposely injuring Bell, twice. Going after Roethlisberger ankles….this one pump chump isn’t playing hard. he’s playing like the turd he’s always been!

Go back and look at all the dirtbaginess he committed during college. Headbutting QBs, Grabbing linemens face mask and trying to twist their heads off. The late hits. He even managed to injure a camera man along the way, and that was totally avoidable. No sane person would stick up for him.

  77. Deb says: Jan 10, 2016 3:19 PM

    @Bonnie …

My one problem with Tomlin is lack of discipline. Our defensive backs were flagged 15 yards a couple of weeks ago for an idiotic end zone dance after an pick six–and they did the same thing last night. There’s no excuse for that! But that’s my same issue with Marv. The Steelers were flagged more than the Bengals in that game. Under the circumstances, the refs did a pretty good job of trying to hold things together. They made good and bad calls on both sides of the ball. But rather than talking about the ridiculous behavior of Burfict and Jones that cost his team the game, Marv came out and immediately started blaming the refs. He never holds his players accountable. It doesn’t matter how mad they were about Shazier. Professional athletes have to keep their head in the game.

  78. crusty14 says: Jan 10, 2016 3:23 PM

I also screamed when I saw Burfict add that little extra cheap shot with the knee when he had Ben on the ground. This is how he rolls, sneaking in that little ankle twist or knee shot to finish.

I’m glad now everybody else can see how cheap this shot was.

This game was just gross. As a fan of football, it was really hard to watch. Personal Fouls need to be reviewable. That hit on Wheaton was an excellent play, no reason to throw the flag. If you can’t handle making objective calls at full speed, don’t throw the flag. How Burfict and DeCastor were allowed to stay in the game after their scuffle into the endzone is beyond me. It would be one thing if it was early in the game, alright, I’m ok with seeing if cooler heads prevail, but it was just a continuation of what was already going on and it lead to “make-up” calls later in the game. The Porter situation was handled poorly as well, it should have been offsetting fouls, even ejections for both guys, that’s fair, regardless of who did what. Also, how did Touisaant(sp?) return to the game after concussion protocol? He was out for a handful of plays, no way a determination was made that quickly. The NFL has to be embarrassed, this game started out as an absolute thriller, every inch mattered. Then it devolved into an MMA match, thanks to the passive-aggressive officiating. I’m not saying one team or the other got the raw end of the deal, but it never should have gotten to Ben getting injured, PF with coaches on the field, etc.

Well the Steelers have done their share of cheap stuff to Brady and got away with it so who knows. Burfict doesnt seem to hide it as well as the Steers do I guess. Do it the pile like the Steelers and maybe he’d get away with it

I’m guilty, I did not watch the video before my last post. If anybody here can honestly say that anything in that 7 sec clip was “dirty”, you have no brain, seriously. I was thinking this video contained a player using his knee to apply pressure to the AC joint in his shoulder/clavicle area, that would be considered dirty. What I saw in that video was a guy get sacked, and the player sacked him attempt to rip the ball away and gained leverage by sticking his knee into his shoulder pad. His shoulder pad, people. His knee never contacted his body, if you don’t agree with that, you’ve never worn shoulder pads. This is honestly a non-story, and everybody passing this along should honestly be ashamed. When Football becomes less and less physical, it’s people raging about crap like this that causes it.

Don’t forget – in 2010 – the year the NFL waged their war against the Steeler defense – James Harrison was flagged after sacking Jason Campbell for unnecessary roughness. The referee explained over the mike that he “came down on the QB with the full weight of his body.” Despite the fact Harrison but his arms out to break his fall. I remember things like that when it is overlooked the rest of the time.

If the same standard was held today Burfict should have been flagged for the same thing against Big Ben.

I keep hearing this from Bengals fans. It’s simply not accurate. This is nothing wrong with staff being on the field during dead ball periods.

My assessment is that the zebras favoritism for the squealers, caused the game to get out of hand.

The Bengals wanted to get even for all the cheap shots and fouls committed by the Squealers. How many times did Shazier lead with his head and didn’t get called. I saw one instance near goal line where two Squealers body slammed a Bengal, the zebra watched it, and didn’t say nothing.

The worst thing you can do is make one team feel like they are being cheated. Which by the way, was my assessment too.

Mike Munchak pulled on Reggie Nelson’s hair. Joey Porter was illegally on the field to antagonize Adam Jones, who pushed him and drew a foul which should have let the referees know a coach was on the field, and that should have been an easy penalty to throw on Porter (who admitted he was antagonizing and will get fined.) The helmet to helmet from Shazier that knocked Bernard out of the game was a much more targeted hit than Burfict’s. I’m no Bengals fan. They were immature and dirty. The Steelers were moreso. Marvin Lewis gets criticized for not having control of his players but Tomlin gets a pass for what he and his coaches do.

  117. billsfan1 says: Jan 10, 2016 5:05 PM

And is there anybody that really think pacman would stand a chance against Porter? I mean with out guns and scrip clubs involved?

  118. enoughofthatalready says: Jan 10, 2016 5:10 PM

Bengals and their fans are a disgrace to all pro sports. Bengals players were instigating the entire game. Burfict was staring down the Steelers sideline waiting for something, Pekoe came off the sideline with his raincoat to bump a Steelers player, and the fans were cheering injuries. Porter is allowed to come out on the field and he was probably jabbering but there is no excuse for Gilberry hitting Porter from behind and then the fiasco that ensued. I cannot believe that people actually thing the Burfict hit on Brown was clean. He clearly squared up his shoulder and hit Brown in the head. Steelers may not win next week but at least the Bengals lost.

  119. jmc8888 says: Jan 10, 2016 5:16 PM

Burfict ruins teams and seasons. Did it at ASU, doing it in Cinci.

Here’s Burfict. Sack on 1st down…Force fumble (not recovered) on 2nd down…penalty for 1st down on 3rd down. Field goal or momentum TD after.

Worse yet, his antics help snowball it, so other guys then get penalties.

He has a massive propensity for getting after the play dumb penalties, or near the opposing team sidelines, and of course… the cheap shots.

Since this happens so often, and in such a crazy fashion it rubs off on their teammates, making them play tight and emotional and they also make dumb plays. He’s the catalyst.

His antics basically cost Erickson his job at ASU. Burfict lost games for ASU this way many times.

Welcome to the Burfict-zone Cinci, as long as he’s on your roster, this can happen at ANY time.

If you followed him in college, you know this is SPOT ON.

Guy is a psycho. A negative influence on his teammates by creating his sideshow. Untrustworthy. Tends to screw up the worst in the biggest moments.

Lewis takes heat because this was WELL known, among OTHER faults he has, and yet Lewis…
    a) brought him onboard
    b) knew his history and still let all of this develop in yesterday’s game

The only way he can show he learned ANYTHING, is if he doesn’t throw Lewis under the bus like he did Erickson. Let’s hope Burfict takes the blame for his idiocy this time.

I feel bad for Cinci, they’ve just been Burfict’ed

  120. openfieldtackle says: Jan 10, 2016 5:27 PM

Bengal fans are frustrated and totally understandable.

  121. cruisekid says: Jan 10, 2016 5:28 PM

As a Bengal fan, there is no excuse for Burfects hit, it was a penalty an he should be suspended. But how about some objectivity from some of you Steeler fans. I watched it again on Nfl now, Shazier,s head was down completely and the crown of his helmet hit Bernard in the face mask. Instead of Steelers ball it should have been first down on the Steeler 7.

This is a penalty regardless of how many steps he took.

Another remark is that Burfect hurt Bell twice with dirty hits. First, Bell was hit by Reggie Nelson last year on a perfectly legal hit and while Burfect has had a history I will not in anyway try to justify, his hit on Bell the year was perfectly legal and in no way dirty.

Finally, Joey Porter left the bench to confront Bengal players on the field. As a coach he should be held to a higher standard and help calm things down. He most certainly should have been penalized. Let’s not for get Munchecks classless striking of a Bengal player.

  122. steelcurtainn says: Jan 10, 2016 5:33 PM

I mean, Roethlisberger was down, on his back, with Burfict on top of him, driving his knee into his shoulder (or, as you say, his shoulder pads). What would he have accomplished by getting the ball? BTW – the hit was far from legal. The ball was poorly thrown and obviously uncatchable so its a PF to hit the receiver. Plus it was incredibly stupid. There was plenty of time to pull up and avoid the hit. thats all he had to do and the game is over and his team advances in the playoffs. That’s what would have been smart football. We will never know now. The fact is that most of the Bengals are good tough pro football players and assets to the game. They played a heck of a season and had it crashed to a halt by two boneheads in their midst. Who knows what would have happened if those guys had kept their cool and had the common sense to…do nothing. Yes that’s all they had to do was ‘do nothing’. Burfict pulls up short on the uncatchable ball and they win. If Jones has the sense to just stand back and let Porter finish earning a penalty (that would have made a FG hopeless) they win. But they didn’t ‘do nothing’ and it cost the Bengals the game so we will never know.

You haven’t won a playoff game in 25 years and that isn’t going to change this year.

    Who Dey!

  143. zigthepatsfan says: Jan 10, 2016 10:25 PM

So you have no facts Ziggy…. Not a surprise!
In case you can’t tell. I am a die hard Steeler fan trolls!

Oh I can tell. Who else would deny the Steelers are dirty and demand proof? In all fairness it’s more the coaches now than the players, which is actually worse. Also probably explains why your D stinks now. Keep throwing those stones though, always amusing

Watching the game again and I have to say the Bengals just suck. Steelers third series of the game. First play. 1-10. 9 yard run. At the end of the play after the whistle has blown Maualuga shove Wallace and knock him over. No flag. Play six of the series. 1-10. 9 yard run. After the play is over Dunlop grabs Todman throws him to the ground. No flag. Ref #107 just argues with Dunlop a little. Cheap shots that should have been called early and were not.

The truth is with Typical bengal fans like bonnie bengal they would try to back up and justify burfict and pacmans antics. These two clowns could walk out there with razor blades cutting up the opponent and a typical bengal fan would argue that they did it because the kicker from the opposite team kept completing 46 yd attempts. Dumb and just no sense in showing the facts when it’s broadly in their faces.

Just watched the end of the game again. It is a MYTH that Joey Porter was out there antagonizing or cursing at the Bengal players. If you watch the replays there were 7 men from the Steeler sidelines out on the field. And Porter was one of them. If you watch the replay you can see Burfict come over and talk to Porter. It appeared to be a casual and unheated conversation. Brown is helped up and Burfict walks past Porter and pats Brown on the back. Burfict is sort a pushed away by Steelers trainer Norweg who is annoyed that Burfict is in his face. When Burfict is pushed away by Norweg his arm/hand backhands Porter in the face. Porter doesn’t see what initiated the backhand to his faces and says something to Burfict. Then Gilberry walks up behind Porter and body-bumps him. A couple of officials come running over to separate the growing crowd of players and then Jones comes charging in tries to run over some refs.

Goodall is privately pleased. These things drive up ratings, drive up publicity, and he gets to be the good guy by pretending to punish dirty players. But the failure to eject any players during games tell us the true story, he doesn’t want the spectacle to be diluted by ejecting players. It’s all a sham. Short of getting out a knife and driving it into Roethlisberger’s shoulder, we’ll just get the usual meaningless fine or short suspension, but nothing that will send a message to dirty players.

Burfict is mostly trash just the same as this article’s claim about giving Ben the business on that sack. One a stupid player and another a very stupid and irresponsible claim.

  149. candrwells says: Jan 11, 2016 8:37 AM

For the Bengals fans, the hit by Shazier on the RB was illegal, and I’m sure he’ll get fined for it, but it was in the process of making a tackle.

Burfict’s only intent was to take Brown’s head off. There was no tackle, hell, the ball was long gone before he even aimed at Brown’s head.

Joey Porter will, I’m sure, be fined for being on the field… though if you ever watch when a player is seriously injured, many times coaches are surrounding the player. His fine will be deserved, but it may be the first of it’s kind for the same action.

None of that excuses Jones’ action at that time.

The actions of the Steelers will no doubt get attention from the league offices, but those aren’t why the Bengals lost. That blame lays squarely on the Bengals.

It’s a very strange day when I am liking Troll Tebow’s posts.

  151. patsfanscryalot says: Jan 11, 2016 9:56 AM

Porter was no way involved with assistance to brown he was not over there with him. He parked himself in the steelers huddle again a d coach in a offensive huddle strategically across fromm burfict in others he showed no care for brown all he was there for was to chirp at the bengals and when brown went to leave the field porter was not at his side giving any assistance to him he was engaged with the Begala already at that point that was his goal. Also you have coach munchak pulling hair you have Tomlin tripping people in another game. Time and time coaches of the steelers getting involved where they don’t belong real classy

Think it was Troy again caught twisting Brady’s ankle in the pile in the same game…This is all google-able but I’m not making it up, your team is one of the dirtiest out there…Not being a hater, got absolutely nothing against the Steelers really but facts are facts

  153. patsfanscryalot says: Jan 11, 2016 10:37 AM

Brusci and harrison were dirty as players like Joey porter. Porter is a coach where talking about the coaches on the field getting involved where they don’t belong. Brusci and harrison never did anything like that as a coach

All of the comments claimin there was nothing blatant, are a true testament of ignorance, willful or otherwise. He is on the ground, lifts his leg, rotates up and around, allowing himself to intentionally (and very blatantly) drive his knee down onto Ben’s shoulder. I mean, it doesn’t get much more blatant than that… Until later, we he takes another incredibly blatant cheap shot (this time to the head) of Brown.
It is my understanding that this is his M.O. as well, which makes it baffling that he is even in a professional league.
And who cares what other teams or canvases have done, that’s not what we are talking about. Plus, I have never, ever, ever seen a fantasy throw trash at a player whom one of their players had just intentionally injured. Pure trash.

  155. twault says: Jan 11, 2016 11:23 AM

If the Tebowedoutoftheplayoffs guy is not trashing the Steelers, then you know the Bungholes must have really been out of control. That being said, there were some bad calls/non-calls. The Steelers weren’t innocent by any means, but the Bengals were downright ridiculous. The refs should have taken charge, ejected Munchak and Burfict early. I think that would have set the tone.

    @patsfanscryalot

Apparently links can’t be posted, google What Started Joey Porter Bengals Conflict 2016 Wild Card and watch the video.

Porter is walking behind the trainers helping Brown off the field. Burfict walks past Porter and pats Brown on the back. Burfict is sort a pushed away by Steelers trainer Norweg who is annoyed that Burfict is in his face. When Burfict is pushed away by Norweg his arm/hand backhands Porter in the face. Porter doesn’t see what initiated the backhand to his faces and says something to Burfict, but everyone is calm. Then Gilberry walks up and bumps Porter from behind, instigating. A couple of officials come running over to separate the growing crowd of players and then Jones ignorantly tries charging at Porter through 3 officials.

  157. concretejimmy52 says: Jan 11, 2016 6:34 PM

Burfict will get suspended for four games. Ravens won’t play them until week five.

  158. tonebones says: Jan 13, 2016 7:17 AM

I’d just throw Burfict out of the league. Also, Roethlisberger should have gotten rid of the ball in that situation. There’s no way you take a sack on that play.

  159. chaffee5355 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:56 PM

The guy lost control and it was obvious that he turned to the dirty side of the game trying to cause harm, at any cost, to anybody he ran into.
