Missed field goal sends Seahawks to Carolina

Getty Images

The Vikings gave up their nine-point lead in the fourth quarter and were down to their final chance to grab it back after forcing a punt with less than two minutes to play on Sunday afternoon.

A pass interference penalty on Kam Chancellor was followed by a 24-yard gain on a pass to Kyle Rudolph, who shrugged off a tackle attempt by Chancellor to get that far down the field. Three Adrian Peterson runs later, the Vikings brought on Blair Walsh for a 27-yard field goal that would win the game.

The spirit of Gary Anderson could have been in the air, a memory of Richard Sherman nearly blocking a previous kick may have entered Walsh’s mind or maybe it was having the laces in (although Walsh made two other kicks with the ball set up that way), but something caused him to hook the kick wide left. The miss means the Seahawks are on to Carolina as 10-9 winners in a game that won’t be going on their highlight reel.

It was the fourth time that the team has rallied from at least nine points down in the playoffs under Pete Carroll, but this was a case of surviving and taking advantage of opportunities on a day when very little went right. The biggest of the opportunities they grabbed was when Chancellor stripped Adrian Peterson of the ball in the fourth quarter to create a turnover that the Seahawks turned into a game-winning field goal. The other big play of the fourth for Seattle came when a bad snap forced Russell Wilson to scramble long enough to find Tyler Lockett for a 35-yard gain.

Wilson ended the day 13-of-26 for 142 yards, a touchdown and an interception and the Vikings defense did all you could ask for from a team trying to win a playoff game. The offense wasn’t quite up to that level, struggling to move the ball for the majority of the afternoon and punting twice after Peterson’s fumble in the fourth.

The Vikings had just 183 yards of offense overall on the day and employed a conservative game plan heavy on runs and short passes on that side of the ball. It made for a sluggish effort, albeit one that matched with the defense’s performance to give the team a chance to win in the final seconds.

Walsh missed, though, and it is the Seahawks who get another chance to show they are capable of a better performance while trying to advance to a third straight NFC championship game.

  1. That kick didn’t look right, it didn’t look like a miss to me. I hope I’m wrong, but something smells fishy.

The NFL is full of game manager QB’s now and Bridgewater is one of the better ones, he’s not capable of carrying his team to victory though when the chips are down.

I can’t stand the Seahawks, but they’ll beat the Panthers easily.

  2. During your post game interview you did not praise the almighty for the miracle he bestowed upon you, Russell. He tells me that, for your indifference, he will show you no favor in Carolina next week.

  3. Adrian Peterson or home field advantage. I don’t know which one is more overrated. 30 yards on 20 carries and the game changing fumble? Really?

  4. The futility of being a Vikings fan lives on. Why can this team never win a game that matters? It’s just sickening. Thanks for a rotten feeling offseason Blair Walsh!

  5. This is what happens when you run an ultra conservative offense the whole season and game. You put your season on the foot of a kicker. You never trust a kicker and this is why. They have no one to blame but themselves. Can’t leave Seattle in the game while you play Teddy ball… aka RUN, RUN, PASS, PUNT.

  6. Like Cincinatti, the Vikings blew a won game.

God these teams just cannot flourish under pressure which is why we have the same five teams or so winning for the last decade.

  7. Vikings played well, but if you want to play big boy football you need a serious upgrade at the QB position. Teddy can’t throw the deep ball, gets lots of short passes knocked down, has no pocket presence. I would say he’s a poor man’s Andy Dalton.

  8. That’s a really rough way to lose a game. I thought they had it in the bag. They’ll probably be in the playoffs next year because they slowed down the Seahawks for most of the game. Devastating lost.

  9. Absolutely pathetic, as I’ve come to expect from the Vikings. If Norv Turner returns next year, I will not watch one single game. Clueless idiot has been predictable 18 weeks in a row!!

  10. Wait for it, wait for it……Hahaha. So much for “nobody wants to play us”. Unfortunately for Vikes fans, the game still needed to be played.

  11. I was hoping for a stadium collapse…. but this was a close second as an outcome. Both teams are awful.

  12. Absolutely brutal. The Vikings fans behind the goal post epitomized stunned-disbelief. As a Jets fan I offer no sympathy to playoff losers. The bigger the meltdown, the better.

  13. So you extend Walsh’s contract and continue to employ a RB who literally places the ball on the ground at every opportunity in the 4th quarter of big games? As a Vikings fan of 24 years I have to say we deserved this.

  14. tough break for the Vikes. All in all they played better than the Hawks did for most of the game. Walsh is normally automatic so I imagine he’s going to have a long offseason to think about it.

    – Hawks fan

  15. It looked like the Seahawks played down to their competition today and I’m suprised it was that close.

To quote all of the Viking trolls after GB lost to Seattle in the playoffs last year: “EPIC CHOKE!”

    #missed chip shot FG
    #Zero SuperBowl Championships Ever

  16. My condolences Vike fans. Regale in the season. You got the NFC North and outplayed the Seahawks till the last minute. As a Packer fan I know how lucky the Seahawks are however they are coached up to take advantage of breaks. They had nothing to do with that missed FG though. Now I get to go through my own misery for the next three hours. Hang in there

  17. unbelievable…. when i saw where the ball was placed for the final kick…. I said here it goes… walsh is going to miss… oh well. Great season, next year they will be even better. Great JOB ZIM!

  18. Where you at now @arani1985 aka wisconsin’s fav son….lolololololololololololololol….your NFC North championship means nothing. #choke #gocryyourselftosleep #greenbay still owns the division

  19. HAHAHAHAHAHA I KNEW IT!!!!!! The Vikings ALWAYS choke! The spirit of Gary Anderson was with them today. Oh, and the Panthers will beat the Seahawks 38-10.

  20. Packer fan here, and I’m not going to kick a team when they’re down. Yes, it was a heartbreaking choke, but we’ve all been there. Vike’s had a good season. Congrats.

  21. By my count, this is the 2nd playoff game that Adrian Beaturson has choked away with his fumbles.

Maybe he shouldn’t go on ESPN and tell them that there are no Seahawks who can stop him.

    23 carries/45 yards

Of course that was after rushing for 18 yards the first time.

    #FRAUD
    #NOTEVENCLOSETOTHEGREATESTRBOFALLTIME

  22. First Tony Romo’s botched hold and now this. The Seahawks have some kind of luck in WildCard games.

Personally, I know some Vikings fans that will swear it was the Packer’s Football God that blew that kick wide left.
PFT Poet, et al, is crying himself to sleep right now.

Well, it’s on to Carolina and Russell and the O, we better hope that the weather was the reason the offense sucked today. Russell missed two long open TD’s by under-throwing by 5 yards each, not typical.

  23. Since the Vikings trolls will be MIA until the Packers lose, be it today, next week or next season, this is for the REAL Vikings fans: Your team played a very good game today for the most part. That defense is better than I ever thought they’d be. The offense struggled, but it was against the Seahawks. Good luck next year (except for two particular games).

  24. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

There was some luck for NE in the SB last year regarding the last play. Seattle got some luck today.

It’s playoff football in very cold weather that affected both teams, regardless of what some Minnesotan’s think.

Minnesota should be back in the playoffs next year.

  25. 1 pm game on the East Coast spells doom for west coast teams. Factor in they’re playing the Panthers and it won’t be much of a game.

  26. I have a pretty good feeling that walsh isn’t feeling to good about his job security right about now…

It’s either that, or the good feeling i’m getting from being at Choice!

  27. I always wonder how my Vikings can choke away a game and every year they seem to show me another way to do it. Seattle, merry Xmas. You’re damn lucky Walsh just became the biggest choke artist in nfl history…27 yard field goal. This is why Viking fans like myself never believe in this team. They will always be chokers. They’ll never win a Super Bowl…and what’s too bad is playing outside like this gave them a huge advantage. Next year they are back indoors where the home filed advantage is gone.

  28. Before that kick I was thinking of the cowboy Seahawks playoff game where Tony Romo fumbled the snap and got tackled. Now I’m not a vikings or Seahawks fan, but how did he miss that kick??

  29. Adrian Childbeaterson was in fine form.

I posted the other day that Vikes have been bottom feeders for so long that it wouldn’t change this weekend.

  30. For many years I suffered thinking the Raiders were a cursed franchise.

After seeing this weekends games I realize two teams are more unfortunate.

    The Browns dont count.

  31. My hat’s off the the Seahawks, they never gave up and squeaked it out. I’m happy to see the Vikings playing up to their competition. When they’re healthy, they can provide a challenge for any team. They’re VERY young and, hopefully, will only get better in the years to come.

  32. How can a receiver draw an interference penalty when THEY initiate the contact and run into the defender? Of course it helps to flail your arms around….

  33. Seattle’s last 3 playoff games. Miracle win, heart-breaking loss, miracle win. Crazy.

I feel bad for Blair Walsh but the kick wasn’t even close.

  34. As a viking fan, there is one thing I can always count on from the Vikings. Finding new ways to lose games! Trolls can get their jokes in now, but we will back next year(Hopefully without Walsh and AP).

  35. I was honestly rooting for the Minnesota Vikings today.
I was hoping this team would represent the NFC North with dignity and pride.
Unfortunately it turned out to be another one and done choke job for the Heidis.
    I’m so disappointed in you.

  36. To all the real Viking fans out there like me. That was a hard loss to take, but nowhere near some Ive been through. I love me some Zimmer, he coaches to win instead of coaching not to lose( Frazier) . The vikes were playing with 5 rookies out there today, and all contributed. Teddy did his job at the end as that is his best attribute. Nothing the trolls can say to get me down, as all know Vikings outplayed Seahawks today and this year far exceeded my expectations

  37. This one stings. Another classic in a long line of disappointments for this 46 yr old Viking fan. It will make that eventual Superbowl victory that much sweeter. Just hope I’ll still be alive when they get it.

    SKOL

  38. I don’t get Walsh. He is solid on the long kicks, but is highly suspect on the shorties. Dang it. Vikes had this game won. (Also, the only reason Seattle was because of a broken play. Dang it again)

    —————————————–

Typical childish troll. More worried about gloating over another team’s loss than their own supposed “favorite” team kicking off in 10 minutes.

  40. The Vikings are pathetic!

What a waste of a playoff spot, that team has a bust QB that can’t make a play to get his team on the board and they rely on a kicker that actually made 3 of 4 FGs! The child abusing RB fumbles and again that bust QB can’t make a play to get his team on the board with a TD. The Vikings didn’t belong in the playoffs and we saw why today. What a Joke.

  41. Sadly many will blame Ray Finkle (Blair Walsh)….this is on the holder….Laces out. Vikings fans should be thanking the kicker; if it wasn’t for him scoring all your teams points, y’all would have laid a “0”. Where was Teddy, AP, and the offense?

  42. The Vikings executed that game perfectly. It was a clean game. No bad calls. It only took another Peterson fumble to doom them. He has bad karma. Vikings need to cut him now. McKinnon is Better anyways. He doesn’t dance behind the line of scrimmage like Peterson. Peterson always is trying to hit a grand slam, every single play, when really, all they need is a single. So what happens? Peterson fumbles and strikes out in the 9th.

  43. Vikings can look forward to next year. I was pulling for them, as a North Division representative. Zimmer has done a terrific job. They did just enough to win. Peterson and his overrated salary should go. You’re paying for his ego.

  44. Good game. Tough watching that last kick. Thought we had ’em. Would have been one hell of an upset, way to play hard to the end, Vikings. It was one hell of a surprise season for this fan.

  45. So no one is gonna get on the Vikings for blowing a 9-0 lead going into the 4th quarter How about AP’s fumble after Seattle scored their TD? Vikings choked, period.

  46. Madden 101

    1. Never take points off the board.
    2. If you’re playing for field goals, you’re playing to lose.
    3. Never trust a kicker with the game on the line.

  47. Wow thats a shame. It’s not all on Walsh, they put up 9 points at home but damn that kick was a gimme and their defense totally dominated Wilson.

it would have been good if the goalposts were 25 feet to the left
    ——–
    😂😂😂😂😂😂

  49. There is no QB anywhere, who scoops the ball off the carpet in those conditions and makes the play @DangeRussWilson makes to Lockett. Nobody!

Bridgewater did everything for the Vikings except, the kick the winning FG. Tough loss.

  50. The laces weren’t the problem, the plant foot should be about 6 inches from the football, Walsh’s plant foot was about 2 inches from that football. Even if the laces were perfect, he misses that kick.

  51. Colts fan here.
This game was great. Minnesota has great things going for them now and later. Seattle is barely getting by but both teams had stout defenses. At least this wild card ended in good fashion unlike Pittsburgh vs Cincinnati.
All in all, congrats to the vikings and seahawks. Great game

  52. As a panther fan, none of the potential matchups had me worried, but after seeing the Seahawks flail up and down the field today, I’ve never been more confident that we will absolutely dismantle them. Can’t wait to see you next week, Seattle.

  53. I think that one has to hurt Vike fans more than our loss last year in the SB. Well played game Vikes D, but now it’s time for Go Hawks!!

  54. Season is over for the Vikings. They did better than I thought they would this year. I had figured on *MAYBE* a wild card shot. The team as a whole is definitely looking up. Hold your heads high Viking fans, the Vikings did what 24 other teams couldn’t do, we won the division!

Vikings did better than many thought we would, especially the fans of a certain team to the east who shall remain nameless

    coughcoughcoughGBcoughcoughcough

Walsh may have choked when the game was on the line, but there is a HUGE difference in one player choking on wild card weekend vs an entire team doing the same in the NFCCG!

  55. All of you praising the missed kick are the same people who said Seattle would pound the Vikings.

It definitely sucks, but the vikes played far better than any of you losers thought.

Now, let’s watch how the packers do against the lowly redskins.

  56. That is a tough way to end the season. Vikes played good D but for some reason luck was on the Seahawks side again. I think for most, the Vikings surpasse expectations this season. Now they just gotta build on it. When next years schedule comes out I fully expect a Packers/Vikings game to end the year again. This rivalry is in full force!

    GO PACK GO!!

  57. Packer fan here,I was hoping for a Vikes win today, didnt happen but what a great game,I was impressed with the way the Vikes played. It will be good for my team to go up against great competition next year,,only makes it a better game

  58. Wow! So far, EVERY playoff game has involved a complete implosion of one kind or another. I’ve never seen anything like it.

  59. Earlier this year Zimmer actually gave the opponent in overtime the ball first, because kicking in that direction is a nightmare. Most likely why Carol went for 4th down plays instead of field goals when they were in range for long ones during the first half. Still though. That kick one that should have been made.

  60. Walsh joins Gary Anderson in the lores of choke jobs by Vikings kickers. All those shanked extra points came back to haunt them. Same range.

  61. nothing to gloat about here . . sometimes you get lucky, and say thank you.

knew it was going to be a tough game, disappointed our offense couldn’t close it out when it had multiple chances to do so. but it was a day for defense. good game, tough way to lose it.

    ———

Stay tuned you are about to learn something. This game was played in zero degrees. It was not conventional by any means. Next week the Hawks will look much different I am sure.

  64. Thoughts and prayers sent to the Minnesota players and fans in attendance. What a game! Yea, missed FG, but I’m speechless….you played EXTREMELY TOUGH! Keep your head up PROPS!

  65. Laces are just part of it…the holder was wearing gloves so he couldn’t spin the ball properly. But that ball was going wide from the git go.
Nobody will buy Walsh or the holder a beer for the rest of their lives.

  66. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that Walsh saw the kick all the way. And that, the look-up, is a problem in kicking as it in in golf. I bet he never saw his foot contact the ball. Eyes were up. Ugly as sin.

  68. Wow, so yesterday’s theme of the aholes/Rooneys (PIT) winning continues into today with the SEA win. YAWN.

If that holds true (with a wink to the NFL upholders of integrity), I’m thinking NE gets shafted next week vs. KC and the haters will be OK with that (because, crooked or not, what will the children think?)

I just realized I must dumb that down a bit. Better than the Packers.

  70. Great game to watch. I had no dog in this fight but can see why these two teams deserved to be in the playoffs. As the announcer said, you can’t practice a pressure three foot putt to win the Masters and you sure as hell can’t practice a field goal with that pressure. My hats off to both teams. Now, if the Eagles ever sign a head coach maybe we can be there in ten years.

  71. AP has played five playoff games. He has rushed 116 times for 412 yards, a 3.55 average. And while he has five TDS, he also has 3 fumbles. And they’re 1 – 4 in those games.

    AP? More like PU!

  72. I hate the Seahawks, but that PI call was nonsense. Rudolph charged into Chancellor and then threw his arms up in the air and staggered around. If that were an NHL game, Rudolph would have penalized for flopping.

  73. C’mon, give Walsh a break. It was his great effort making three previous field goals in brutal weather conditions that put Minnesota in position to win. Missed field goals is a part of NFL history. See Buffalo kicker Scott Norlin.

Congrats to Minnesota for a great season. Absolutely no one gave them a chance to win their division.

The Seattle offense that appeared today was the offense that plagued their team in the first third of the season. Minnesota defense kept heat on Wilson all day!

  76. Said it in an earlier post- how can the Hawks get so lucky in the playoffs year after year? 4th Quarter against GB last year, miracle catch in the SB last year, now multiple times in this game. Hopefully the luck runs out next week…

On a side note- Bengals and Vikings fans get robbed this year

  77. “This crap is SO rigged in order to set up the Panthers-Seahawks rematch”

Not sure how a gift PI call that moved the Vikes along and their kicker missing could be called “fixed” in favor of Seattle.

“Oh where oh where is pftpoet???”

Currently composing a rant that will claim the league cheated the Vikings in about 17 different ways and that the game was totally fixed.

This will include claiming that the league planted thousands of fake fans that all exhaled as hard as they could simultaneously to create a fake gust of wind to make the kick miss.

  78. Still thawing out from that game. Congrats Hawks fans, thought we had you there. Still proud of my team and all the fans that froze off their posteriors with me today. How Walsh could make all those long FGs and miss the short one is beyond me.

    _________

Both teams deserve to be there. Otherwise change the rules whereby 27 yard FG’s are automatic with the game on the line … or how about no fumbles allowed when your team is ahead and has the ball in the opponents territory with under 2 minutes and while your at it maybe 2nd and goal in the Superbowl should be an automatic touchdown and interceptions are not allowed.

  83. Good game, Viking fans.
That team will continue to make you proud in the year’s to come. Unlike the Packers who can’t face the fact that their best days are potentially behind them.
For those of you claiming how lucky Seattle’s been these past years…you show your ignorance of the game and aren’t taken seriously. And your teams probably stopped playing meaningful football weeks ago.
For you Carolina fans spouting off about next week…get your Big Boy pants on. You can’t pipe in subzero weather.
If you aren’t nervous, you should be.

  84. All the analysts are saying they feel bad for Blair. Really? Having to live with that for the rest of his life is far less than the punishment he actually deserves. One job.

  85. That was a very good display of defense from both sides. I had to mock all the cold weather nonsense, but I have a lot of respect for that team and coach.

If it’s any consolation, the Pack are going down next. Rodgers sacked for a safety….

“Vikings will lose their last 6 games.”

“Vikings will get crushed by Seattle.”

Vikings lose 10-9 in the playoffs:

Packer trolls: See i told you so!

Good win Seahawks fans. Enjoy it.

  87. Great game. While as a Viking fan it’s disappointing, to play at this level after being 3-13 just a short time ago is incredible. It’s a shame they will lose the outdoor elements after this year. If they can shore up their offensive line they will be a serious Super Bowl contender next year. Hats off to the Seahawks.

  88. The Seahawks draft players with grit in mind. That game took guts, hats off to both teams. Great game in terrible conditions.

I thought of Seattle got throw this game they would roll through Carolina.

  89. My condolences Vike fans. Regale in the season. You got the NFC North and outplayed the Seahawks till the last minute. As a Packer fan I know how lucky the Seahawks are however they are coached up to take advantage of breaks. They had nothing to do with that missed FG though.
    —————————————————–

Outplayed Seattle…no outscored yes, but all the points came from Seattle mistakes and penalties. So you can in no way say they outplayed Seattle in any aspect of the game…Seattle was choking all day long, and bad calls put the Vikings in the spot to win…Blame it on Karma.

  90. I can appreciate the enthusiasm of my fellow Viking fans but in reality we’re doomed unless Walsh, Peterson and Norv Turner get their walking papers. Blair stopped being clutch after his rookie year, Peterson will never stop running with the ball out and Norv Turner still calls an offense like its 1993.

  91. You neon hacks got off lucky & you know it
    ——————————————————

How about the phantom PI call on Kam that made the FG attempt possible…or the phantom horse collar, that gave them the previous field goal…or the offensive PI that ended up getting called on Sherm ? Talk about lucky, that is what the Vike’s had going in their favor the entire game…until it mattered.

  92. Ah now who are the Vikings going to blame.

Because it’s ALWAYS someone else’s fault.

Can you blame the Packers, probably not.

Can you blame the Giants this time? well no.

Well, it’s got to be the Saints. What, no?

The NFL? They did gift you a very dodgy PI call to win the game and you still choked.

Not really sure but I’m waiting to hear who’s fault it is this time…

That being said, both sides are gonna smack talk each other…..that is what you call a rivalry. And if you can’t take it don’t go on PFT. Otherwise come back on in about 3 hours, because our Packers Offense can’t do a thing……again.

  95. I’m happy with this season. We were not supposed to make the playoffs…we did. We were not supposed to win the North…we did. We were not supposed to give the Seahawks a game…we did. As far as I’m concerned, we are a year ahead of schedule. Zimmer as this team going in the right direction and the future looks bright. Yes, it was a sucky way to lose but I’m still happy with how this season.

  96. Yes Vikings choked and lost a game they had won. And it takes skill to miss such a gimme field goal. But Packer fans need to stop the trash talk. You have been disgraceful this season and lost to the bears and lions at home! You lost the division to the Vikings and as of right now the Redskins winner of the NFC least have 11 unanswed points on your team

  97. Great! Can’t wait to get the squirmy little SeaChickens into our house for a playoff game…. Please bring the same offense you brought to Minnesota and you’ll get beat by three touchdowns by the MVP and his boys! Let’s go Panthers! Keep Pounding!

  98. Not sure if it’s worse to choke like the Vikings or to get crushed as my Pack are doing right now. As it stands, I feel a similar pain. Really good game, Vikings, until your kicker choked. You will be an admirable opponent for years to come it seem.

  99. Packer trolls:

“Vikings will finish 4-12, last in the NFCN”
“Vikings will lose their last 6 games.”
    “Vikings won’t make the playoffs.”
“Vikings will get smoked by Green Bay to lose the division.”
“Vikings will get crushed by Seattle.”

Vikings lose 10-9 in the playoffs because we choked. But at least the Packers made it to the NFC championship game.

Packer trolls: See i told you so, one and done… along with us.

Good win Seahawks fans. Enjoy it.

  100. I love the Panther fans coming on here thinking the way this game went will be like the one in NC next week. It was the 3rd coldest playoff game ever, you could tell that both offenses were playing to not have turnovers or big mistakes. Panther fans should probably remember that they won in Seattle when Pro-Bowl LB Wagner was not playing, and Kam was just back. It took a mistake by Kam covering the TE for the Panthers to win. Its gonna be another slug-fest next week.

  101. No team gets more end of game playoff breaks than the Seahawks.
Romo’s gaff, Packers collapse last year, and now a missed 27 yd FG miss. Can anyone else name another team so fortunate?

  102. The PFT Poet is surprisingly quiet. When things were going well during the season, he/she couldn’t shut up. And now in defeat? Crickets. Come on, Poet. We want to hear from you. We’ve got a warm piece of humble pie just waiting for you.

  103. In 2 games vs Seattle this year the Vikes offense scored 0 TD’s. Say what you want about Walsh, but when you have a QB that can’t even get a ball in the end zone, you’re not going anywhere fast.

Yea, all Pack fans said that…..

All fan bases have trolls. AL OF THEM! Vikes played tough today, I give them props. Good D, stellar coach! That being said, both sides are gonna smack talk each other…..that is what you call a rivalry. And if you can’t take it don’t go on PFT. Otherwise come back on in about 3 hours, because our Packers Offense can’t do a thing……again.

    ——

    That’s why I said Packer trolls…..

  105. Tough way to lose, but the future is bright for this team. Did anyone on earth give the Vikings a chance to win this game, and here they were kicking a 27-yard field goal for the win. This team learned how to win in the regular season this year and next year I expect them to show they’ve learned how to win in the playoffs. Nobody was predicting Super Bowl this year, but next year expectations will be much higher.

  106. No team gets more end of game playoff breaks than the Seahawks.
Romo’s gaff, Packers collapse last year, and now a missed 27 yd FG miss. Can anyone else name another team so fortunate?

How about the patriot’s in last years superbowl? You have to recognize the opportunity for the field goal was a gift, between bad play calling from Seattle and the phantom PI call, that was clearly offensive PI. Without that call it is like 4th and 13 against the LOB.

  107. Why didn’t Peterson run the ball at the right hash mark like the play was intended. Tried to do too much on that one but no reason to keep bitchin’ and griping. I’m gonna enjoy them getting further than any of us expected this year and a whole lot can happen between now and the 2016 season but I see a lot of promise. Go Vikings!

  108. Let’s hope beaterson isn’t near any of his 7 kids with 7 different women after that loss. We all know that ain’t happening. It’s not like he’s a good father or anything.

    ******************************************************

I take exception to this comment. The Seahawks were the lucky ones in the Super Bowl last year. They had several near miraculous plays to keep them in it. The Patriots dominated for more than 2.5 of the 4 quarters. Were it not for the miraculous plays it would have been more, and the Seahawks would have been down by a couple scores at least. After Kearse caught the ball off his arse to put Seattle in a position to earn the winning score late in the game, Malcolm Butler made a superior defensive play to seal the win. Remember, the Patriots were still ahead and WINNING the game at that point. It was poo pooed and assumed Seattle would have scored if they ran the ball, but that never happened and there is no proof it would have happened, or that Lynch would not have fumbled, or that there wouldn’t have been a penalty pushing Seattle backwards etc. All kinds of things can happen. What actually happened was the Patriots outplayed the Seashawks on the game’s most pivotal play. It was thought that Butler made the play of his life and would never be heard from again. Malcolm Butler came into the 2015 season wanting to prove he wasn’t just a one-play wonder. Mission accomplished. Butler was rewarded Tuesday night (before Christmas) with a Pro Bowl selection in just his second NFL season and first as a starter. Butler joined former Patriots cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Aqib Talib on the Pro Bowl selection list, along with Chris Harris, Josh Norman, Marcus Peters, Patrick Peterson and Richard Sherman. Pretty good company. Had Sherman made that pick on the Patriots, it would be touted as a superior defensive play. Give Butler and the Patriots credit. They went out and WON that game STRAIGHT UP.

  110. Vikings are a very young team on the rise. Big improvement on last year. NFCN Champs is the best realistic outcome for the team this year. Draft well, pick up a FA if possible, or make a trade and reload, line ’em up again next year. SKOL VIKINGS!!

Are you serious??? Every “expert” and Viking fan had them going to the playoffs!!! Stop with your rose cred glasses like you expected nothing from this team

  112. Magnificent!!! Total epic choke that will be a gift that keeps on giving this off-season! Paging Bustwater. Once again, Tiny Teddy disappears in the fourth quarter. Oueen Nation, is Tiny Teddy still the GOAT?? HAHHAHAHAHAHAH! Have a killer off-season! LMAO!

I posted the other day that Vikes have been bottom feeders for so long that it wouldn’t change this weekend.

OK, so you posted it the “other day” and repeated it here. Is it any MORE intelligent or accurate now?

Or did you just need to embarrass yourself TWICE in two days?

How is the 3rd seed in the playoffs a “bottom feeder’?

  114. Walsh may be able to make the long field goals but there is something very wrong with him for distances under 50.

I wonder if this is like when the packers almost cut Crosby after his awful streak. Do you stick it out like they did? But I don’t remember Crosby missing 27 yard field goal to win a playoff game. Walsh is missing extra points too, regularly. He is unreliable.

  115. fbref99
What “experts” were you listening to. Hardly anybody predicted the Vikings being a playoff team.
MOST of them predicted 3rd place in the North and about 9-7, and out of playoffs. Almost to a person.
Peter King was the exception and even he was hesitant.

And by NO means did “every” Vikings fan promise the playoffs. So, take off your GREEN colored glasses and quit coming on here posting things just to taunt fans of a team who just had a brutal loss.

  116. Stay tuned you are about to learn something. This game was played in zero degrees. It was not conventional by any means. Next week the Hawks will look much different I am sure.

I thought the cold didn’t matter to the Hawks bc of Russ Wilsons “giant” hands. His words.

That being said, I’m sure the Hawks will look a lot different next week. Every team Carolina has played has given them their best shot, trying to play spoiler to the best, instead of just being the best themselves. Part of the reason the Hawks looked so pathetic today is bc they are so blood thirsty for Carolina that they forgot they had to beat the Vikes first to even get there.

Freezing or not, if Seattle brings the same garbage to the field that they brought today, Carolina will make them pay. Guaranteed.

  117. To those saying how “lucky” Seattle is. How many 15 yard penalties called against Seattle in the second half that put the Vikings in position to score points in the second half?

Hats off to the Vikings for making it very close game. Nothing but respect for that defense! Tough loss, and no one knows more about tough losses than being 2nd and goal from the one to ice a back to back SB win.

Keep your head up Minnesota. You’ve much to feel proud about this year, and next season looks very promising!

  118. So, take off your GREEN colored glasses and quit coming on here posting things just to taunt fans of a team who just had a brutal loss.

Is it too much to ask the holder to take the gloves off for one play? He could have spun that ball around.

He hit a 40 yarder with the laces in earlier….your excuse is invalid

  120. I simply marvel at the endless ways the Vikings find to lose playoff games. Say what you want about Gary Anderson’s miss but that was at a point in the game where the Vikings already had a lead and that game ended in OT.

This one has to hurt for a very long time.

This is true. Norv’s entire career is based on the fact that he happened to be coach when Emmit Smith was playing.

How could there be so much bad football and so many choking dogs in the playoffs?
    ————————-

This your first Wilcard Weekend? There are always at least a couple of what the heck are they doing there teams almost every year. Yes, Houston was meat on the table and Cincy self immolated but you can’t take anything from either team playing in those conditions today

  123. Interviewer: Is there anyone on the Seattle defense that can stop you Adrian?

Adrian: No, nobody can stop me.

Interviewer: you had 18 yards on 13 carries last time you two played-

Adrian: We weren’t aggressive enough, I didn’t switch hand like I was supposed to, we didn’t play that well that day, I should have cut more here and there. Nobody can stop me, nobody.

AP’s totals today: 23 carries for 45 yards, 1 fumble*

    *game changing fumble

Yeah Adrian, nobody can stop you…from fumbling!

  124. The call for PI was a good one, you cannot impede the receivers progress like kam did there. Same flag was thrown on munnerlyn earlier in the game, though it was illegal contact as the ball was not in the air at the time. I thought the officiating was on point today, I did not disagree with one call.

I usually don’t do this, but I place 100% of the blame on Blair Walsh (to his credit, he said the same thing after the game). You can’t fault the Vikings offense for not scoring enough, the conditions were brutal, and they played a very solid game. Same goes for the laces out, if you watched the whole game, you should’ve noticed that locke wasn’t turning the ball for any of the kicks. The laces were straight towards walsh on an earlier kick as well. My guess is the coaching staff told him just to get the ball down and not worry about the spin because of the weather.

And I think it was also clear that the Seahawks are more talented than the Vikings. Zimmer out coached Pete all day but the play that changed the game was the botched snap. On a play like that, schemes go out the window and it comes down to individual talent. RW showed that he was the best player on the field today.

  125. Sweet Justice. Minnesota Vikings, 55 Years of being the most futile team & futile fans in the NFL.

The futility of being a Vikings fan lives on. Why can this team never win a game that matters? It’s just sickening. Thanks for a rotten feeling offseason Blair Walsh!
    **************************

I really do feel bad for your sentiment because as a 76′ Seahawks fan I can so relate! Your team is on the rise to be sure! Skol!

  127. Zimmer is a good coach. Wish he would have had a different outcome. Defense played very well, offense did just enough, a freakin kicker cramped all over the what was a very entertaining game.

  128. I’m not a Vikings’ fan at all, but I don’t like seeing a team lose like that. It was a bad miss, but Walsh’s leg was the difference in 3 Vikings wins this year.

The weather was definitely an equalizer. It clearly affected everyone, but it had a greater effect on Seattle’s offense.

The Seahawks didn’t look at all like they had the last few weeks, nor did Wilson, and having a third-string rusher who was traded once and cut twice this year, as opposed to Lynch, didn’t help things.

Even though it’s hard to look at numbers in a game like this, it’s another typical Teddy Bridgewater game- 150 yds, 0 TD’s, 0 INT’s, and a bunch of field goals.

He’s consistently proving that he is exactly what you see; A guy with all of the intangibles and the talent to be a consistent game manager who won’t throw you into trouble but won’t get you into the end zone.

  129. Until 11:42 of the 4th Quarter in the 3rd coldest playoff game in NFL history, one of the most fun sporting experiences of my life.

    Thoughts on the game
-Hats off to Seattle. Tough game, but just enough plays were made

-Vikings D played lights out. If Josh Robinson stays focused & does not allow his man to get free on the 35 yard, bad snap, turned fumble turned long pass……its a very different game.

-AD just does not get it. When you are getting tackled, you need to brace & use 2 hands.

    -Blair Walsh, no excuses.

-Norv, there were multiple trips to the red zone without a single chance at throwing a TD pass into the end zone. One time, it was on third & goal…..no routes into the paint. Cmon man.
…Also, 3rd down on the final drive was a PERFECT opportunity to play action AD to the left, then roll out Teddy to the right with a throw to TE in the end zone, run for 1st down/TD or slide in bounds. If your young QB makes a big play, its confidence he can take with him going forward.
…This team needs more Zig when the other team is expecting Zag

Great season Vikes. As a super fan that attended the game, I was hoping for 9-7 & Wildcard. 11-5, NFC North Champ & an opportunity to be at the 1st outdoor playoff game since 1976 was super fun.

Wow, that’s a national powerhouse college program there!

  132. lanman11- I’d say the Pats were the luckiest of them all and I take exception with your lack of knowledge on a game you won. Here’s the trump card the seahawks had all four starts in their secondary either tear or sprain ligaments in the game. As time went on those injuries stiffened up and Brady found success.

Not only is that bad luck to have a torn mcl torn elbow ligament and be armless and turn ACL and broken forearm and torn labrum. This isn’t is quite literally the best secondary of all time and they were NOT hurt they were Injured and needed surgery. They gutted it out and played in the game but any objective person would tell you it affected their overall ability to play.

So while Seattle had one lucky catch they still had the ball down at the goaline with the best post season rb and got cute and lost. The Pats got the seahawks at their lowest of the whole season. Remember the LOB is arguably the catalyst to what will go down as the best defense of all time when time passes and we look back retrospectively to how incredible they have been for so long.

The Pats were significantly more lucky if just one of those all pros wasn’t hurt it likely results in a Seattle win. If they were not super banged up and needed surgery the seahawks probably win by double digits.

You my friend forgot the rhetoric after the game was how lucky the Pats were, we can pick through some stats all we want but watching the game it’s clear Pats had lady luck alot themselves. Pats still won but it was huge having 3 all pros get injured right before the Sb.

  133. Call it luck or whatever you want. That bogus PI on Kam was a terrible call and very lucky for the Vikings. Vikings aren’t lining up for that short FG without a crap call. Justice is served.

Seahawks offense was terrible today and all Bevell wanted to do is go for the kill shot deep down field. Wasting downs on the long ball all day, when Russell just didn’t have the touch in the frozen conditions. Then winding up fourth and just short and punting. Concentrate on ball control offense and we have another couple sustained drives and chances to score points.

Tough one for Vikings. Had the perfect start and stopped the Seahawks offense nearly the entire game. Vikings took advantage of Hawks mistakes and Seahawks did the same with AP fumble. The difference, Russell turns a disaster snap into first and goal and Hawks score a touchdown. Vikings never found the endzone…and Teddy isn’t the magician that Russell is.

Hope Hawks get Luke Willson and BeastMode back next week. We need everybody we can get for Carolina next week.

    Go Hawks!

  134. That was an ugly offensive display by both teams! AP RB supah starrah only 40 yards? Our 3rd string back doubled that! But other than that our fannies were very red from the defense as well as the igloo we played in. Good job Vikings. I
see great things in this teams future.
I’m happy the game went this way so now hopefully the media will stop anointing the Seahawks SB50 champs before a game is played! Anyone can win on any given Sunday & I believe we will be back to normal against Carolina as we will not

  138. Have you ever stood on a football field at the 17 yard line and realized how close that is to the goal posts? I could easily kick a football through them if that was my job. Choke job. Vikings deserved to win!

  139. What a twist. He scores ALL the points for the Vikings, but can’t score the most important three they need.

I feel bad for him and the team, but the way they broke down on the big Wilson scramble-pass was telling. They shouldn’t have needed a last-second field goal in the first place.

It will be another Packer collapse in the desert next weekend and we’ll all be laughing when the mold and gold get waxed by the Cardinals!

    _________
The Packers will probably lose next week, I know this I’m a realist. I also know the Packers have gone further than the Viking in the pay offs, get a better draft pick than the Vikings

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Yo clueless. You don’t get a better pick. Packers are still alive. Guaranteed no better than 25th pick. Vikings are 23rd.

  159. Aaannndddd… the Minnesota vikings extend their NFL-record of one-and-done playoff appearances yet another year!

Hang that up with your division flag!

LOL, only if you can arrange for it to be -10 in Carolina or hire the Super Bowl XL refs. The Seahawks will trample the Panthers and their gummy-bear soft “MVP.”

You won’t run. If you throw deep you’ll get picked. Our receivers can’t be covered by linebackers.

Say hello to 15 and 2.

You are absolutely right! The Hawks played a great game today and totally earned that win!

What are the panthers going to do? All we have are the league mvp and 6 first team all pro bowlers. How are we ever going to match up against a dynasty who had to beat up on the Browns and the Ravens to get into the post season?!?!?! Help!!!

The Seahawks are clowns. Their fans are even worse. I wanted the vikes to win today, not bc I was scared of Seattle, but bc I’ve been listening to their trash fans for too long. No, the weather won’t be -3 next week. Yes, we will run. Yes, we will throw deep. Yes, we will win.

And there ain’t a damn thing your crap team can do about it.

  161. Nothing but respect for the Vikings and their fans. Great game and great season. We know as good as anyone that any given sunday hearts get broken. Look forward to next year, and take it easy on the schnapps this year!

  162. Is it true?

I heard a rumor that Teddy Bridgewater got lost going home after the Vikings’ loss.

It turned out that somebody had painted an end zone in front of his house, and he had no idea where he was.

  163. Does anyone see an Ace Ventura Pet Detective 2 “The Return Of Lois Einhorn” sequel coming to theaters near you. Blair Walsh looses his mind, becomes a tranny and kidnaps the Seahawks mascot. And blames it on his holder. Really!!! twice with the laces in?

As a Packers fan, I AM basking in its glow.

Because, to a troll, a Viking loss is obviously more important than the Packer game that’s currently on.

I know this sounds like science fiction to anybody who lives in Minnesota, but one can post comments on a phone while watching a game on TV.

  165. The best way to fix games is for a kicker to miss field goals. That is the first commandment of how to control the score.

Well since you don’t comment during a Vikes game, you now have plenty of time during the games this weekend.

  167. Wow I am dumbfounded by the idiocy of the fans that post on this site . The average age here must be 12 because the NFL football knowledge is barely above people that have never watched a game .
