Report: Rob Ryan to join his brother Rex in Buffalo next year

Rex Ryan Rob Ryan AP

One Ryan brother wasn’t enough to get the Bills to the playoffs this year.

So the Bills decided to collect the whole set.

According to Alex Marvez of FOX Sports, the Bills are hiring former Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan to a position on his brother Rex’s staff.

Rex admitted it would fun to add his brother to his staff, despite the fact Rob presided over a historically bad defense in New Orleans.

They worked together on their father’s staff with the Cardinals in 1994-95, and at this stage in Rob’s career, a little nepotism might be just what he needed.

I think it’s gonna be great. Once a month they can get into those oversized sumo outfits (for Rob normal size) and they can duke it out. They can play courtship of eddies father as their entrance song into the field. Rob can be the Andy Richter role on Rex’s tv show. If he has one. If he doesn’t and someone reads this and creates one using my ideas then everyone commenting on this story gets free tickets. This is gonna be fun!

If nothing else, Rex Ryan is a pioneer/trendsetter. Prior to this occurence, the general rule of thumb was that the appointment of unqualified relatives to coaching staff positions was reserved for those HCs who were egomaniacs but who also had success via winning championships and/or sustained periods of regular season success – Don Shula, Marty Schottenheimer and Mike Shanahan come to mind. But Rex has broken the mold because while he’s also an egomaniac like the aforementioned, he could NEVER be mistaken for being a successful NFL HC.

Looks like the Pegula’s are carrying on Ralph Wilson’s legacy of obstinate tunnel vision.

As a Jets fan I am pleased.
Rex took over a good defensive team, added a reasonable QB, and the defense is worse and they didn’t make the wild card.
I hope Rex influences the draft (like he did in New York) and continues to not develop players (like in New York).
I hope Rex lasts at least 2 more years
    ———————————-
I hate the hire and hate the thought of Rex getting 2 more years. However, why would any reasonable Jets fan want him to continue to sweep NY and keep them out of the playoffs?

no other team in the NFL would hire him as DC. no D1 college teams would even hire him

Doesn’t matter anyways…….he is an assistant coach……in other words, he does nothing. He isn’t coaching the Def or making the calls, that is Thruman and Rex.

At least Ralph Wilson had an excuse – he was 106 years old with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel – but the Peligua’s really have no excuse for making such bone-headed moves.
