Aaron Rodgers: We got our confidence going

LANDOVER, MD - JANUARY 10: Quarterback Aaron Rodgers #12 of the Green Bay Packers celebrates after the Green Bay Packers defeated the Washington Redskins 35-18 during the NFC Wild Card Playoff game at FedExField on January 10, 2016 in Landover, Maryland. Two minutes into the second quarter of Sunday’s game in Washington, the Packers were down 11-0 and in a familiar place offensively.

They’d punted three times, picked up one first down and given up a safety on their four possessions, leaving little reason to think that a breakthrough was about to happen for a unit that was underwhelming for the majority of the regular season. Naturally, that’s just when it came.

The Packers picked up the tempo of their offense and the Redskins struggled to keep pace as Green Bay stormed down the field for a Randall Cobb touchdown that seemed to flip a switch on the game. Kirk Cousins would fumble the ball back quickly, the Packers scored 10 more points before halftime and 15 on their first two possessions in the second half on their way to a 35-18 victory.

Rodgers would finish the day 21-of-36 for 210 yards and two touchdowns with 141 more yards coming from a rushing game that took off once things got going through the air.

“This is huge for us, it really is,” Rodgers said, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “I talked a lot the last couple of weeks about being able to turn it on. A lot of you probably thought that this was lip service. But we just needed a game like this to get our mojo back. We got our confidence going. I said this week, it just takes one — one performance to get us going back in the right direction and believing we can make a run.”

The Packers scored all of eight points in a Week 16 visit to Arizona, so they have some work to do this week. Sunday’s performance provides more hope that they can do it than the Packers have had any right to feel in quite a while.

  4. wiscobear says: Jan 11, 2016 7:00 AM

They certainly had the right matchup to get going. 11 of the top 12 scoring defenses made the playoffs, with the 10-win Jets being the one that missed out, and the 19th-ranked Redskins getting in. Road ahead will be much tougher for the Pack.

JC Tretter did a pretty good job at LT for a player that’s normally the backup center. Hopefully the OL can get reasonably healthy by Saturday and it would sure help to get Sam Shields back, too. The rookie CBs are really going to make the defensive backfield a major strength of the Packer defense over the next few years. Randall & Rollins have been very solid for rookies all season and Gunter had a nice play yesterday as well.

They went into Arizona the first time with a guard playing at the left tackle position (first time he ever played tackle) and lost their starting right tackle in the second quarter. Arizona is an excellent team with an opportunistic coach and a solid pass rush, they capitalized on the Packers’ weaknesses that day. Hopefully, the Pack can go back there with some improved strength on the O-line, along with a little momentum and make a game of it.

The Packers turned it on all the sudden. I think the NFC playoffs just got a little more interesting. 4 great teams left in the NFC playoffs. This means there will be 3 great games played before the NFC goes to and wins the Superbowl.

Sad part is, we only have another month of football. Season flew by this year…… again!

Sure, I’d love it if you win but why set myself up for disappointment?

This is why I don’t see the Packers beating Arizona. The Redskins made the mistake of dropping guys back in coverage because of their untrustworthy secondary instead of blitzing and capitalizing on a banged up bad Oline. I don’t see the Cardinals doing the same. They have good corners and will have the ability to really attack that line and not give Aaron the time to run and find a receiver. I thought the packers would beat the skins but I just don’t see them beating a much better team in the Cardinals.

Ok queens fans, here’s the difference between the two teams:

The Queens are one and done.

The Pack is one and won.

And let’s not here anything about how GB had an easier game. The Pack beat the team that beat you, let me rephrase that. The Pack beat the team that beat you twice.

But overall the queens probably have a better golf handicap, they have a lot more time to work on their golf game, year in and year out.

I prefer to keep it real and to guard myself so it’s not going to be a real big letdown when they lose a playoff game yet again.

  33. dpdonny says: Jan 11, 2016 9:52 AM

Aaron Rodgers is a very good QB, but he is no leader of men.

He does not play well from behind. He has no fire in his gut when his team needs it the most. Only after the game is well in hand does display the poise and energy required of a leader. Watch him at the end of the Washington game when he’s on the field greeting the D or ST players with a smile and hand shake.

Just watch this coming weekend when they’re playing from well behind in AZ. He will not have the fire — he will not have the will required of an elite QB leader.

Aaron Rodgers is a very good QB, but he is no leader of men.

Packers built for the playoffs? Yeah, and our Packers are built for losing them to.

  38. packerstexansfan says: Jan 11, 2016 10:23 AM

Yes, they beat up on an inferior team. But during the regular season, they struggled to beat, and at times, even lost to some inferior teams. So they did what good, playoff teams are supposed to do: Beat them down.

This by no means, means that this is going to be a close game Saturday. There’s a good chance that a repeat of their last game happens. However, with this surge, the week has just gotten much more interesting leading into the game!

Oh quickly Packers fans forget….the NFC North division champion Vikings beat TWO teams that “beat you” at home no less!!!
The Vikings swept both the Bears & Lions yet somehow the Packers couldn’t even beat them at home!

    Hmmmm
    That’s interesting

  40. stellarperformance says: Jan 11, 2016 10:28 AM

The Vikings outplayed and should’ve beaten a team that boot-stomped them, at home, a few weeks ago. Are they the only team capable of pulling an upset, after a beat-down? The only ones?

If the Vikings can do it (nearly,) the Packers sure as heck can.

I hope Arizona is falling over themselves with over-confidence.

Vikings fans talk about choking but fail to see the irony. Choking is blowing the game in the last stage. Not losing. The Vikings choked against Seattle. The Texans lost to the Chiefs. There’s a difference, but since the education in Minnesota is shorter than a 27 yard field goal I wouldn’t expect you to understand.

  44. tonyromo1sbl says: Jan 11, 2016 10:41 AM

The redskins win the putrid NFC East and it’s one-and-done!! So this is how you can win but lose.

Who would you rather be now? The Cowboys with the #4 and 34 picks coming, with their all-pro QB and skill players returning OR the division winning redskins who hold pick #24 and don’t even have a viable QB under contract for 2016.

You gonna sign “Cuz” to a long term deal? You really want DeSean anymore? Its back to the future for the skins next season.

  45. toolkien says: Jan 11, 2016 10:41 AM

Cardinals will win, but it won’t be a blowout like the last game. That game was on the proverbial knife edge when the Pack could have made it 10-7, but a turnover opened the door to 17-0, and that opened the flood gates. This game will be 31-24, 30-23, 28-20 Cardinals with the game still reasonably contested, not a late cosmetic score.

And given that this season was filled with anger and recriminations and back biting, by all means a down year for Green Bay, it STILL is a season into the divisional round of games, one of eight teams still with something going on, while the rest of the NFC North (and fans) are making tee-times. Order and normalcy has been restored.

And as a final comment, once the Packers FINALLY stretched the field with that pass to Jones in the second quarter, everything opened up from there. Expect 2016, with Nelson back and healthy, to be a “normal” season for the Packers. Detroit, Chicago, and Minnesota had the door opened for them for one season, and they didn’t take advantage of it. At least three seasons of the Pack restored to the top of the division. 2013 Rodgers is out for half the year, and the rest of NFC North couldn’t capitalize, 2015 Nelson goes out and the offense fizzles and no real capitalization occurs.

Washington has been a decent team the second half of the season. Bashing them is inaccurate as well, but that’s just how people are. Shake it off WAS, you made the playoffs unlike most of the other haters.

GB won a playoff game that few gave them a chance at. Are we just going to be a juggernaut now? Probably not, but it is an excellent start for a team that has the capability, but hasn’t really delivered.

If a team was ever going to turn it on, the 1st round of the playoffs is the perfect place to start. They have a tough matchup against Arizona. If they build on the performance, they will at least make a game of it. Then, who knows?

Thinking the Packers are going to suddenly flip a switch and become a contender is foolish. But as a fan, that’s what you have to hope for…

Reality is they beat the worst playoff team in the NFC… and they should have. The other three teams remaining are all better than the Packers and their defenses are WAAAAAY better than the Redskins.

If GB had even one serviceable pass catcher, I’d have a little faith that Rodgers could get hot and surprise some teams. But no one on the team is capable of getting even an inch of separation. Accuracy only gets you so far and the crew just isn’t cutting it. Even yesterday there were no catchers getting open. Rodgers just eventually was “on” and the guys decided to haul them in. All contested and draped in defenders… That isn’t going to happen against Arizona or Seattle or Carolina.

  60. thebirdofprey says: Jan 11, 2016 12:26 PM

The Cardinals are going to blow Green Bay out of the water. Look at the Washington defense – ranked in the bottom quarter and did not play the way all other teams that have handled Green Bay yesterday. They played off coverage and rushed 4 or 5 at best.

AZ is going to play bump and run and attack that offensive line. Vegas has the line the right way. Its a long shot for Green Bay to win.

The best thing is McCarthy will have a little more job security, and he might not have to fire anyone to get it, like last year. Or not.

The chokers will come again. Ok, so it’s 2 and done.

    Pack go pack. Lol

Where are the Vikings playing next weekend? I’ve looked and looked at schedule after schedule and I just can’t find it.

You can’t disassociate yourselves from a well-earned nickname just by weakly attempting to transfer it to someone else.

The Packers lost in Seattle last year. The Vikings choked. Big difference. The Vikings are the all-time post-season chokers. Anderson? Favre? 41-0 Giants?

    Come on. Own it.

Let’s face reality, when your offense has been as putrid as the Packers for the last 10 games, it doesn’t all get fixed with one game. But there is a real chance to improve on the improved play of Sunday. There exists that opportunity and with a qB of Rodger’s skills, that can be enough to win.

That and have a FG holder that understands the value of laces out.

    Hey greenandcold check your facts

31 playoff year appearances DOES NOT lead the NFL.

Both Cowboys and Giants have had 31 appearances.

Cowboys did that in 55 years, GreenBay 94 years

    Go Boys!!

As a Packers fan, I can’t bring myself to join other Packers fans in the trolling and putting down of the Vikings at their fans.

OK so the Pack has won 31 playoff games. Big whoop. The only ones that matter are the ones that got them into the Super Bowls they won.

Sure, the Vikings are done and overall through history the Packers are better than them but I’ll feel more like bragging about that when the Pack wins another SuperBowl and the way they have been losing playoff games the last few years, who knows when or if that will ever be again.

Nothing more amusing than reading posts by envious Viking fans. They must get a ‘kick’ out of it.
    ——————————————————————————–
Those Vikings fans deserve all the bragging rights they have earned after beating the Pack in Lambeau to be the NFC North Champs.
Until the Pack make it to the SB, we don’t have bragging rights.

That worked out pretty good losing that last game, didn’t it ??

Apparently the only effective weapon Green Bay has is when they get free penalties using their gimmick offense. That team cannot play real football – they are going to get royally smashed by Arizona – a team that delivers a punch and knows that Aaron Rogers is really a faux QB who is now on the back side of his career.

I never realized how little there is to the GB offense other than hard counts and free plays.
