Titans to interview Chiefs exec Ballard

Ballard_Chris

The Titans will interview Chiefs’ executive Chris Ballard for their vacant general manager position on Monday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.

Ballard was promoted to director of football operations with the Chiefs last spring. He had spent two years as the team’s director of player personnel and is considered one of the rising stars in his field.

Ballard interviewed for the Bears’ general manager job last January. He spent more than a decade with the Bears before joining the Chiefs in 2013. Ballard has also explored and turned down other opportunities.

Rapoport reported that the sitdown with Ballard is the Titans’ last scheduled interview.

Hire him, he’s better than any of the other people we’ve interviewed

I’m not really sure if any of these GM candidates are bad or good… The vast majority of them have never been GM before, so it’s just hard to tell. Not even sure what “Director of Football Operations” is, exactly.

I just want them to hire somebody that’s not associated with the Jaguars or Lions, and focus on hiring a good coach… Doug Marrone and Mike Mularkey are the only names that they’ve mentioned so far… Makes me cringe

Which is why the Chiefs should stay far away, and I say this as a Bears fan. I could not have been more relieved than when he was NOT hired by the Bears last year after being the presumed favorite in the early going.

He’s not the only reason the Bears had over a decade’s worth of crappy drafts, but anyone who has an association with the Bears personnel during that timeframe really needs to be vetted closely.

That title basically means “Assistant GM” & was probably more closely involved in actual scouting than the actual GM. So yeah, you don’t know if any of them will be good. But the idea is to hire one that was with a team that drafted well & made solid decisions in Free Agency in the hopes that he had a hand in those decisions.

Ballard should be named the GM and he should immediately name Dave Toub as HC. Ballard has made some great draft selections the past few years ( when he was obviously in charge) and really helped build the Chiefs.

Toub is not a fancy, “big name” coaching prospect, but he and Vic Fangio are the best NFL ready HC candidates available. Toub has had one of the top special teams units wherever he has coached. He is a no nonsense guy, who will get the most out of his players.

The Chiefs roster is loaded with talent. I don’t know how much Ballard is responsible for, but it is worth finding out for the Titans. The Titans roster is full of guys and needs an upgrade.
