Reports: Giants “closing in” on deal with McAdoo

Arizona Cardinals v New York Giants Getty Images

The Giants are “closing in” on a deal with Ben McAdoo to make their offensive coordinator their new head coach, per multiple reports.

Art Stapleton of The Record cited a source in saying the the Giants and McAdoo were closing in on a deal. A similar report from Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News said the same but added “it’s not a done deal yet.”

Stapleton’s report called McAdoo “an internal favorite from the start.” McAdoo, 38, has been the Giants’ offensive coordinator for the past two seasons.

The job is open because Tom Coughlin stepped down earlier this month. McAdoo also interviewed with the Eagles.

The Giants were set to interview Hue Jackson Thursday but Jackson accepted the Browns’ head coaching job on Wednesday.

Oh thank god. See ya, Mike Smith. Later, Marrone.

Now please — FIND A DECENT DC TO FIX THE LEAGUE’S WORST DEFENSE!!!!

Great now that junk offensive scheme is permanent. Guess we get to watch Eli throw 25 pics every year until he is retired.

LOL terrible move. I expected a lot more from the Giants.

    Should have kept Tom Coughlin.

  5. arrogantnation says: Jan 13, 2016 8:34 PM

Should have kept Coughlin and let him groom McAdoo more.

  6. FinFan68 says: Jan 13, 2016 8:34 PM

I’ll bet they asked Saban and he said no so they accelerated the process with their OC.

Was really hoping they would pick up a proven coach if even only for 2 or 3 years. THEN promote McAdoo.

I sure wish I could go from “supervisor” to “CEO” in a matter of 2 or 3 years.

  9. tyler4richardson says: Jan 13, 2016 8:36 PM

Why was this guy so sought after? Anyone watch the Giants offense this year? It kind of sucked and was always taking delay of game penalties. OBJ threat is what made that offense somewhat relevant.

  10. pfatl says: Jan 13, 2016 8:41 PM

His mustache game has a long way to go before he reaches the level of Reid and Ditka, much less Wannstedt.

With the 1st overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft, the New York Giants select…!

Most of you don’t watch enough football to even comment. McAdoo coached Rodgers to a championship, and had receivers that wouldn’t start on most teams in the NFL, and the Giants were still in 14 of 16 games. That will change, and theyou will be a force if they can fix the other side of the ball.

  14. kev86 says: Jan 13, 2016 8:48 PM

    McAdoo! Good move by Giants.

  15. arwiv says: Jan 13, 2016 8:48 PM

No sense in praising this move and no sense in killing this move…..anyone who claims they know how good or bad Mcadoo will do as a head coach is full of it. As a Giants fan I’ll let it play out and hope that we just found the next Parcells as opposed to the next Ray Handley.

  16. zack2482 says: Jan 13, 2016 8:50 PM

Thanks for hiring him! Signed rest of the NFC East. Sorry, no one said it yet.🙂

  17. rcampore says: Jan 13, 2016 8:53 PM

As a Giants fan, this is such a horrible move!!! Let’s replace a 2 time SB winning coach with a 2 year OC who finally decided after 15 games that maybe he should stop rotating the rbs every other play! And they are stating that Spags is supposedly staying as well so everything has changed but stayed exactly the same. UGH. Another mediocre season ahead with a GM who will go pick up linebackers at the local grocery store.

The offense hasn’t been the problem. That ‘junk scheme’ has been pretty successful. In McAdoos offense Eli has thrown 14 INT’s each of the last 2 years, tied for his career 16 game low and had 2 of his 3 lowest overall INT percentages. Try to keep up

The issue remains Reese’s pieces, that badly under manned defense and year in year out the most woeful training staff in the league.

Was really hoping for a defensive minded head coach that would keep McAdoo on. If they do make McAdoo HC he will probably keep Spagnuolo. Spags did fine in his first stint as Giants DC but that D was pretty well stocked, it may have lacked bodies this year but it was also vanilla.

  19. arwiv says: Jan 13, 2016 9:00 PM

The Giants currently have the 6th most cap space in the NFL (43 mill) which will increase once the official cap is set and guys like Beason and probably cruz are cut….it will ultimately be about 60 mill. They have a top 10 draft pick. They have a franchise QB who is very good (despite the unfounded abuse he gets). They have an all-world receiver.

The Giants are hardly in as bad a spot as most nervous-nellies are making them out to be in. The 2nd most injured team in the NFL won 6 games and lost 5 that they had leads in in the last 2 minutes of the game. Going forward I think I can coach this team to 9 wins next year.

  20. wallabear says: Jan 13, 2016 9:00 PM

One of Eli[te]’s best passing seasons (2.5:1 TD/INT ratio – 35 TDs/14 INTs) and yet the team goes 6-10? That’s a problem with the offense/McAdoo. Two steps back, Mara & Tisch lol

  21. anthonykornheiser says: Jan 13, 2016 9:05 PM

This was the right move. Young and transformed the Giants o to a top 10 ranked offense both years. Aside from 2 lineman had a makeshift o line, zero weapons aside from OBJ at Wr and can potentially turn will tye into a stud TE.
If the Giants had a 27th ranked D as opposed to the 32nd ranked D they would have made the playoffs. They have tons of money to spend and a top ten pick. Giants will be fine. If they bring in philbin as the OC ( good OC and bad HC) this will end up being a nice move.

I’ve watched football for 25 years so to assume that people that comment don’t watch enough football? How the hell would you even know? McAdoo was the QB coach in Greenbay so pretty sure he didn’t coach Rodgers to a SB, that would be McCarthy. His offense was fine and that’s great as an OC, but that doesn’t mean you are qualified to be a successful head coach. He’s only been an OC for 2 years and now to jump to head coach, keep Spagnoulo as DC and keep Reese. All it points to is the Giants have squarely slapped Coughlin in the face and said it was all his fault.

  25. captainmanhattan says: Jan 13, 2016 9:13 PM

I’m okay with this but please fire spags!!!! Dude is cashing checks off what he did in 07!!!

  26. laces out says: Jan 13, 2016 9:13 PM

As a Giants fan, I can dig it. Especially since Eli picked him

  27. dontbeemo says: Jan 13, 2016 9:16 PM

So let me get this straight… The Mara/Tisch ownership structure came to the conclusion that Coughlin, McAdoo Spags and Reese picking players was inferior to McAdoo, Unamed OC, spags and Reese? That can’t make sense to them… it simply can’t.

  28. dolphins4 says: Jan 13, 2016 9:18 PM

I hope they hurry up and sign him.

  29. irish68a says: Jan 13, 2016 9:19 PM

Now hire Jim Schwartz as Defensive Coordinator. His record in Buffalo was outstanding and the Giants run a 4-3 Defense. Then when he is released sign Mario Williams after the Bills release him. He will make the defense respectable early.

    The NFL is hilarious.

  32. billsfan1 says: Jan 13, 2016 9:37 PM

Giants will looking for another head coach in two years.

  34. sdelmonte says: Jan 13, 2016 9:42 PM

No way to know what McAdoo will do. But I prefer this to just recycling some undersuccessful former HC.

  35. deprado1 says: Jan 13, 2016 9:47 PM

Love all the Giant fans who say they should have hired a proven commodity yet they can’t name that person. Unfortunately they cannot resurrect Vince Lombardi and Bill Parcells looks like he’s retired for good.

  36. notoriousbri says: Jan 13, 2016 9:52 PM

Man he looks old for 38.. Eli got what he wanted.. Let’s see what happens

  37. Chris says: Jan 13, 2016 9:58 PM

Good thing Jeff Lurie and Howie Roseman got a “headstart” with their coaching search. smh

  38. culturalelitist says: Jan 13, 2016 10:18 PM

With the Dolphins hiring the talented but green Adam Gase, and the Giants, Eagles and Bucs settling for status quo “don’t rock the boat” type guys like McAdoo and Koetter, it sounds like the Cleveland Browns aka Worst Franchise in the NFL will end up with the best hire.

  39. competitivecompetitioncompeter says: Jan 13, 2016 10:44 PM

All of you people who say the Giants offense has been pathetic the last few years are forgetting the amazing, star-making one handed catch Ben McAdoo had about a year and a half ago.

You don’t get on the cover of Madden for nothing, I’m sure the Giants will be just fine.

    Yours Truly,
    Mr. Mara

They were leading in the 4th quarter of more than half those 10 losses. The defense couldn’t make the final stop to preserve the lead and the win. They were tied with the Panthers 35-35, and a defensive stop would have meant overtime. The offense primarily lacked a short-yardage running game (horrendous on 3rd/4th-and-short or inside the 5). I was also not happy with Wing as the punter, who would hit 40 yard pop flies when the Giants were backed up instead of getting a leg into a 50+ yarder.

I’m grateful that the richest NFL Owner had the sense to hire the Best Football Minds and let them preform wonders. WOW! That the ‘oldest coach in the league’ creates a Team Esprit d’Corps which few teams can rival, least create. At this time of the season, Coach Carroll has to fall back to a Coach Chuck Knoxism; “We have to play the hand we are dealt.”… Two Great Coaches!

I think the Anti-Eli Manning comments are totally in poor taste. Eli Manning is just getting over a very emotional time, have some compassion. Also his offense, stinks, no one protects him, and his wide receivers suck. They could not catch a ball if they had crazy glue in their gloves.
I agree that getting rid of Tom Coughlin was a stupid move but at this point, unfortunately, it cannot be undone. Yes Ben McAdoo has made some stupid errors, poor clock management, and dumb decisions, but he is the only thing they have after Tish and Mara messed up. At least McAdoo is someone that Eli Manning is familiar with and its less adjustment than someone from the outside. Personally I think Reese, Tish, and Mara all need the boot.

  50. psubeerman21 says: Jan 14, 2016 5:47 AM

I despise the giants, but if memory serves they lost a lot of very close games, some of which was due to questionable coaching decisions. They were probably the best team in the division (which isn’t saying much) but I do find it amusing they hired a guy that may have been responsible in part for those questionable coaching decisions

  51. realdeal12 says: Jan 14, 2016 7:40 AM

and Phlibin as the OC, even better!

keep up the good work Giants!

  52. nygnjd says: Jan 14, 2016 11:17 AM

The Giants had 3 games they scored 30 or more points and lost. So I wonder at the people who are putting the blame on the offense.
