Bill Belichick gets a little salty over Chandler Jones questions

As you might imagine, Patriots coach Bill Belichick was in no mood to discuss defensive end Chandler Jones and his unusual week this morning.

Jones made headlines by walking into a police station and ending up in the hospital, because of a reaction to what was reportedly synthetic marijuana.

Belichick opened his press conference by deferring to the team’s initial statement on the matter (which really didn’t say anything) and insisted the health and safety of his players was his first priority.

But it got really interesting when he was asked whether the situation would change the way he used Jones this week against the Chiefs.

We’ll find out Saturday,” he said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. “I could just Xerox you a copy of game-plan and you can send it over to Kansas City.”

At least he didn’t offer to SnapFace it.

While Belichick can duck and defer all he wants, Jones will remain a story, because of his importance to the team and the curious nature of the story.

And making copies with the Billster isn’t going to change that.

  1. Unlike other coaches who dance around and keep answering the same question the same way wasting everyone’s time it’s standard procedure for Bill to say he’s not going to answer, period. It’s the foolish writer who thinks THEY are the one to get the Master to speak. Now, the Jones story IS interesting and it will all play out in house and not in the media. The media will do what they always do. Speculate and turn that speculation into unproven fact.

  2. He says with a huge shiner in his left eye. Most people are righties…

Won’t talk about that either? The pats always have some shady something they are trying unsuccessfully to cover up.

The fact chandler did it isn’t even that big, it was the police chief who is also the head of patriots security trying to cover it all up that was so eye opening.

    Shady

  3. I’d be salty too, this story has already been in the news longer than ‘ol Five Head’s interesting predicament.

HIPAA keeping Jones’ medical situation private = cover up.

HIPAA protecting why Five Head’s wife had HGH shipped to her home = totally legit

“I don’t always hate on the Patriots, but when I do, it’s always with a double standard” – said every Patriot hater, at least once

  4. He was hospitalized, released, and showed up for practice on time and prepared. What else is there to this dumb story?

ESPN and crew are continuing their vendetta against New England. Funny that they are trying to blow up Chandlers legal incident, yet they’ve done there best to corver up everything for glory boy Peyton, getting in on some of that slap arm.

    Double standards rule the USA.

Agree. My speculation is that if Jones is active for the game that Belichick will sit him for at least the 1st quarter.

  6. There’s a classic SNL skit where a bunch of reporters ask similar questions of Gen. Schwartzkof about the pending Desert Storm invasion. It captures the absurdity of the media perfectly.

  7. Funny how no one cares about golden boy manning having a BANNED substance sent to his home. Yet a patriot who used a substance that is not even on the banned list is getting more scrutiny than the golden boy.
Double standard. So much for integrity Roger.

  8. The guy OD’ed and sought assistance at a Police Station and Hospital. No Dr. in the country would suggest a person go to work the next day after they OD’ed the night before.

The fact the Pats are just ignoring the situation is quite telling. Just like Hernandez, it wasn’t until he was cuffed and in jail before the Pats even reacted. Apparently they need Jones to be unconscious or his life in danger before they actually do something.

    What a pathetic organization.

  9. The media was certainly less than helpful during the Deflategate charade and BB was never all that forthcoming to begin with. How you respond to his continued nonanswers is to either get some thicker skin or complain about it I guess. The guy’s not getting paid to be Jack Benny.

  11. its funny how pats fans are comparing Jones to manning…

    lets see…

Chandler showed up at a police station jacked out of his mind..

Some reporter said Manning had HGH sent to his house but then later he said he made the story up. pats fans still sticking to it though..

so can someone please tell me how these are similar again???

pats fans are hilarious..they look for any ounce of anything they can find on another team to justify their teams cheating….

    ——————

How exactly is taking synthetic weed “cheating”? It may be stupid, but it’s not cheating. Newsflash too: I would imagine at least half of the players in the nfl smoke weed – on every team.

According to ESPN, Chandler Jones had a bad reaction to a legal substance. That doesn’t sound like a vendetta or persecution to me.

    Shouldn’t Jones be suspended?

No. According to the CBA the league will not suspend you for that first offense unless you are also involved in a DUI situation.

  15. Brilliant.

I am sorry, Pats fan or not, the guy is funny as hell and he just ends any other stupid, non-sensical questions as follow- ups, from ever even occurring with an answer like that.

    Classic Belichick.

Another reason why he’s the best.

    ———-

it’s good to know you have all the facts on what Jones consumed, the amount he consumed, that you polled every doctor in the country on whether they would suggest someone going to work for someone that OD’d the night before, or that team doctors even made that suggestion.

By the way, wouldn’t “the night before” be defined as Sunday night?

  18. This is good news for all Pats haters. This is what you’ve been waiting for. Remember how after the “spygate” foolishness, you said that was the reason the Pats were winning so much? But then they won 18 straight afterward – without those all important films. Remember how after the “deflategate” frame-up, you all clamored that was the true reason the Pats won all those games and also rarely fumbled? But then the Pats won the SB , rattled off 10 straight wins this year secured another bye in the playoffs and are favored to win the SB again. But now you know…the reason why the Patriots have been so dominant in the last 15 years is because Chandler Jones smoked weed last Sunday and Belichick had a shiner!!! It was so obvious all along but it took you sleuths to shine some light on it … So, nicely done, knowledgeable football people. You have solved the mystery!

  20. I smell an upset this weekend, the Pats are acting very Unpat like leading up to a playoff game…usually they squash this nonsense and it never gets out to the general public….Bill is trying to keep his team focused and now that he has to deal with this issue Jones future could be in jeopardy…oh wait, is he a good player, then never mind……

    Thanks Dr. Phil

  22. @folkcrusader – Jones didn’t “OD”

And @chadsmith013 – “Some reporter” didn’t say he made anything up. A pharmacist involved with sending HGH to Manning’s house shared that info via a hidden camera and then retracted it because he might be in a boat load of trouble. Even Manning hasn’t denied HGH was sent to his address.

Or to prove your double standard

  24. Jones wasn’t arrested, was released by the hospital, and showed up for practice. The team allowed him to practice. If it is synthetic marijuana, it’s not on the banned list, so I don’t believe there can be any league consequences. The law says medical info can’t be released. The only people that think there’s a big story here are haters and ‘inquiring minds’ who like to keep up with the Kardasians. Maybe Sheard starts instead. So what. Jones has been battling injuries all year.

  25. Sadly, most of the commentors on PFT are too young to get the reference to “Making copies” without googling the answer.

  26. He’s right. Anything he says to answer that question fills in game plan gaps for KC. If he says no change to how they use him, then winds up benching him for a half, he’d be ripped for lying. If he says he’s benching him for a half, then follows through, KC has had a few days to game plan around him not being in the game. Sure, KC doesn’t know whether he’s lying or telling the truth, but why even go there? His answer was perfect to a stupid reporter question.

    Shady

The Patriots director of security is Mark Briggs and has been since before Gillette opened, not some podunk police chief. He is internationally known and respected and holder of a British Empire Medal. Among other things Briggs is a former event manager at Wembley and consultant for the Olympic Games,

  28. As an aside: Why is synthetic legal, but regular, god made, lovely marijuana illegal in most states?

I know the answer, but the hypocrisy of our stupid political leaders talking out of their mouths on one side, why taking hand-outs from drug companies is pathetic and old.

Legalize it (not synthetic, as it is dumb and dangerous), at a national level and get on with it.

Meanwwhile, Gomer Manning is running around pumping HGH to cheat the game and stay on the field, with Goodell allowing it right in front of everyone’s face.

    Again, hypocrisy.

  29. Glad he is recovering from that Lombardi Trophy falling on his head when he opened a cupboard. Those things are just stacked up like cordwood over there.

  30. As for Bellichek’s black eye…..He was doing a “Bill Clinton” (Not have sex with that woman) with Kraft’s lady and Kraft gave him a “non-Hillary” response.

  31. It’s legal in MA. It shouldn’t be, but it is.

Talk to the politicians who take handouts from drug manufacturers, likely from over in China.

Hey! That reminds me, isn’t Gomer Manning using undetectable HGH RIGHT NOW to cheat the game?

Where is Goodell with the “integrity” line?

    Where is ESPN?

    Hmmm?

The guy is prancing on and off a football field at age 39, after buying REPEATED shipments from the Guyer Institute, the lattter procuring undetectable HGH from China.

  32. Once again, Pats can do no wrong, let’s wash another story under the rug.

Pathetic cheaters…one day the real truth will come out about this shady organization.

  33. Although various cities have banned the synthetic marijuana, the drug is currently legal in 40 states, excluding Kansas, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, Louisiana and Illinois, who have either banned the drug or have pending legislation against it. Coalitions across the country want to ban the drug widely known as “legal marijuana.”

  34. The funny thing about this story is that, like catnip, it brings out the underlying paranoia and defensiveness in Pats kool aid drinkers. “But Mommy, Billy did it too.”

  35. Black Dog says:

Since when is synthetic marijuana a “legal substance?”
    ——–

it’s pretty simple. if it is not illegal, then by default it is legal.

    ———————-
Since the beginning of time and until it is made illegal.
Non-synthetic marijuana is also decriminalized in MA, but still against NFL rules.

  37. BB apparently walked (without comment) through the locker room carrying a pair of boxing gloves yesterday.

Anyone who doubts the deadpan sense of humor on this guy is totally missing out.

  38. This is Bill,

    He is not witty.
    He is not personable.

Pat fans defend him because their feelings are hurt that a media story picks on Bill.

The media picks on every coach/player/front office in the NFL.

    Get over it.

The Pat’s were selling out their home games long before Brady came along. But just continue to spew anything so everyone can see what you are.

  40. chippy, how many years has it been since Miami won a playoff game? Don’t bother looking, it has been 16 years; 32 since they were in the super bowl.

  41. BB=Bill Belichick not be confused with Big Ben who
thanks to his press conference we know which shoulder
is injured how many ligaments are strained and he
probably mentioned his underwear size as well.

Been a fan since the early 90’s. I’m not going anywhere.

  43. When do we get to the bottom of Peyton Manning’s HGH use? Yes, who else in is home would have a need to use?

Why are we not hearing an explanation regarding the HGH the shipments to his home? Were there other PEDs as well?

Where is league integrity now on PEDs?

We can handle the truth about Manning’s HGH use.

  44. aljack are you suggesting that the pats dont have alot of bandwagon fans? you are delusional if you think this….of course they have alot of legit fans..but you know just as well as i do , there are TONS of bandwagoners..

  45. Did Bill ever simply get copies of game plans faxed or did he only use
Matt Walsh film work and Ernie Adams shenanigans to get opponents game plans?
He was brilliant ,it was so worth the $1.75 million in fines and loss of a couple draft picks. He doesn’t care what everyone outside of NE thinks.

  46. Jones is stupid putting his team in an awkward situation. Granted that what he did is not illegal and more than likely will not be punished by the NFL but he still acted selfishly. He is a distraction when the team should be focused on preparing for this critical game. Good thing he has common sense to seek help and did not harm anybody. BB is doing what he must for his team and for Jones. Maybe he will be compassionate with Jones but he is known not to coddle his players. But he will exclude the media out of this. They ask dumb questions which in their dumbness do not realize that they’re dumb. More than likely they are still wondering why BB told them that he could Xerox them a copy of the game plan.
    Oh… Haters are still losers.

  47. There really is no secret what happened with both Belichick and Chandlers Jones! They got into a fight, Bill got a black eye and Chandler got the stuffing knocked out of him and was dilerious! Man, it is so obvious this is what happened!

  48. We all understand that he doesn’t want to say anything that might help an opponent – but, damn, Bill, do you always have to be such a jackhole about it?

A simple, “We haven’t decided yet.” would have sufficed, but no, you had to go jackhole.

  49. rjpats says:

    Using Xerox as a verb

    Nice

You must be young if you think this is noteworthy. Back in the day Xerox was the only major manufacturer of copying machines and using it as a verb was utterly standard.

And yet again, people make presumptions based on transcripts and their pre-determined attitudes toward Belichick. The reporter in question, Mike Reiss, thought the comment was funny. He gets along well with Belichick. This is what he said afterward on Twitter:

“It’s all good. There is a lot that people don’t see behind the scenes as it relates to coach-reporter dynamic.”
