Report: 49ers down to Chip Kelly or Mike Shanahan

LANDOVER, MD - SEPTEMBER 09: Head coach Mike Shanahan (L) of the Washington Redskins and head coach Chip Kelly of the Philadelphia Eagles shake hands after an NFL game at FedExField on September 9, 2013 in Landover, Maryland. The 49ers are narrowing down their coaching search to a couple of former head coaches.

San Francisco will likely choose between Chip Kelly and Mike Shanahan, with a decision coming within the next 24 hours, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Both Kelly and Shanahan have had some success as head coaches, although both were fired from their most recent jobs, Kelly in Philadelphia and Shanahan in Washington. In San Francisco, big questions would include whether they can get along with owner Jed York and G.M. Trent Baalke (something Jim Harbaugh couldn’t do), and whether they believe they can get Colin Kaepernick back on track or whether they’re going to look for a new franchise quarterback.

The 49ers were reportedly interested in Hue Jackson, who was hired by the Browns yesterday. They may choose either Kelly or Shanahan by tomorrow.

I see a Super Bowl in the near future. Oh, I mean they are hosting one, in their stadium, not actually playing in one.

More fuel for the dumpster fire.

  4. simplesimon1 says: Jan 14, 2016 12:51 PM

Don’t be stupid 49ers. Your team is not suited for Chip Kelly but perfectly suited for the run scheme of Shanahan.

  5. philyeagles5 says: Jan 14, 2016 12:51 PM

Jackson chose the Browns over the 49ers? that speaks volumes about York and Baalke.

  6. eetadick says: Jan 14, 2016 12:52 PM

Welp! 49ers can only go up from here, so there’s that

  7. PriorKnowledge says: Jan 14, 2016 12:53 PM

Why would you chose an NFL failure as opposed to a 2-time SB winning coach?

  8. fumblenuts says: Jan 14, 2016 12:54 PM

Shanahan would be the BEST fit for QB Blaine Gabbert. Trade Colin Kaepernick for a bag of rocks.

  9. armchairqb says: Jan 14, 2016 12:55 PM

How in the hell does Kelly even get mentioned in the same sentence as Shanahan? That is so odd.

  10. scoops1 says: Jan 14, 2016 12:56 PM

    is Tony D’Amato available???

  11. ctiggs says: Jan 14, 2016 12:56 PM

I’d take either over Tomsula. Can either coache’s ego work with baalke and York? Can either bring in Free Agents after their last debacles? Guess we will find out. #GoNiners #Nobodyhasitbetter

    _____________

Shanahan was only winning superbowls when Denver was cheating the salary cap. He was a disaster in Washington

IT WILL BE THE ONE WHO IS MOST DESPERATE TO TAKE A JOB!

  14. killitandeatit says: Jan 14, 2016 12:58 PM

If they hire Chip it is because Shanny said “stuff it” to how Dumb and Dumber want the command structure to work.

  15. key2heat says: Jan 14, 2016 12:58 PM

hmm do 49er fans want a dookie sandwich or a turd sandwich?

  16. eagleswin says: Jan 14, 2016 12:58 PM

I thought the 49ers were only looking for coaches who wouldn’t try to make a power play for the GM spot? Is this opposite day?

  17. northpackalacky says: Jan 14, 2016 12:59 PM

I have to admit I’d be interested to see what Chip Kelly’s offense could do with Kaepernik and Hyde.

  18. patslaya says: Jan 14, 2016 12:59 PM

Guess they are trying to get the first pick in the 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020,…drafts.

  19. niners816 says: Jan 14, 2016 12:59 PM

It’s a decoy. They are really bringing back Jim Tomsula without his mustache. They are going to introduce him as: Tim Jomsula. I hope they at least bring in Shanahan.

  20. bobthebillsfan says: Jan 14, 2016 12:59 PM

I can’t see Kelly getting along with either Jed York or Trent Baalke. This is not a slam on anyone, just an honest opinion.

  21. braceyourselffor12 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:00 PM

Somehow I feel the front office will screw this up. And with Baalke’s draft record it displays York’s questionable judgement who favored a sycophant over an elite head coach.

  22. ninjapleazee says: Jan 14, 2016 1:00 PM

Chip can take kilo Alonzo, Demarco Murray, Ryan Matthews, and all his other failed trades and signings with him. Blew up the Eagles and got canned.

  23. jjfootball says: Jan 14, 2016 1:01 PM

WHO’S GOT IT BETTER THEN THE 49ERS, EVERYBODY!

  24. ninozlatino says: Jan 14, 2016 1:01 PM

I wouldn’t mind Chip getting another shot. Because if he goes to the 49ers and treats the players the same and learned nothing from his time in Philly, he won’t get a 3rd. It’s back to college.

  25. sbmcintosh36 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:02 PM

Because Shanahan hasn’t done anything since that Elway guy retired

  26. laces out says: Jan 14, 2016 1:02 PM

    yeesh!

  27. NinersRule says: Jan 14, 2016 1:02 PM

A least with Chip Kelly you have a chance to excite the fan base a little bit.

Seriously– What football fan in America would be excited if their team hired Mike Shanahan at this stage in his career??

I’d BY FAR rather bring Marty Schottenheimer out of retirement.

Schottenheimer is a wiz with reclamation projects — even if he stinks in the playoffs.

  28. Vir Publius says: Jan 14, 2016 1:03 PM

The NFC East is pretty fantastic, so makes sense to go after their coaches.

  29. bayousooner90 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:03 PM

49ers are looking at the wrong end of the barrel. These 2 guys will not take them higher than the 20th pick in the draft.

Kelly is not suited for the NFL
Shanahan can’t win with out Elway

  30. thedom2424 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:04 PM

“Welp! 49ers can only go up from here, so there’s that”

You’d be surprised. Futility can last for a loooooong time.

  31. clevelandrocksyourface says: Jan 14, 2016 1:04 PM

Chip (what a silly name for a grown man) played the Browns in order to leverage Philly. Now look at him. Begging for a job with a bottom feeder after failing so miserably and completely wrecking the Eagles “Dream Team”.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Reap what you’ve sown Chipster. Reap it.

  32. Wisconsin's Favorite Son Jeffrey Be Dahmed says: Jan 14, 2016 1:04 PM

“Welp! 49ers can only go up from here, so there’s that”.

You must not have seen what Kelly did to the Eagles. He can take the 49ers lower. Trust me.

  35. PegulaBucks says: Jan 14, 2016 1:05 PM

So you cant get along with Harbs but you can with Chip….believe that when i see it.

  36. joenash72 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:06 PM

    Marv Levy is still available😉

  37. rajbais says: Jan 14, 2016 1:09 PM

So it boils down to “Dumb and Dumber.”

Kelly is a fake smart person. If he’s so smart, he would have started Mathews over Murray, have better people skills, and care about time of possession.

  38. babyjesus69 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:10 PM

    1) You can’t blame Shanahan for his WAS time. He wanted Cousins to play all along. rg3 was shoved down his throat by Snyder.
    2) Sure he only won a Super Bowl with Elway. But Walsh also only won with Montana. Bellicheck with Brady.

  39. bigmark67 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:10 PM

All I can say as a Raider fan is…….
    HaHahahAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Niners suck!

  40. donniedarko49ers says: Jan 14, 2016 1:13 PM

To be clear, Jackson did not turn down the 49ers. The Browns are the only team that offered Jackson a contract. The NYG didn’t even get to interview Jackson.

  41. corporatemediaprostitute says: Jan 14, 2016 1:13 PM

Shanahan has determined that Kaepernick is healthy and ready to start getting hit.

  42. mrbigass says: Jan 14, 2016 1:14 PM

Either one would be awesome to watch burn it down……

  43. In Teddy We Trust says: Jan 14, 2016 1:15 PM

Well, we won’t have to worry about the 49ers as a contender for a while.

  44. tommyribs says: Jan 14, 2016 1:18 PM

What’s Behind Door #3?, every Niners fan is asking.

  45. Kenny Lutz says: Jan 14, 2016 1:20 PM

In what world is Chip Kelly a “Failed” NFL coach?
He took over a 4-12 Eagles team and went back to back 10 win seasons. He had 1 bad year he gets fired and all of a sudden he is failed? Look, he showed up in philly and got rid of some absolute jerks on that team. He shipped out desean jackson (jerk) shipped out mccoy (jerk). Those players are the ones who are toxic, not chip. But anyone who thinks a failed NFl coach is 2 playoff appearances a div title and back to back 10 win seasons in 3 seasons doesn’t know much about football. All I will say in negative is he is NOT an NFL GM.

  46. jjfootball says: Jan 14, 2016 1:21 PM

THEY CALL THEMSELVES THE FAITHFUL (LOL!)
THAT’S WHY THE STADIUM WAS HALF EMPTY LAST SEASON.

  47. catfish252 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:21 PM

Flip a coin, either coach will bring about the same results.

  48. Kenny Lutz says: Jan 14, 2016 1:22 PM

Also I don’t think the 49ers are choosing between the 2 coaches. I think they are choosing what they wanna do with Kap. If they keep Kap they hire chip. If they want to release him they hire Shannahan. I doubt the coaches have much to do with this decision IMO.

  49. clk320cpe says: Jan 14, 2016 1:22 PM

“Kelly is not suited for the NFL
Shanahan can’t win with out Elway”

Well played sir, very well played. Cannot say it better.

  50. Kenny Lutz says: Jan 14, 2016 1:23 PM

Also Shannahan 24-40 in 4 years as washington head coach. Chip Kelly 27-21 in 3 years. You tell me who has most recently “failed”

  51. lesliehoerwinkle says: Jan 14, 2016 1:23 PM

Shanahan’s insistence that they include Depends for him in his contract may be a deal killer.

  52. yorkmustgo says: Jan 14, 2016 1:23 PM

I can see a Chip Kelly hiring turning into ThunderDome with Trent Baalke fairly quickly.

  53. axesbluestar says: Jan 14, 2016 1:25 PM

Hire the corpse of Vince Lombardi. You could hardly do worse.

  54. 16nyniner80 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:27 PM

Go BIG or GO HOME! Bring in Chip and pair him with Kaep.
    Let the hating resume.

    Go Niners!

  55. numerouno49erfan says: Jan 14, 2016 1:29 PM

Can you please at least interview Mike Shula? Please!?!

  56. brenenostler says: Jan 14, 2016 1:30 PM

Dang, say what you want about them as head coaches, but this is interesting to say the least

  57. jkautz11 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:30 PM

Shanahan found Jay Cutler & Kirk Cousins. Believed in them when no one else wouldn’t. He was forced to bring in RGIII even with plans for Cousins. He’ll find another diamond in the rough QB for the niners. I can guarantee it. Chip Kelly is no Mike Shanahan

  58. jsm11 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:31 PM

So Stanford doesn’t want the job either?

  59. mandings36 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:39 PM

Can this now be the worst situation/coaching opening in the NFL?

Or was this the worst all along?

  60. Kenny Lutz says: Jan 14, 2016 1:41 PM

    They Hire CHIP!

  61. raiderrob21 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:42 PM

So, die by lethal injection or the gas chamber?

  62. inozwetrust says: Jan 14, 2016 2:17 PM

Coach won’t matter. In a division as talented as the NFC West, the niners will be irrelevant for a long time
