Report: Browns want Ray Horton for DC, Titans may not let him go

The Browns have hired Hue Jackson as their new head coach and now they have to go through the process of filling out his coaching staff.

Their first choice for defensive coordinator may not be available, however. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Jackson would like Titans defensive coordinator Ray Horton to come to Cleveland to fill the same role, but that it is uncertain whether the Titans will grant him permission to leave. Teams can block assistants under contract from making moves to any position with another team other than head coach.

That decision may be in limbo because the Titans haven’t picked their own head coach yet. Interim coach Mike Mularkey is reportedly a strong candidate to get the job on a permanent basis and a decision to stand pat on that front might make Horton’s return more likely.

If Horton does end up making the move, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s served as the Browns’ defensive coordinator. He held the job during the 2013 season and moved to Tennessee after the Browns fired head coach Rob Chudzinski after one season in the job.

Hue is building Bengals North which is fine if they are committed to knocking out a few Steelers twice a year.

Great DC, would be a tremendous hire for Cleveland, has improved defenses everywhere he has been a coordinator.

Browns finished with a top 10 defense with Ray Horton as DC that year. Remember being underwhelmed with him though.

That 2013 defense had a lot of talent, most of which is gone now and wasnt really replaced, ie. TJ Ward, Jabal Sheard, D’Qwell Jackson, Buster Skrine, Ahtyba Rubin, Phil Taylor.

Horton is probably hoping the Titans say ‘No’, so he doesn’t have to say it himself!

Not letting him talk to other teams would be HARSH given new head coaches almost always clean house.

Interesting that a non-real nfl team has won four nfl championships…weird.

if the browns land him, wouldnt this be the second time he has been their D Coordinator?

  15. bensstinkyfingers says: Jan 14, 2016 4:56 PM

Well if Horton can’t come maybe, they can dip into the ex -cleve coaching well, and bring back legendary D coordinator Rob Ryan with his mystifying magical mullet. On a serious note, Dick Lebeau would be an excellent choice , if he is still alive?

Get it done Hue and Jimmy! Come back home Ray and have a chance to finish what you started before! I like it.

So the “try to un do everything Joe Banner Screwed up” tour continues for Cleveland. This kinda sorta but not really rebuild is very intriguing. Take all the assistant coaches that actually did well and keep them and now take one from a few years ago that really shouldn’t have gotten fired and (attempt to) bring him back.

You’ve got to give Haslam credit. Every move he’s done pretty much says “I screwed up and I’m going to fix it”. Let’s see Jerry Jones actually admit he made a mistake.

Horton was an assistant DC this year in Tennessee..

The defense was really dissapointing this year. Whoever traded those guys on defense had to go. I’m all for continuity but we obviously needed them. I think Haslam hated to but he had to clean house again. I hope this Hue guy gets a few years to put something great together.
