Tom Coughlin pulls out of Eagles search

Tom Coughlin AP

Tom Coughlin will not be the next head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Coughlin is withdrawing his name from consideration for the Eagles job. Schefter reports that it’s not the right fit.

The question is whether Coughlin decided on his own that it’s not the right fit, or whether Coughlin decided it’s not the right fit only when he realized that the Eagles are planning to hire someone else. Coughlin and the Giants also spun his departure from the Giants as a resignation, even though it is clear that the Giants’ ownership nudged him out.

The Eagles have also interviewed Doug Pederson, Pat Shurmur and Duce Staley for their coaching vacancy. It is unknown whether they plan any other interviews.

    Wow. So much for that.

I’m glad Coughlin bowed out, it was a horrible match.

Now go interview McDermott when he’s available. I’m not saying the Eagles need to hire him but to exclude him from even being a candidate was stupid. There have to be a few other OC or DC out there who deserve at least an interview.

I think Coughlin should take his talents to Cinicnati. That would be a perfect Fit. Just my Opnion though

Coughlin going to the Eagles would at least have provided some juice for NBC NFC East Sunday Night Football.

Is this “I’m not the right fit” or is it, “damn, the Eagles can’t even get Coughlin.”

Either way, as long as Roseman is there, there options are limited.

Heard on radio that Coughlin was the leading candidate. The radio wouldn’t lie to me, would it?

  22. sixchr says: Jan 14, 2016 1:06 PM

I understand that he wants to keep coaching but why should anyone even consider him? He’s going to be 70. Unless he ends up in a win-now place like Green Bay it’ll take him 2-4 years to get a program going.

  25. rajbais says: Jan 14, 2016 1:07 PM

Thanks a to Jeffrey Lurie, the presence of Howie Roseman is scaring off coaches.

There’s no other way to explain this.

  26. trickbunny says: Jan 14, 2016 1:09 PM

What kind of world is this where the Browns actually get a reputable guy who they wanted right away and the Eagles get friend-zoned by a 70 year old?

    Love it.

  27. kneedragr says: Jan 14, 2016 1:10 PM

    Hire Duce Staley, ROFL!

  28. goodellsucks43 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:11 PM

Good, Coughlin was too young anyway. Now the Eagles are free to hire Marv Levy!

  29. jpk6044 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:11 PM

Simple: Coughlin would rather retire than report to Howie Roseman. Don’t blame him, either.

  30. Regassert6 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:12 PM

The issue is either Roseman or no one else believes in Bradford. And there is basically no way to get a better QB for 2016 right now.

  31. jvw1982 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:12 PM

They need to wait for Shula, I think he is one of the top 3 prospects coming into this off season, don’t rush to hire someone wait for the right person and fit…..

  37. ctiggs says: Jan 14, 2016 1:18 PM

  38. 23rdusernameused says: Jan 14, 2016 1:18 PM

Toms next stop is gonna be the prestigious coach of the sunny day retirement home flag football team.
he’s very excited for this opportunity!

  39. wallabear says: Jan 14, 2016 1:19 PM

Titans need to get on the phone now with Coughlin. Keeping Mularkey is the wrong move, and for Kevin Mawae (former TTs Center) to recommend Doug Marrone, who quit on the Buffalo Bills as head coach, is just ridiculous. There’s a bright future ahead for Marcus Mariota, but only with the right coach. Like Whisenhunt, Mularkey kept Nos.24 & 25 (Sensabaugh & Wreh-Wilson) on the field, and as a result, the Titans continued to lose. Give the TTs a shot, Tom.

  40. profootballgossipping says: Jan 14, 2016 1:19 PM

I will not up and root for a new team, but I will no longer root for the Eagles while Howie Roseman is employed there. What has that smug little sh*t ever accomplished? NOTHING!

It baffles me how he is still with the team, Lurie needs to shape up.

  41. philyeagles5 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:19 PM

the only guy is really dont want is Shurmur. im assuming he didnt call any of the plays or even have a say in the offense, but i dont want anyone associated with Chip Kelly. i want traditional football in Philly back.

Why can’t a soon to be 70-year old realize it’s time to stop along the road, buy some nightcrawlers, and take your grandson to the local fishing pond? You’ve had a marvelous run, Tom. Now it’s someone else’s turn.

  49. pv1960 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:25 PM

The fairy owner is the only one who can’t see that Howard Weiner Roseman is a bigger cancer than Chip Kelly.

  50. exsquidao says: Jan 14, 2016 1:26 PM

I say this a 53 yr old white guy, I’m sorry but Tom needs to hang it up, he’s had a full life in the game and he needs to “get off the lawn” and let other younger guys have the opportunity, same thing for Shanny especially more so since he sucks as well as being a dinosaur.

  51. staffordsyear says: Jan 14, 2016 1:28 PM

I’m one of the few defenders of Jim Caldwell but I would take Coughlin as head coach tomorrow.

  52. nicopenelope says: Jan 14, 2016 1:28 PM

Why would a coach with his resume want to coach a team with a lousy QB situation.

  53. liongator says: Jan 14, 2016 1:28 PM

Last two coaches had winning records and got fired.
So if you lose, you get fired. If you win, you get fired. Who would want that job?

    Oh wait….

  63. youdrivemenutseagles says: Jan 14, 2016 1:39 PM

Pederson, Shurmur and Duce Staley, huh? All right then. Perhaps a low key hire is the best route given the last guy.

  64. bleedeaglegreen says: Jan 14, 2016 1:40 PM

Ugh this one HURTS! Having a real NFL coach that has won Lombardi’s & understands the amount of work, dedication & commitment it takes to get there working with what would end up being a younger & hungrier team, for them to at least have Tom to LEARN from.
Timing is everything of course & very few times does your franchise have an opening where one hire of an individual that has so much wisdom to impart becomes available at the same time you need it!! The guy we could have had is 2 time SB winning coach in a structured system with a established GM. Also Coughlin was/is coach that in Jax set up a brand new franchise from the ground up in the 90’s & took them to back to back AFC championship games as coach. All Lurie had was a to take advantage of what had been essentially dropped in his lap.
He didn’t & the future ain’t gonna be good bird fans. UGH.

  65. eaglerome says: Jan 14, 2016 1:40 PM

Get McDermott adn hire Pederson as OC. See what happens….I like Tom, even though his teams didn’t make the playoffs 6 of the last 7. Giants are always competitive, had winning records in two of those non-playoff years and I always felt like they were lacking talent and overachieving. Wouldn’t of minded his hiring, but okay with not getting him too.

  66. jmc8888 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:41 PM

Coughlin looks like the game has past him by. He’s getting slower mentally. His awareness level is dropping. That’s not good for a coach. It means a lot will get past him, so when things are working, he’ll be less apt to recognize it, and when things aren’t, same thing.

This really isn’t a good year for needing a coach. Hue Jackson was probably the best name floating out there, and that’s not saying much.

Duce Staley is an unknown. Formerly good player, now assistant coach. Might be one of those guys you take a chance on.

Coughlin though, despite the erosion of his coaching skills, is still better then most of the candidates out there. 49ers should look at him over the two guys they are currently looking at.

A diminished Coughlin is still better then Chip Kelly or Mike Shanahan… but that doesn’t mean it would be a good hire.

At least the Eagles are showing the world they are better at the coach searching process then the 49ers.

  67. Chris says: Jan 14, 2016 1:42 PM

Howie Roseman is never the right fit with anyone.

  68. chrisk61 says: Jan 14, 2016 1:42 PM

    birds playin everybody.

    forced jints to grab McAdoo.

eagles have wanted Pederson with shurmur as contingency since day 1

McAdoo, philbin and spagnuolo is a xmas gift for the rest of the nfc east. jerry jones GM and room in dallas are too. even better if cowboys grab manziel and/or AP.

nfc east will be between wash and phila for the foreseeable future.

may be time for mara to sell giants. he has lost his executive ability to allocate resources ie pick good GM and HC.

  71. thetooloftools says: Jan 14, 2016 2:06 PM

Congratulations on running Andy Reid off.
The loud mouth Philly fans and screaming media honks got what thy wanted.
    How’s that tasting?
Oh… and you can see the loser coach you ran off on the sidelines of a huge playoff game this weekend coaching the hottest team in the NFL in case you wonder where he went.

  72. bleedgreen33 says: Jan 14, 2016 2:09 PM

I’m glad he bowed out. Did we really want a 70 year old coach who has missed the postseason 6 of the last 7 years? Come on people! Now let’s go get McDermott!

  73. eagles512 says: Jan 14, 2016 2:10 PM

What an embarrassing coaching search. They want a head start and then lose the guy they wanted a head start with to Miami. Then they interview a bunch of guys no one else has interest in. Then try to talk to Jackson when he’s about to go to Cleveland after ignoring him prior. Then settle on McAdoo who goes back to NY. Then Coughlin takes himself out. Bottom line is no one wants to work with Roseman and Lurie is too obsessed with him to realize it. They’d still be in good shape if Roseman didn’t fire Kelly’s personnel guy. That’s when Kelly made a play for control and went overboard with the moves.

  74. inozwetrust says: Jan 14, 2016 2:10 PM

I think the Eagles want to go younger. Besides, he would have to coach against the Giants twice a year – too weird!!

  78. owljazzera says: Jan 14, 2016 2:29 PM

Unless they go with Shurmur, odds are the Eagles wont have the worst coach in the NFC East when you have to compete with Bob McAdoo, Jerruh’s red headed puppet and Jon Gruden’s fatter brother.

  79. patslaya says: Jan 14, 2016 2:29 PM

If only Mr. Kelly would have pulled out Chip never would have been around to put the Eagles in the position they are in now.

  85. wnadler says: Jan 14, 2016 2:40 PM

Him bowing out just means Staley is out too. All he would have been is a guy to groom him. Shurmur was a curtsy interview so that leaves just one guy. If they really wanted him I think they would have pulled that trigger yesterday. Please time to start calling Chan Gailey or Joe Vitt.

Any dc will look good with the players the head coach and gm drafted.. McDermott is not hc material period. Not to mention car defense has always been respectable.. philly fans need to remember how horrible there d was when he was dc blown coverages all over the place.
