Ben Roethlisberger listed as questionable, DeAngelo Williams ruled out

Ben Roethlisberger, John Harbaugh AP

The Steelers have been dealing with injuries to their starting quarterback, starting running back and best receiver this week and they’ve announced that two of the three won’t be playing against the Broncos on Sunday afternoon.

Wide receiver Antonio Brown was ruled out early in the day on Friday because of a concussion and running back DeAngelo Williams has now been scratched as well. Williams missed last weekend’s win with an injured foot and was never given much of a chance to play this week.

That leaves quarterback Ben Roethlisberger as the only member of the trio with a chance to play this weekend and the team has listed him as questionable. Roethlisberger rested his injured right shoulder for most of the week, which limited his practice activity to handing the ball off for the most part. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports that he threw the ball briefly on Friday, however.

Roethlisberger’s history and his return to last week’s game after hurting the shoulder suggest that he’ll play. Without Brown and Williams available, the Steelers will need him to play at a high level if they’re going to extend their season for another week.

It’s a shame that a playoff team is suddenly without most of their offense. But this team doesn’t deserve to be in the super bowl….so whatever.

why bother even playing this game ??!!

  3. johnnybaggadonuts says: Jan 15, 2016 12:57 PM

I’m a Broncos fan and this is terrible news. Really wanted to face a full strength (or as close as possible) Steelers team. When these two teams are firing on all cylinders, it tends to be a fantastic game.

Now about that apology Mr. Jones.

  4. tomtravis76 says: Jan 15, 2016 12:58 PM

Have to have all 3 QBs active and put in Vick packages to give Ben some rest throughout the game. That Denver D is going to be coming at him hard all game.

  5. bettis3636 says: Jan 15, 2016 12:58 PM

It’s a damn shame that D Will put in so much work and silenced his critics ALL YEAR LONG… Then one trash time game against Cleveland has cost him a shot at the playoffs this year… GET WELL D WILL!!

  6. Steeley McBeam says: Jan 15, 2016 12:59 PM

For the people who ask “what does Tomlin do?” this is what he does — he gets his teams who everybody outside of Pittsburgh thinks has no shot, for one reason or another, to step all the way up in critical situations like this. Hes a motivator and a leader. He may have the clock management skills of a Comcast rep but there’s no doubt the team will follow him into darkness and play their heart out for him, Bell, AB and the rest of the guys who can’t do it themselves.

Have some faith because this is where Tomlin shines.

  8. tavisteelersfan says: Jan 15, 2016 1:05 PM

I think we have to count on 9 points off the Steelers defence along with 3-4 hard sacks of Manning, plus some good return play and the Steelers have this one in the bag.

Everyone should he healthy for the Championship Game.

Great. Now Bungles fans can throw that block party to celebrate

they show Big Ben on the screen.

  11. peytonwantsaflag says: Jan 15, 2016 1:09 PM

If the league truly cared about the health of its players they would’ve tested roethlisberger last week after the game to see what kind of drugs they put him on after his cart ride to the locker room.

You could see it in his eyes, totally spaced out. That’s why they pulled him abruptly from the tv interview after the game

  12. jobotjones says: Jan 15, 2016 1:09 PM

    @Steele McBean

Im a lifelong steelers fan but Tomlin sucks and is basically a joke of a coach. He rides the coattails of very talented offensive weapons and a great defensive system he inherited.

Announced as ruled out means just that. Mort and Rapoport aren’t reporting this the Steelers have officially ruled them out.

Pacman should be announcing his apology tour dates anytime now. What a clueless buffoon, like AB would miss practice to help sell a call they already got. Samething with the nonsense about Gronkowski in the Saturday AFC game. On another article here there are fools contending he was held out of practice as part of some elaborate scheme. No one is going to sit one of their most important players out of practice before a playoff game without damn good cause.

  22. steelcurtainn says: Jan 15, 2016 1:18 PM

  27. rogerdw66 says: Jan 15, 2016 1:27 PM

Well, it’s not the Pats, so I guess you can believe it. I’m sure the Broncos “Mad Dog” Blitz will take it easy on Ben. Don’t worry, plenty of healing time for him after this one.

  29. royallycheefy says: Jan 15, 2016 1:29 PM

Denver is going to come at whoever their QB is. If it’s Ben, I hope they protect him, because Denver likes to hit QB’s late. Von Miller is notorious for things like that.

  30. dimi1919 says: Jan 15, 2016 1:33 PM

As a steeler fan, I must say the Broncos fans and players have shown nothing but class this week. Unlike another team who hasn’t won a playoff game in 25 years. Well done.

  31. dickroy says: Jan 15, 2016 1:34 PM

This will be a real test for the Steelers. It is obvious they will need the other three receives to step up and the two TNT running backs to play like they did in Cincinnati. The defense will need turnovers, but the key to a victory will be the offensive line play! Protect Ben and run block!

Get well Antonio, if we get through this game we will need you next week.

  34. Deb says: Jan 15, 2016 1:37 PM

I think Ben will play if humanly possible because we don’t have a viable backup. It’s frustrating how may times the Steelers have been in this position. Roethlisberger is not indestructible–no matter what he thinks and no matter what the coaches think. Batch was a solid backup–how I miss Charlie! And Gradkowski is reliable. I appreciate that Tomlin thought he had a good replacement when he brought in Vick. But when that didn’t work out, the team should have found someone else. Jones is terrible–and we’ve known that for a while now.

How I wish we had a McCarron or an Osweiler. Or a Matt Hasselbeck.

Bronco fan here – Ben will play & it’s not like the other receivers are scrubs off the street. They are pretty good too although AB is the best in the NFL. Their RB’s didn’t play poorly last week either so I think the Steelers still have a shot to win. Denver, unlike last year, will not overlook this game. It will still be close & I can’t wait.

I don’t like dirty players, but I’m glad the Steelers got a dose of their own medicine against Cincy. James Harrison for one, was always looking to hit players when they were down or vulnerable and cause concussions. Not to mention some of their other dirty players.

    Nope.

Chiefs gave Denver a good old fashioned butt kicking. Denver turned the ball over 5 times and still beat San Diego. Denver turned it over by Manning throwing 4 (I think) picks and lost at home to KC.

KC was the better team that day, I speak for all Bronco fans when I say I’d love another crack at the Chiefs to try and wash out the bad taste of that game. Gotta beat the Steelers first.

  47. rankster1950 says: Jan 15, 2016 2:03 PM

  48. jason9696 says: Jan 15, 2016 2:04 PM

I appreciate the fact that some of you Denver fans are saying you’d rather play a full strength Steelers squad…it’s admirable.

As a Steelers fan, with these injuries, I’m already mentally preparing myself for an unsatisfactory and boring blowout loss in Denver. You’ve got 3 all-stars out (4 if you count Le’Veon) and honestly…the Bills and the twin-dummies Bungle-Brothers, Burfeict and Jones got us here. Not our stellar play.

I don’t even think it’ll be a close. It’ll be a Peyton statement game showing the world that he’s still got it. That Denver D is going to make it a long day for young Landry Jones.

In the end, if the Steelers do fall, Hopefully Peyton gets to see KC come to his house the week after and then Peyton gets to go to the big show one final time…

    (Go Chiefs)

Moronic statement. Those “doses of their own medicine” cost the Bungles their entire season…was it worth it?

Yes, Harrison was know for hard hits…but he hasn’t been fined since 2011. Players can learn and change. Burfeict and Pin-Head Pacman need to adapt as well, otherwise they will keep losing critical games due to their own stupidity…

Thanks to the classy Denver fans on this site. Sad that Brown and Williams aren’t playing, they gave 110% all year long and were the best at their positions.

Hoping Ben can play, but truthfully it’s not worth the potential of continued damage to an already injured shoulder.

If we do lose, I’m really pulling for Denver, because I’d like to see Peyton win another Ring before he retires. He’s always been a class act.

TO the classless, low life Steeler haters, it’s pathetic that you weren’t taught better. It’s a game, and the sooner you learn to win with class, as well as lose with it, the better off you’ll be.
