Brady’s ankle gets overlooked in Gronk injury mania

AP

Some think the Patriots are deliberately overstating the injury status of tight end Rob Gronkowski. The Patriots could be doing that in order to confuse the Chiefs regarding whether and to what extent Gronkowski will be able to play.

The Patriots also could be trying to keep attention away from the status of quarterback Tom Brady’s ankle.

Brady injured the ankle 12 days ago against the Dolphins, thanks to a low hit from Miami defensive lineman Olivier Vernon. The injury was bad enough to have Brady hobbling away from his press conference after the game, but his status has been lost in the shuffle ever since.

Brady, according to the Patriots, fully participated in practice all week despite the injury, and he’s officially listed as probable. But if his mobility is limited, that could be a problem for the Patriots.

With the media and fans focusing on Gronkowski’s status, Brady is presumed to be fine. He possibly isn’t, which would give the Patriots another reason to make Gronkowski’s status seem more tenuous than it may be.

  1. The Patriots can do nothing right in the eyes of the outside world………we report….we don’t report …..we talk ….we talk to much…we don’t say enough…..give me a freaking break…..If we beat KC that’s five straight title games…DEAL WITH IT

  2. “The Patriots could be doing that in order to confuse the Patriots”
What?! The patriots confusing themselves. That darn ol slimeball Belichick confusing himself. Isn’t that against the rules? We need a full on investigation led by dictator GODell and his minion Ted Wells

  3. Thank GOD the game is tomorrow….all this “who’s hurt & how bad crap” is getting old…. The injury reports are out…. NUFF SAID already….
    Go Pats!!!!

  4. So you story here is: It is possible that Brady is still injured, though you have no evidence of it.

It’s also possible that Gronk isn’t injured (as much as people think), though you have no evidence of it.

    Now that’s some quality journalism.

  5. Even Freud was forced to admit sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. As long as it bears his weight Brady’s ankle is not much of an issue. The guy is hardly a gazelle under the best of circumstance, running isn’t part of his game. If that was Smith’s ankle there might be a story here but it’s not so, yeah, it’s just a cigar.

  6. Actually according to the Patriot-hating conspiracy theorists, it’s not Gronk’s injury that was the distraction – it was Chandler Jones, perfectly implementing a “scandal” to make the Chiefs overlook Brady’s hurt ankle

Also – FYI – if the Chiefs lose it’s only because Belichick played Jedi Mind tricks on the officials, violating a rule that will be established by the 3rd clone of Roger Goodell in 2145 – thus invalidating all previous Super Bowls Belichik won due to “cheating” a rule that would one day exist

(and yes, Belichick CAN travel through time – which is why the Super Bowls from 2001-2004 are invalid given the fact that Belichick KNEW he was breaking a new 2006 rule)

Or at least, that’s what the Haters have lead me to believe

  7. This season cannot end soon enough..so little football so much everything else, any story gets buried in hate and debating football is now lost under who cheated

  8. You Patriot fans act as if your team’s performance (excellent over the past decade plus) is somehow a reflection of you. Let me be the first to tell you… It is not. You are fans. No smarter, no more passionate, no more anything other than smug in your portrayal of who you are and in denial that your team is anything other than perfect. What Florio pointed out could very well be the case. Deal with it. Embrace it. Acknowledge it. Stop acting like YOU are something more than you are other than fans. This doesn’t apply to all Patriot fans but, I would say most are of this thinking.

Seeing as the fans of other NFL teams can’t comprehend that cold air causes air pressure to drop (heck – not even Dean Blandino or Roger Goodell claim to know this) I’d have to say that the average Patriots fan is MUCH smarter

And don’t even start to try to explain to a non-Patriot fan why the violation of a new 2006 rule in the first half of the first game of 2007 does not make Super Bowls before that rule existed requiring that 2001-2004 Super Bowls require an “asterix”

Yeah – sorry, but kindof tough NOT to feel superior these days. It’s really not our fault though – you guys just make it SO easy!!! 🙂

Brady is such a drama queen

You stole your handle from one of my posts on a Pats vs Ravens game. That tells me all I need to know about you.

  12. The underlying assumption is that the Patriots must be doing something clever and nasty. Of course, it could also be the case that they’re just filling out the injury report per the rules…

  13. Enough with this nonsense! You call out Cris Carter (rightfully so) for spewing speculations as probabilities, so the least you could do here is stop assuming the Pats just must obviously be doing something.

Don’t Uggs make anything with better ankle support?

The only thing Big Ben hasn’t hurt this year are his cankles.

    Naturally protected.

  15. Brady is such a drama queen

If this was Big Ben I’m sure we’d never here the end of it from Pats fans.

Not to forget Big Ben has played in a tougher division and doesn’t cheat.

  16. Why not just say 11 of 12 Patriots players on the injury report are 2 body parts under the league minimum?

  17. For the record, Brady got injured on a low (but clean) hit from Suh. The Vernon hit, while way late and totally cheap, was in the midsection.

  18. No team, in the history of the NFL, has followed the rules as closely as NE.

Their sustained success, has spawned so much hatred and jealousy! Social media is the culprit here. Social media displays the ignorance and foolishness of Hater Nation.

    The Karma Train continues…

Did you all hear that Mort has stage 4 throat cancer?

He was respected up until the NFL and BSPN played him as a fool…

    Repent!

And you thinking that he “stole” his handle from you and that you’re the only person that could’ve thought it up tells us all we need to know about you and 99% of Patriots fans.

  20. Brady isn’t a mobile qb so the ankle injury doesn’t matter plus he’s had 2 weeks to heal up so I doubt it’s too serious. Stop with the bs and may the best team win tomorrow.

  21. “Does anyone know if Chandler Jones has been suspended? PCP gives one the strength of 10 men and is classified as a PED.”

    SMH

Morons on the internet claiming synthetic marijuana was pcp does not make it so.

Furthermore synthetic marijuana is not even a banned substance on the nfl list, and its not illegal in MA either except in the city of Boston, in which Foxboro is not located.

  22. Since this story attracts the usual Patriot trolls, will one of you FINALLY explain how the Colt’s footballs got below the legal PSI. If you can’t grow a pair and answer that, shut up once and for all!

  23. Although some players need to check there priorities… Coming from a Vikings fan- not in the playoffs yet some questionable players yet making plays in the games to come, minus the Bengals last week that deserve to be out! Lack of respect and discipline should have had an impact on the coaching staff!

Except it wasn’t PCP , or a banned substance. On the other hand Manning had a banned substance sent to his home, has he been suspended yet Or investigated yet?

  25. What the Patriots trying to deceive anyone the Patriots pushing the envelope please say it isn’t so lol

From a true football fan in the heart of Boston who values fair ethics go Kansas City

  26. Get your facts straight. It wasn’t Vernon. He hit Brady in the center of his back after the play was over (cheap shot) and illegal.
It was Suh who was partially engaged who went low on Brady and crunched him over back words and below his knees! That too could have been called a penalty because a hand had been placed across his face mask as he layer out to hit Brady. He was really trying to lay the wood on Brady.
At least get the facts straight!!!!!! Go review the game film!

  27. Neat how you refer to your own speculations with a “some thing” third-person link.

“Some people” think this is hack work. How about going back to actual reporting at some point?

“Of course, it could also be the case that they’re just filling out the injury report per the rules…”

Nah, don’t you know Mike and his buddies are sure that the Pats are constantly “pushing the envelope?”

That they’re just plain wrong explains why Belichick thinks the media is full of idiots who don’t deserve the time of day. Hard to respect people who cannot help but make continual, insulting, false accusations.

  28. headwoundharry says:

Does anyone know if Chandler Jones has been suspended? PCP gives one the strength of 10 men and is classified as a PED.

Well, since Cris Carter’s idle musings don’t count as evidence, no, Chandler Jones has not been suspended.

Get treatment for the head wound.

  29. Brady obviously isn’t known for his mobility, but I think people are under valuing the impact an injury might have on his footwork (which, as every dedicated fan knows, is crucial to the QB position). Although the KC pass rush disappears at times, getting to Brady early has historically given Patriot opponents the best chance to win.

That said, it’s very difficult to imagine that, even with a limited Brady, and an out Gronk, the Pats shouldn’t still be favored. I haven’t looked at the line, but if it’s lower than seven it’d be hard to pass on the Pats.

  30. Why would this confuse the Chiefs? If they prepare for Brady and Gronk as if healthy, then none of this matters to them.

  31. “The Patriots could be doing that in order to confuse the Chiefs regarding whether and to what extent Gronkowski will be able to play”
    ———————-
Oh, please. I’m a Pats fan, but that’s just insulting to Andy Reid. Do you really think Belichick thinks he can fool Andy Reid by playing games with how he lists who is on the injury list? Belichick and Reid are both first rate experienced coaches, and they are spending time planning plays and schemes and factors that will actually affect how the game is played; I very much doubt that that they think their time is well spent manipulating injury reports.

  32. The guy was a full participant all week, yet believe me I’m sure the Chiefs know he has a bad ankle…what difference does it make? They were going to try to hit him anyway. And they are going to try to hit Gronk too, I don’t think anyone is being mislead here.

And I do think Brady’s ankle is nowhere near 100%…that’s the type of season it’s been. A week ago the guy posted a picture on Facebook of him watching the game; what he didn’t realize is the wire that went to the device around his ankle was showing. He was on one of the muscle stimulant devices. I bet he’ll be at 70%.

  33. It got very little attention but Ndamukong Suh and Olivier Vernon got to him in the final game when the Dolphins smashed the Patriots. He has had 2 weeks to recover but the hobbling was for real – it was obvious that he was trying to hide it. Belichick is the best at diverting attention from injuries but Brady needed the extra week to recover from the high ankle sprain.
This may be a bigger deal than people realize.

  34. “Some think” no Mike – you think they are overstating it. There is no way they sit guys out of practice that are healthy enough to practice. Especially during playoff week after a bye. Total BS story.

Meanwhile last week Maclin was in tears. looked like he was done. He’s “questionable” and nobody bats an eye

    It’s good to be King

  37. Brady has high ankle sprain and Maclin has ” mild” ankle sprain. Though Brady has time to rest, he’s much older. Since the article is about probable hiding of injuries, which of these two is more hurt? One is behaving like it’s nothing, the other one seems to be hurt enough to possibly not play. Often it just is what it is. Nothing sinister about it.

Patriots motto: If you ain’t cheatin, you ain’t tryin.

    New to football I see,

As for whether those 49ers teams cheated, Montana restated, “If you ain’t cheatin’, you ain’t tryin’,” before adding, “You know, everybody does everything they can to possibly get a little bit of an edge. I mean, back then it wasn’t illegal but it was illegal, like our guys used to spray — and everybody did it at the time — silicone on their jerseys, the linemen, so that the defensive linemen couldn’t get a hold of them. And the defensive linemen did it so the offensive linemen couldn’t hold them. It’s a game. Everybody wants to win, so you do whatever you can to make it happen.”

So there you have it, straight from the mouth of the GOAT (for everyone who can’t claim Brady as their own).

Not that anyone needed confirmation about a certain Western PA team cheating.

  39. Ben comments on all of his injuries to give himself 2 outs:

    1. If he wins, he’s a battered and tough hero who rose above it all.

    2. If he loses, built in excuses are all around as to why.

    Kind of lame, really.

Brady does no such thing and has played with tons of injuries throughout his career. Mentally tougher. Ben wears the mental “skirt” in this regard.

Tomlin is not a strong enough coach to control his players or coaches, as evidenced by that debacle of a contest last week.

  40. Patriots motto: We’ve cheated so much, and for so long, why stop now?

While you’re busy checking your headsets, we’ve got a half dozen interns ransacking your hotel rooms looking for playbooks. Drones? Been using them for years, ever since we got caught for Spygate. Heck, we’ve got the visiting bench mic’ed up (never thought to look there, did you?). We put sleep hormones in the humidifiers of the visiting locker room. We have methods of cheating you haven’t even thought of yet. Remember the botched coin toss? Magnets.

makes even less sense than most of your posts. If what were Brady? This article is about how Brady isn’t 100% yet nobody is talking about it. The complete opposite of Ben.

  42. The low hit was due to a pats o-lineman grabbing Suh’s face mask then pulling/falling directing Suh into brady. And that’s what the call was for on his holding/face mask for that play no low hit.

OV had a questionable hit on brady in his back that was kind of late.

  43. Oh sorry Patriots, what you are witnessing is the decline of your franchise quarterback who was quire amazing over the last 15 years.

Better enjoy the fond memories because it will be 5-6 years of rebuilding. No QB = no success!!!

Start stockpiling your recordings of the Brady’s career because it is ending.
