Brady’s ankle gets overlooked in Gronk injury mania

Some think the Patriots are deliberately overstating the injury status of tight end Rob Gronkowski. The Patriots could be doing that in order to confuse the Chiefs regarding whether and to what extent Gronkowski will be able to play.

The Patriots also could be trying to keep attention away from the status of quarterback Tom Brady’s ankle.

Brady injured the ankle 12 days ago against the Dolphins, thanks to a low hit from Miami defensive lineman Olivier Vernon. The injury was bad enough to have Brady hobbling away from his press conference after the game, but his status has been lost in the shuffle ever since.

Brady, according to the Patriots, fully participated in practice all week despite the injury, and he’s officially listed as probable. But if his mobility is limited, that could be a problem for the Patriots.

With the media and fans focusing on Gronkowski’s status, Brady is presumed to be fine. He possibly isn’t, which would give the Patriots another reason to make Gronkowski’s status seem more tenuous than it may be.

So you story here is: It is possible that Brady is still injured, though you have no evidence of it.

It’s also possible that Gronk isn’t injured (as much as people think), though you have no evidence of it.

    Now that’s some quality journalism.

Even Freud was forced to admit sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. As long as it bears his weight Brady’s ankle is not much of an issue. The guy is hardly a gazelle under the best of circumstance, running isn’t part of his game. If that was Smith’s ankle there might be a story here but it’s not so, yeah, it’s just a cigar.

  18. j0esixpack says: Jan 15, 2016 8:21 PM

Actually according to the Patriot-hating conspiracy theorists, it’s not Gronk’s injury that was the distraction – it was Chandler Jones, perfectly implementing a “scandal” to make the Chiefs overlook Brady’s hurt ankle

Also – FYI – if the Chiefs lose it’s only because Belichick played Jedi Mind tricks on the officials, violating a rule that will be established by the 3rd clone of Roger Goodell in 2145 – thus invalidating all previous Super Bowls Belichik won due to “cheating” a rule that would one day exist

(and yes, Belichick CAN travel through time – which is why the Super Bowls from 2001-2004 are invalid given the fact that Belichick KNEW he was breaking a new 2006 rule)

Or at least, that’s what the Haters have lead me to believe

You Patriot fans act as if your team’s performance (excellent over the past decade plus) is somehow a reflection of you. Let me be the first to tell you… It is not. You are fans. No smarter, no more passionate, no more anything other than smug in your portrayal of who you are and in denial that your team is anything other than perfect. What Florio pointed out could very well be the case. Deal with it. Embrace it. Acknowledge it. Stop acting like YOU are something more than you are other than fans. This doesn’t apply to all Patriot fans but, I would say most are of this thinking.

Seeing as the fans of other NFL teams can’t comprehend that cold air causes air pressure to drop (heck – not even Dean Blandino or Roger Goodell claim to know this) I’d have to say that the average Patriots fan is MUCH smarter

And don’t even start to try to explain to a non-Patriot fan why the violation of a new 2006 rule in the first half of the first game of 2007 does not make Super Bowls before that rule existed requiring that 2001-2004 Super Bowls require an “asterix”

Get your facts straight. It wasn’t Vernon. He hit Brady in the center of his back after the play was over (cheap shot) and illegal.
It was Suh who was partially engaged who went low on Brady and crunched him over back words and below his knees! That too could have been called a penalty because a hand had been placed across his face mask as he layer out to hit Brady. He was really trying to lay the wood on Brady.
At least get the facts straight!!!!!! Go review the game film!

  66. discosucs2005 says: Jan 16, 2016 1:51 AM

Brady obviously isn’t known for his mobility, but I think people are under valuing the impact an injury might have on his footwork (which, as every dedicated fan knows, is crucial to the QB position). Although the KC pass rush disappears at times, getting to Brady early has historically given Patriot opponents the best chance to win.

That said, it’s very difficult to imagine that, even with a limited Brady, and an out Gronk, the Pats shouldn’t still be favored. I haven’t looked at the line, but if it’s lower than seven it’d be hard to pass on the Pats.

  67. pats14 says: Jan 16, 2016 2:29 AM

    ———————-
Oh, please. I’m a Pats fan, but that’s just insulting to Andy Reid. Do you really think Belichick thinks he can fool Andy Reid by playing games with how he lists who is on the injury list? Belichick and Reid are both first rate experienced coaches, and they are spending time planning plays and schemes and factors that will actually affect how the game is played; I very much doubt that that they think their time is well spent manipulating injury reports.

  72. doublebase says: Jan 16, 2016 7:52 AM

The guy was a full participant all week, yet believe me I’m sure the Chiefs know he has a bad ankle…what difference does it make? They were going to try to hit him anyway. And they are going to try to hit Gronk too, I don’t think anyone is being mislead here.

And I do think Brady’s ankle is nowhere near 100%…that’s the type of season it’s been. A week ago the guy posted a picture on Facebook of him watching the game; what he didn’t realize is the wire that went to the device around his ankle was showing. He was on one of the muscle stimulant devices. I bet he’ll be at 70%.

  73. uglydingo says: Jan 16, 2016 8:24 AM

It got very little attention but Ndamukong Suh and Olivier Vernon got to him in the final game when the Dolphins smashed the Patriots. He has had 2 weeks to recover but the hobbling was for real – it was obvious that he was trying to hide it. Belichick is the best at diverting attention from injuries but Brady needed the extra week to recover from the high ankle sprain.
This may be a bigger deal than people realize.

  74. 3rdngoal says: Jan 16, 2016 8:27 AM

Brady has high ankle sprain and Maclin has ” mild” ankle sprain. Though Brady has time to rest, he’s much older. Since the article is about probable hiding of injuries, which of these two is more hurt? One is behaving like it’s nothing, the other one seems to be hurt enough to possibly not play. Often it just is what it is. Nothing sinister about it.

    New to football I see,

As for whether those 49ers teams cheated, Montana restated, “If you ain’t cheatin’, you ain’t tryin’,” before adding, “You know, everybody does everything they can to possibly get a little bit of an edge. I mean, back then it wasn’t illegal but it was illegal, like our guys used to spray — and everybody did it at the time — silicone on their jerseys, the linemen, so that the defensive linemen couldn’t get a hold of them. And the defensive linemen did it so the offensive linemen couldn’t hold them. It’s a game. Everybody wants to win, so you do whatever you can to make it happen.”

So there you have it, straight from the mouth of the GOAT (for everyone who can’t claim Brady as their own).

Not that anyone needed confirmation about a certain Western PA team cheating.

  82. ikeclanton says: Jan 16, 2016 12:23 PM

    1. If he wins, he’s a battered and tough hero who rose above it all.

    2. If he loses, built in excuses are all around as to why.

    Kind of lame, really.

Brady does no such thing and has played with tons of injuries throughout his career. Mentally tougher. Ben wears the mental “skirt” in this regard.

Oh sorry Patriots, what you are witnessing is the decline of your franchise quarterback who was quire amazing over the last 15 years.

Better enjoy the fond memories because it will be 5-6 years of rebuilding. No QB = no success!!!

Start stockpiling your recordings of the Brady’s career because it is ending.

Sorry to say, but Jimmy G. is Steve Young to Brady’s Montana, Aaron Rodgers to TB’s Favre.
